Plying like Robbo? He has a bit of a defensive game too does Col, and can lay one of the most devastating tackles going round... I liked him in defence against the Blues, but this is the clear choice for Col. Good boy CS, good boy DB.

See you at the game... Here's hoping Maric puts on a show...

Jack Watts - Confirmed #1 Pick in 2008 Draft - Booyah!!!
Dappa Dan replied to Tex's topic in Melbourne Demons
I don't think I could have put it much better than your large post above. I had Naita as my pick only because we're damned if we do and damned if we don't... At the time I just didn't want to have to run what I'm sure will be 10-20 year debate about whether or not passing on Naitanui was a mistake. My second pick after Nic was Hurley, but only because at the time he was the best KP prospect at the time... I reckon Before2Long has it about right when he says it's #1: Watts as a player who's screaming to be picked and has HUGE upside, #2: Rich as the safe option and #3: Naitanui as pick 3... Though I will say one thing that angered B2L when I mentioned it to him. I haven't seen a lot of Watts, and I'm sure he has all the talent you'd need... But there's a guy that's just come in who has an impressive amount of talent too. Juice's skill set is, any MFC fan would agree, impressive. He pretty much doesn't have any weaknesses in ability. Maybe he doesn't have Watts' low centre of gravity, vision, awareness not to mention work ethic and assuredness, but he is a precocious talent nonetheless. My point is not that they are similar in "pedigree" as you put it H, but that if ever there was an example of an unfulfilled KP forward talent, then Juice is as good a cautionary tale as you could imagine. Just cos the kid has ability doesn't mean he's a guaranteed bet. That said, you can't pass on a player because he MIGHT be a dud, you have to pick them for what they COULD be. For mine: - We are in more desperate need of a KP forward. So taking the best player might just be taking our most needed type as well. - Franklin, with his specific physical capabilities and how they effect games may dictate how recruiters go about their jobs. Watts seems to have some of these genetic gifts that seperate the greats fro the just goods. - Think of our spine in 3 years, Frawley, Garland, (Warnock) Jones (Moloney) Bate, Watts (Miller, Newton)... And the best part there is the backup players are all serious units that have acquired a fair bit of faith from their supporters. - Consider the Hawks' One-Two-Punch of Franklin and Roughead. Watts and Newton could be a damaging pair, and that's not even including Miller and Bate who will be in the 22 every week going on this year. - With that in mind, suddenly the ruckmen we have on our list look a lot more solid. Spencer, PJ, Jamar, Warnock (if he comes)... - Here's one for the newer posters on the site... Hannabal, at least in the last 2-3 years has NEVER gotten excited about a player. This is the first and only time I've seen him feel the need to post positively about anyone 5 times in one thread. In all seriousness though. I'm on Watts now. It's the best fit. -
Yeah. You recruit a guy his height you expect him to become a KP player of some description... I'm hoping he goes the way Ling did... Ling was recruited as a forward, became a tagger, then became a tagger who got lots of touches and is now just a great midfielder. If Dunn just becomes one of the leagues bet taggers then I reckon that's almost a bit of a loss, having such a talented player play negatively. Like being the smartest kid in special school.

I still can't believe this Western Sydney thing... The only way I can see it working is if they're a premiership threat for their first 20 years. They're going to have to offer them twice the picks the Gold Coast got to make that happen.
-
Aaah. Yes of course. Thanks vanlo... And yes, I was pretty keen on him too. I thought a 4-year plan wouldn't be the worst thing, as whoever comes in will be tested more in the latter two. The all-important formative years of all our teenagers have to be handled to the nth degree...

Mate. Every day's a demons day for me. I have 3 scarfs and a gurnsey in my car, as well as the stickers. Melbourne is a cold place and I always wear my scarf when it's cold. Private school? Any chance we could get him in the new 150 club? Seems like demons supporters DO have a type, even when they're from another state. And they don't even have any snow in SA... do they? Well done though KrazyJay. The story sums up so many things, not the least of which the kind of selflessness required from us if our club is to be great again. That said, could you imagine if some guy slipped your son a crows scarf, or shock-horror, a pies scarf? He may as well try to make out with your wife... I can't think which is the worse line to cross....

I reckon Colin has the envied title of being the player who has made more demonlanders and 'ologists look like fools than any demon player in the history of the sites. From now on whenever people go to abuse a much maligned player, they may just pull a punch or two, and it's all thanks to Colin. In fact, now whenever I consider young players who don't even look close, I can't help but think of Garland. Isaac Weetra anyone?
-
I may be wrong there. In his interview on the news he said he turned them down as they only offered him 1 year (?????). When asked if he'll take over when they enter the AFL he said "never say never."
-
I'm not. There's always need for another tall forward, as only Miller is our real out-of-the square big-type KP player, and even he doesn't play there for whole games. Juice kicked 4 last week and 2.7 the week before. Perhaps they really do just need to see where he is over the space of 8 rounds. They need to know who is making way for all the draftees next year.
-
Wow. That's huge... He'll be ripe just in time to take over at the Gold Coast.
-
No offence intended, but I stopped reading after this line... Both Brock and Jones are gun players, and neither were able to snaffle up the captaincy by 21. Grimes would have to be one of the greats to do this. He's played a couple of senior games, not even in the AFL, and people are hugely pumped about him. I'm sure he'll be a really good player, but jeez, way to put on the pressure...
-
Is that the actual side as selected? Bruce is in it, so I'm going to assume it's not your preferred side.

