  1. There are a few there that are just maybe good. Blease, Strauss, Jetta, Maric, Aussie are no certainty to be midfielders, even rotating mids. Trengove and Scully certainly sound like good prospects, but that is all they are at this stage, good prospects. Then take out some of the older players who will start to fade away over the next 3 years and there aren't many left. Pick 11 I think should be used on a tall, but after that just take the best player, big or small.
  2. and the first pick in each round, so I think they get 1 and 17 & 18? Sorry, that's not right: 1,2,3,5,7,9,11,13,15,26,43 something like that
  3. Depends how you define it, I think our ruck division is seriously wanting at the moment. Not that Blake is really all that great, worth taking at the right price.
  4. Blake, maybe.
  5. Lacks maturity and I think that affects the way he runs, found him out of positon a lot this year. With some confidence and astute coaching he could be a very damaging player.
  6. And this one is a picture of quality and insight. If you have a problem with the sample, do some research of your own and come up with an alternative. Or do you just base your estimations of the relative quality of pick 11 on your gut feeling? Perhaps a list of all pick 10s, 11s, and 12s since 95 would be more appropriate,.... ooooops wait there I go again, trying to put up evidence to support an argument.
  7. How many of the 22 pick 11s do you rate as better than Mclean? and Is that enough for you to be comfortable?
  8. Agreed, everything is about taking chances, but as a listy manager you must be constantly evaluating a player's relative value and risk to the club against the upcoming draft's potential and risk. I just don't think we got enough value. As for our recruiting dpeartment's track record, we are way too early to make that call. Jurrah was a great move but I am yet to see anything else to make me think one way or the other about their performace last year.
  9. Yes, I guess 11 and Yarran would be a bit much. An interesting question might be: Which would you prefer, Yarran or pick 11?
  10. Increasing the sample size to include all players pick 11 and later instead of just pick 11 will 1: increase the total number of players better than Mclean (good players) and 2: increase by far more the total number of players who are worse (bad players). Overall the percentage of good players would decrease. I guess you could try and draft only good players? We would need to make room for another player on the list and that is getting tough to do at the moment. Good deal though, 11 and Yarran for brock, even if 11 is only half a chance.
  11. Dissapointing first year. Can kick the ball though.
  12. What's the point? The point is that we all rate Mclean differently, some would have him worse than 5 of those players some maybe more, by providing evidence I allow you to make your own judgement on the percieved value of Pick 11 and remove my own bias. Why don't I go through this year's draft pool? Because no-one knows how good they are, not anyone here and not even the players themselves. Is Brock Mclean better than Panos? Is he better than Jetta or Butcher? Will those players even be available at 11? The way I see it is, you can ignore the post if you think Mclean is worse than half those players. Or you think that by picking a player because they are of the type we need we will outperform the market in terms of value to the club. You named 5/22? that's a long way from half, you must really rate our recruiters.
  13. Aplogies for re-posting this. Pick 11 for the last 22 years: 2008 Steele Sidebottom 2007 Patrick Veszpremi 2006 Andrejs Everitt 2005 Shaun Higgins 2004 Adam Thomson 2003 Beau Waters 2002 Jason Winderlich 2001 Richard Cole 2000 Trent Sporn 1999 Darren Glass 1998 Lenny Hayes 1997 Jason Saddington 1996 Brent Grgic 1995 Donald Cockatoo-Collins 1994 Damien Ryan 1993 Brad Johnson 1992 Jonathon Robran 1991 Leigh Willison 1990 Danny Sexton 1989 Darren Smith 1988 Mark Bayliss 1987 Tim McNeil 1986 Jason Taylor Find 11 here that are better than Brock, and then we're at even odds to get value for the trade. In a weak draft We don't get the players picked after pick 11, we get the player we picked at 11. And we're one of the least resourced recruiting departments around, I have nothing against BP but chances are he won't find one.
  14. What about stability? For the list and the supporter group. Surely at some point we will be benefitted by a period of fewer changes, so I can put a player's name on my back and leave it there for a decade. I guess you're right though, we're committed now and broad changes and massive restructuring is our point of difference. The dice is rolled, now we have to run with it.
  15. You had me until here.
  16. I'm struggling to be enthused by the whole Mclean leaving thing as many seem to be, asume for a second that what we get for pick 11 is a player of Mclean's ability (a big if) , this whole thing is still a disaster whichever way you paint it. Either Melbourne didn't want him, so cut his pay and forced him to look elsewhere. Which is a terrible way of treating your better, more passionate players. OR Brock, got fed up with the coach, the club or the players and wanted to leave. In which case his sentiments would be shared by others and we're staring down the barrel of DB being fired because he's "lost the players", and other players wanting to move on either now or next year.
  17. I have no doubt we will need a marquee player soon, just to make the salary cap. But it isn't this year. Who would want to play for us this year, the way we treat our better players I doubt we'll be able to attract a decent player for 2 years. When we start to drag ourselves off the bottom of the ladder and we become a promising side marquee players will start to filter in, and we'll have room in the salary cap to attract them as well, that is when we should jump.
  18. We won't be using our 4th or 5th round picks, and if that is where his value is then we shouldn't be picking him up.
  19. leave it on, but put some VISY & $$$ on it
  20. Trying to think about the positive, Butcher could slip to 11? Would you take him there? I wish this happened last year.
  21. I am astonished people here don't think Brock can make our midfield, we don't have a midfield he was one of our best over the last three years. Not that it matters, he's gone now, traded in his heart for VISY $$$. What annoys me (except for Brock himself) is that it happened now, and 11 is all we got, why? We have PSD1 so hold the trump card if he wanted to walk. How does this help our situation? IMHO we didn't play hard ball enough, carlton got the far better deal. We better get lucky with pick 11, just maybe we can snag a lenny hayes or a brad Johnson and not any of the other 15 shizen players to be picked up at 11 in stronger drafts over the last 20 years. This is Woewoeden for Bell all over again except this time we traded at age 23!!!
  22. Brock will easily make carlton's starting midfield, and they actually have a midfield. I cannot understand how demonlanders come to this conclusion with the list we have. but the point is moot anyway
  23. Whoever signed off on this deal in club is a fool, never have a felt so diflated and upset as a Melbourne supporter you have let this happen far too easily, I have defended DB and BP up to now but this is just a disgrace. As for Judas, I hope you break both your legs and never play again.
  24. Ooops, that's changed, apologies. We're a long way from tasting champagne like that, sentiment is all we got, and the kind of sentiment that seeking a trade of Mclean for pick 11 is the not so tasty kind.
  25. The thing that stuck in my mind was how all the players were talking up Wonna and Grimes all preseason. Grimes turned out to be right on the money, which doesn't garuantee Wonna would do the same but it is interesting. I will be paying careful attention to the same reports over this off season.
