  1. Correct, but not entirely. The key concept behind moneyball is the purchasing of wins, or more spefically the purchasing of runs. Enough runs to win enough games to obtain a playoff berth. The trick is not paying to much for those wins. Working backwards this means: If I have $100,000 and I need 100 wins to make the playoffs that means I can spend no more than $1000 per win. Hence the drafting technique introduced in Moneyball is all about this concept. Spend money on players that deliver runs/wins but don't pay more than a specific $ value for each of those runs/wins. In football terms this could be loosely related to the purchasing of goals or maybe winning quarters. I.e. maximise your spending on players that provide you the best opportunity to win quarters of football. Broken down I would think this would mean: - players that are on the park week in week out - players that win their position more often than not - players that impact the scoreboard Obviously it's a complex concept and probably can't be described perfectly in a single forum post but I do believe that as a concept it has some merit in football and doesn't necessarily need to mean onlu obtaining cheap players from state leagues and bottom ends of opposing team lists.
  2. 28, was on rookie list, Tigers obviously not prepared to elevate to main list = retire or run the gauntlet of another draft. Probably made the right call. Only slim chances of being drafted and if he was there would be a good chance he'd need to shift interstate. Probably not interested in doing that at this stage in life. Well done Brad. You played some very good games at the Dees and always made sure to do the hard work on the track and in the gym to get his body as right as possible. I sat next Brad's dad in the AFL members during a Melbourne Richmond game many years ago. Brad was in the best, I think Neita kicked a big bag. It was truly a pleasure. A great guy, very proud of his son and rightfully so.
  3. Moloney is a free agent, unlikely we could work a trade for him. Only way he isn't at Melbourne next year is if we don't want him. No way a club will come out and make him a financial offer that's so much better than his current that will make him jump at it. He simply doesn't have the runs on the board. If we don't want him the FD will tell him so or make him a low ball offer that one of the poorer clubs will be comfortable beating. If he goes into the draft he will end up like Leon Davis. Likely to earn more playing in a state league with a few marquee player bonuses because clubs looking at him will be offering base wage + match payments.
  4. Green should go on. Has played pretty good footy in the second half of the year. Bagged 3 against the Roos last week and hasn't failed to commit his body to the contest once. We have ushered too many great servants out of the door 1 year to early far to often recently. We won't make the same mistake again. No one on the list deserves his place in the team as yet anyway. Petterd's barely had a kick at any level all year, Bate is shot, Taggert is not ready and Tapscott still has a long way to go. Plenty of other blokes to delist before pensioning Greeny.
  5. Put Jamar and Clark in that side and we'd have won by 15 goals. We did what we had to do to get over the line with a less than ordinary side. And let's face it Ablett is better than every player on our list by the length of the Flemington straight and Bennell would easily be out best midfielder if he crossed clubs tomorrow.
  6. bloody classic rpfc. there couldn't possibly be a paper trail purporting to such events, not only would someone need to be incredibly stupid to ever write such a thing but surely some 3 years down the track non-financial emails and documents have long been discarded. the only thing that could bring us undone is if brock or another player states they were advised by a coach or official to not try and win and it can be coroborated by another party. anything less than that is heresay and non-evidential
  7. I like this Old
  8. Dayne Beams is the one to go after for mine. Cloke won't leave Collingwood, they know their premiership window will essentially close if he walks as such they'll give him what he wants to stay. That will likely lead to squeezing out 1 or 2 of Beams, Wellingham, Goldsack & OBrien. Of that lot Beams is the most enticing. Even more so than Boak for mine.
  9. Josh Caddy Games: 14 Avg disp: 16.7 Avg Tackles: 2.8 Goals: 8 Seems some of what is being posted here sounds like overs. Ricky Bobby and a second rounder or not at all for mine. Hell they can have Jamie Bennell too if they throw in a strawberry Big M
  10. Agree demonoid, it didn't paint a positive picture at all
  11. B) Not a good analogy, heck if their's money in it!
  12. No doubt. This will be a quick and easy fix...Our friends at Arden Street are definitely most vulnerable at the moment but we're not far behind. Merge with Nth Melbourne, Change the name to Norther Giants. Play 7 home games at Skoda, 4 in Melbourne + a few more away games in Melbourne. Even if 30% of Roos members hang on the membership jumps from 10K to 20k.