Nice work gentlemen... Jace Bode, John Meesen: "Who are You", The Who Col Sylvia: "Waiting for my Real life to Begin" By Colin Hay (Men at Work) Jared Rivers: "It's all coming back to me now" By Celine Dion Matthew Whelan: I can't even look at him anymore without picturing the youtube video of him crunching Hird to "Chop Suey" by System of a Down. Isaac Weetra: "Mistake" By Stef whasserface that's dating Riewoldt.

Could Carroll take Benny's place in the list? As the "break-glass-in-case-of-emergency" player? I know he's no forward capable of kicking 4 goals...

VIC Metro vs WA on Fox Sports - Wednesday July 9th
Dappa Dan replied to Yze_Magic's topic in Melbourne Demons
It seems like this might be a good year to come anywhere between 14th and 16th. Watts for the fact we need about 3 KP forwards. Bate plays a different game, Dunn is tagging in the midfield at the moment and Newton is frustrating. Rich because we have a solid, but not-so-classy midfield... McLean and Jones are starters, and we have good second stringers like Bartram, Moloney and Valenti... With Jmac leaving perhaps one, maybe two really good mids are what's called for. Also Moloney is always injured, and the jury's still out on Valenti. Nitanui... well I guess it comes down to Warnock. We have PJ as a player that may become the league's best backup ruckman who does jobs around the ground, and we have a few young ruck talents coming through. If we can have a good ruck division, who are a presence on the ground, then we can afford to go one of the other guys ahead of NicNat. I thin everyone (except Y_M, of course) agrees there is a LOT of risk with NicNat. Yes his physical attributes are astounding, and he makes you think of Franklin... but Buddy was always a great footballer as well. Nicknat is not, and will never be. Also he's a Perth boy. May want to go home one day... -
I don't get this thread. Are you saying the most important in 2012? If so, then fair enough... Though I'd put in PJ and a few others. But if you're saying the most important now, then Green is in there, and Bruce is too for everyone except you. Also, this thread only highlights how we only have then ten guys we have faith in. We need more than 22 to REALLY get excited. Of your revised list, I'd be surprised if more than 5 were still there come 2010 when we start winning again. And that's a good thing.
-
:D I can't believe the Saints have only one. That sucks for them. Though I guess Riewoldt and Kosi Count for quite a lot...
-
Is Frawley still eligible? Buckley? Garland is going to be one of those players I reckon, the ones that NEVER get the recognition they deserve.

Mate. My Dog knows more about football than you. And for the record you massive, massive twit... I said Palmer would win it too!!! Palmer isn't built like a bean pole. Morton is. If you knew anything about football you'd know that Cale's brothers both took time to develop and have put on size, at which point they've started to play much better footy. Wrong, sunshine. Gotten to know those coaches well over the years have you? It would depend on what each side is looking for. The ones threatening for a flag now? Yes, they'd take him. The ones looking for rangy mid-height players with killer right boots? They'd take Morton. It's that simple. Heeeeey, look at that. The genius has caught on. Compare the two players AFTER they've played a few more seasons. Well done numbnuts... Now go and learn how to read, preferably not from your collingwood preschooler mates, and look at what people have written. Palmer will win it unless he has a season ending injury, and even then he would probably win it anyway. The next time you want to come in here and question my knowledge in football, or my intelligence in general, you may want to look at your own first... This is demonland. Not Collingwoodland. If you want to trade posts with smart people, at least go and get an education. Now off you run, little boy.
-
Pros = Austin doesn't get the delivery. Plays as a leading forward. Has kicked way more goals. His side has kicked the least of everyone. Cons = Not having to find the ball amongst Franklin, Roughead and Williams. Please add... but as far as I can see, he's ahead. Not of Palmer though.
-
Wow. MFC taking strides, and coming up with the most inventive tank yet seen!!!! In all seriousness, this is not a damaging story. Davey's reputation is tarnished a bit, but it shows he did the right thing (after the wrong thing), and the leadership group did too. Sends a message.
-
Hmmm. Hadn't seen it like that at all... I was making a different point, but I see what you mean. I wouldn't want to be seen as someone that put CJ in the same boat as Trav though. There aren't too many similarities... and TJ is certainly more talented.
-
There's no way Rioli is ahead of Wonna. That's cos no-one cares. If the cliches are true Palmer will play his best footy before he's 25 (man's body), and Morton will play his best post 25 (teenage netball-player's body)... Trying to judge the selection of Palmer over Morton NOW is ridiculous. Palmer's season has gotten Fremantle exactly as close to a flag as Morton has anyway. Wait 5 years and we'll have a clearer idea... Though I note that no-one has DISAGREED with you. You could be right, you could be wrong... the only thing that's for sure is you are NEITHER right now. As for the rising star, Palmer would have to cop a big injury NOT to win it, a la Marc Murphy. And Wonna would need to kick 40-50+ goals... which means averaging about 4 for the last 8 weeks. Rioli has kicked 14 from 14, Wonna 21 from 12... Wonna ahead by a MILE. My money is on Palmer, but I reckon Wonna would be comfortably second right now.

WHO WOULD BE A GREAT TRADE FOR US THIS YEAR???
Dappa Dan replied to MELBOURNE MANIAC's topic in Melbourne Demons
???? Mistakes? We got a pick 14 for Woey who did nothing with his last few years. Bell hasn't been a star but he would attract something on the trade table, and we got good service from him last year... Jolly left of his own accord. And as for TJ, he'll be doing nothing in a few years, and Grimes wil be JUST starting to come good! What if Grimes is a 250-game veteran? Carroll won't get anything at the trade table, likewise Juice. MOTY is not going to up his price. Unless he comes in in a week or two and gets people talking.
