More ruck trades? What the F is going on with the AFL these days?

If the Tarrant trade hasn't scared clubs off deals for first round picks then I don't know what will... We don't have players that get great press, and other clubs do... How they convinced Freo he was worth that much is something that still boggles my mind, especially given Freo's WOEFUL track record in trading, you'd think they'd be careful with it! If you're EVER going to take someone's trash and make it your treasure, you don't do it with first round picks... unless you're desperate to have a tilt at a flag, and you're sure that the player is leaving, not getting traded against his will (a la Judd).

This is one of those ones where I just can't seem to see why everyone gets so excited. Picks 1, 17 and 19 are off the table unless we get an upgrade for them... And Carlton would want one of those picks in a straight swap. Only a big, multi-club deal would make it work. For mine.... I'm all for us being aggressive, but I have this awful feeling the demons will overdo it at the trade table and come out second best in a deal or two.

You're still a tool... but ultimately, I agree with this. I'm underwhelmed by those names... There's been a bunch of others mentioned (by Nudge mainly)... Prismall, Thorp et al... They're all a complete fantasy, but fun to imagine.

The only thing about that, is that MOST of the trades that end up going through in those last 15 minutes (or first 15 minutes) of draft week fit into one of those categories!!!

If I was in my late twenties and at MFC I'd want to leave too... If we ARE going to trade him, it would make more sense to do it now, as his value wont get much higher. Strong draft, our best player this year, hardness, skill, leadership, a good head on his shoulders... Could walk into a leadership group at Carlton or something. The only concern is our kids need SOMEONE to follow the example of. No Green, then who?

I'm surprised to see you place so much emphasis on test results. I think there's a fair amount of evidence to suggest that drafting kids can sometimes become a "fad" type of industry. Franklin is the most exciting footballer to be seen in recent memory, and many coaches have said it's his physical characteristics that set him apart from the rest, and make him such a headache for players and opposition coaches. Thus the fantasists (who shall remain nameless... we all know who we're thinking of) get on the Naitanui bandwagon, and suggest that since he broke a record or two in vertical leaps he'll be the same story as Buddy... Well if THAT'S true, then the same must be true of Watts. He's shown just as much athletic freakishness, only you can also throw in a turning circle, skill, a brain... There's just too much evidence to ignore him. It's Watts as #1.

They all sound good... but as with 99% of the rumours, I doubt seriously any will get past the "mooted" stage. Bell and whatever for 28 is a sensational return given the sitation and the depth of the draft. Seaby for 35 is a bargain for WC. I know he's 24, and he's semi-proven... But he's going to be list clogger before too long at the dees, and he'll excite about as much as Jamar anyway. Wasn't Dowler hurt badly? Take Thorp in a SECOND, maybe even for Rivers. Reilly and Clarke for the right price... and Mitch Morton for a second rounder... They all sound exciting, as always Nudge.

I think the thing hat makes Naita interesting is not how he'll be in the ruck contests (which by all accounts, he'll win most of by default) but how his athleticism, work ethic and leap will serve him around the ground. He's taking pack marks over guys in the centre square. If he can do that closer to goal, as well as crumb the way he does, then it's more as a tall mid that we'll see him work his magic. I know it's an ancient post, but this is what's been on my mind... Much has been made about the fact we've got 1, 17 and 19 instead of 1, 2 and 19. But given the even-ness of the first 20 picks, we could end up with a gun at pick 19 if we're lucky. If we could pick up the next Kerr there, then missing out on pick two won't seem like it hurt us so much. We picked a good year to lose the priority I reckon.

Yeah... WTF!!! That's like us letting go of Bate or something. Hislop is a gun, I nearly had a heart attack... I'd take him in the draft, let alone the rookie or PSD...

For those who saw a fair chunk of his year live, what did his sprinting look like? The athletic stats really don't mean ANYWHERE NEAR as much as his footy brain, his ability to lead strongly, keep balance etc etc And from what I've seen, it's his turning circle, hands, and engine that set him apart... not how fast he runs. As good as it is to hear he has genuine pace, it's another thing altogether to see if he can find the space to use it on the pitch.

There's so many other options I'd rather take than him... Is anyone else underwhelmed by his abilities? We've already got the best backup ruckman going around, and I'm not sure about Seaby as a starting ruckman... If we got him cheap as chips, and offloaded Jamar maybe that would work.

When are you gonna grow up and realise no-one cares what you think MFC needs? You think what you want Y_M, just don't come on here and blow your horn... it's making 'land suck for everyone else. There was a thread on Bigfooty not so long ago that gets dug up ever so often... The vote came in as the Tiges having the best song, followed by the dees. I reckon that's probably fair enough... I hate the Tiges more than any other club, but their song is a corker.

That's pretty much what I just said. My point is if that's the only thing you can think of that'd bring them down, then that's a sign things are going pretty well for them... This is why we come to places like 'land and 'ology... As for your list of players... I don't reckon we can know much at all about our upcoming core group of youngsters when half of them haven't even been recruited yet ('08 and '09 draftees). So there's every reason to be positive about us.