  13. As it turns out a straight swap for Beamer wasn't a bad result in the long term. Unfortunately as TT points out Thompson was about ready to flourish right as the team entered a possible premiership window 04-06 so his departure was a bit of a disaster. Moloney has proven a reasonable swap albeit never quite reaching the same heights as Thompson. What is impossible to determine however is would Thompson have become the player he has had he remained at Melbourne or would his development have been stifled as it appears some others have? Slightly off topic but have you considered how successful the Crows have been in identifying, developing and holding on to their talent? 4 300 games players in only 21 seasons of history is remarkable. Melbourne has 1
  14. Robbie, Did your old man wait until the end of the game to come and get you?
  15. Above all else this thread displays what the MFC really needs and that is passionate people driving them forward. Hang tough, encourage and support. We've made it through harder times than these.
  16. Hear, hear! Great topic. - Whoever mentioned Trapper Johnstones game against the Crows in that Final in 2002, Bravo. Magnificent game but I was absolutely shattered when we lost that. I still have nightmares about Brian Beinke. 4 kicks, 2 goals, 2 daggers in my heart. Brian Beinke, Ken Mcgregor and Mark Stevens kicked 8 goals between them that night. Seriously! Could only happen to us.
  17. heres some more from my head... 1990 - 1995 - Lyon's 10 goals in a semi final against the Dogs - Shwarz 8 goals against the Swans at the SGG - Jako's monster bag against the Roos - Cuthbertson bagging 7, 7 & 6 goals in his first 3 games - Losing to the bombers at Windy Hill when Stephen Clarke failed with a shot at goal after the siren with what seemed like 50 horses and 10,000 people on the ground - Shaun Smith's mark against the Bears 1995 - 1999 - Jeff White crossing from the Dockers - Qualifying final win against the crows at the G - Stephen Tingay's ongoing battle with injury - Ditto, G Lyon, D Shwarz, G Lovett, S Charles many others... 2000 - 2005 - Robbo's bag and first Dees win at Kardinia park in a gazillion attempts - Neitas Coleman Medal in 2002 - Neitas hit on Luke McCabe 2002 - Whelan the Wrekers hit on J Hird in an elim final
  18. GWS would seem a logical time to unleash Cook too but only if it's expected he has the fitness and mind to remain in the side. No point bringing him in for a game or 2 and then sending him back to Casey. Do this in the last 2 or 3 rounds if we want to get a look at blokes. Too early at this stage. Regarding Green, I'll maintain footy is a game of inches and goal kicking from <45 meters is mostly mental. Don't drop him for this just yet. Would Petterd or Bate even had 3 shots at goal agains the Pies on Monday let alone convert them? Comparing him to Yze is not fair, Greenie will still dive on the hard ball.
  19. Agree wholeheartedly mus0003. He's made more than a few journos and ex players eat their words. They were all so content to bemoan the Demons for paying superstar $ for a good ordinary player. NONSENSE. This bloke is the real deal. Built like Tarzan and plays like freakin' Tarzan. Although 10 games is a short period of time to judge it would appear this guy has taken his game to another level at the Dees despite the jibes of the media, being at a new club, making sizeable money and having a comfy long term deal. Must be applauded. The Dockers will be spewing they missed out!
  20. Similar to Garlo spending time forward Neeld is trying to add some strings to Howe's bow. Running him through the midfield now means he can trott up and get a kick when the ball isn't reaching the forward 50 or conversely can be swung from the midfield to the forward line when we need a bit of a spark. No point in wasting a bloke with a huge tank and desire to gut run in a forward pocket. Those roles can be left to blokes like Sylvia who only work hard on occassion.
  21. This is relevant in the Buddy sling tackle too. Essentially what the AFL have said by not sanctioning him is you are allowed to sling tackle so long as you are lucky enough that your opponents head does not make contact with the ground and/or they suffer any type of injury.
  22. Agree. I wonder if Col had writhed on the ground for a few moments and then appeared physically distressed for several minutes on the bench had they taken a different stance. The fact that he got stright up and remonstrated physically with Brown probably did the big filth defender a big favour. No doubt in my mind that if Fasolo hadn't been winded by Tappy and simply suffered a contusion he'd be playing next week against the GWS
