Farewell Jesse Hogan
You wonder about motivations, if all of this is true. Playing finals? Stay at Melbourne Play with your team mates? Stay at Melbourne Repay the faith, development and care offered during the last few horrible years? Stay at Melbourne. Go home (and spend half your time travelling interstate ) go to Freo Play under a coach that has never used key forwards well? Go to Freo Big Bucks? Probably either. i would be interested to know how well he gets on with his MFC team mates. in the end, my primary concern is that MFC uses any player movement to enhance its position. If it’s on, then let’s get a good deal and create a nucleus of players that want to be here, and want to win together.

Winning the Trade & Free Agency Period?
I think it would be a substantial improvement in the list compared to this season. With the outs (before rumour) of King,Vince, Flippa, Pedo, Bugg, Balic improvement is highly likely. If you add Kent and VDB, then it gets harder. If Hogan is on the move, then it becomes more challenging still. The ‘core’ of the team that played finals and did well is there. If we dont cover our weaknesses (Second ruck, outside run) and bolster key stocks (Midfield, goal sneak) it wont be a ‘win’ for mine. We were an injury to Max away from trouble, struggled to cover Lever and really had no answer to an underperforming Garlett. Cover these, improve the quality and let the media decide that others ‘won’ the off season. If we get better for immediate onfield effect (not drafting kids) then we have won as far as I am concerned.

Crickey, are we there yet? silence from all the sources that would matter. Will the Bluey cause player or club to reveal their hand?

Farewell Jesse Hogan
Agree. The price would have to be right for MFC to entertain it. If it happens, I want MFC to play super hard ball.

Farewell Dean Kent
He was clear it was for job security. Like we got Lewis by offering 3 when Hawks offered 1. Suspect about the same

Farewell Dean Kent
What?? SO how will they trade for Dean? A future pick? A player swap? There is quite a breeze of change on the list - Although apart from Dean and the retirements, all are VFL standard.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - STEVEN MAY
Didn’t he speak to us, not the other way around? I like how the club doesnt leak. They plan and act. They leave all of us (and the media) to guess. It would not surprise me if we are not into May at all. I could see Collingwood needing to replace Dunn, especially if Moore is lured to Swans. Hold on tight - I think it is going to be very interesting.

Farewell Jesse Hogan
I think his field kicking is some of the best going around. He has a few staggers at set shots, but watching him deliver on the move to another player is different. I really rate this part of his game. In a way, he could be a bigger version of Petracca for us. Shifting him to HB could be an interesting idea, or using his power, marking and aerobic capacity on the wing (a great marking target as well) could be another option. Personally I see him as the roaming CHF type who would be damned hard to match up on, with Weids and TMac deep.

Harrison Petty
They probably thought it was worth the risk to promote him early: The St Kilda Game should have not been the farce that it ended up being, Petty should have had a ‘taste’ of the AFL and gone back with that in mind to help his progression. Instead, the midfield leaked so he had more pressure than he should have had, and fluffed it badly. The missed kick from half back will unfortunately be remembered for a long time. But in the end, the team choked on that game, and Petty got shown up. Lots see if he can develop at Casey and have another crack in 2019

Peak - End Effect
There is an idea from Daniel Kahneman (Behavioural Economics) that we evaluate an experience on the ‘peak-end effect’. That is, we are hopeless at assessing the full season rationally, and instead take our feeling from the season by the peak experience (good or bad) and the end experience. We all know what was the ‘end’ experience. It was disappointing, and a definite lowlight to leave us all feeling a bit worse about the journey the club took us on this year. However, what was your ‘peak’ experience for the year? What was the intense emotional moment (good or bad) that shapes the way you saw our year. Here are 3 of mine: The smashing of the crows in Alice. Man, what a performance. The Geelong final win. Probably my peak emotional experience and an absolute beauty. And #3 was the win over WCE that got us there. (My peak negative was the Geelong game with the loss after the siren). What was yours?

Must address in pre-season
Wings of Baker and Stretch, plus one additional fast outside mid with kicking skills at least one, if not two, xfactor small forwards at least 1, if not 2, relief rucks (Bradtke as one of these?) 2 understudy midfielders for injury cover petty to develop, lever back in. on the block: king, flipper, McKenna, Bugg, Pedo, at high risk (trade or exit): Tim Smith, JKH, Tyson, Johnson (can he be nev understudy?), Kielty (will need to debut next year) serious conversations : Lewis and Jones.

Pre-match brunch
There is a real line at the footy. I love it when opposition fans are loud and proud, and get stuck in to what is happening on the field. I am doing the same. However, when they start having a go at the supporters (especially kids) I tend to see red. Personal attacks to make yourself feel good should only be reserved for the umpires. Having a go at supporters is what creates crowd problems. Gotta know the line. unfortunately, too many idiots can’t help themselves and take active supporting as ‘personal attacks’. Some of the uneducated, entitled nuffies can make a great day at the footy really unpleasant.

Pies Gone Past Us ??
Gone past us? They beat us R23 last year, QB this year, and won one extra game to put them into the GF. they are playing well, credit to them. We are young and building. Better to remark that we have significantly closed the gap between us and the best teams. We would have been a fairy tale this year, but hopefully we are building a dynasty around what is the premier emerging midfield in the comp.

Say what you want, I’m proud of this club this year.
I am very proud to be a demon member. Many years I would not be able to say that. Pass mark was making finals, but at a deeper level it was the way we played. I’m really happy that something special is being built in terms of culture and attitudes. we outperformed all expectations, and did so with a hard at it, derring do attitude that made us the highest scoring team in the competition. i believe we have a nucleus of a great team. Some outside speed and polish, and some maturity, and who knows? Several players have the chance to become elite. after I get over the WCE horror show, I rate the season an A, effort 1. (A+ would have been the gf)

Jordan Lewis is absolutely cooked, never pick him again
When we win the middle, JL can get position and set up behind the ball. When we lose the middle, it comes in fast and he gets caught out. Makes him look super or a dud. my biggest disappointment was the indiscretions and poor leadership demonstrated. His choices under pressure were also not great, but he was not alone on that front. Salem May be his natural replacement as half back distributor.

I am happy and proud...and disappointed too. This was an opportunity lost. Things will be different next year, and I hope we can continue developing as we need to go up another level to stay in front of the competition. But, I am happy with where we got to based upon my initial expectations for 2018

Post Match Discussion - Preliminary Final
The comment ‘boys against men’ was apt. We had a couple of players that cost us big time - Lewis and Tyson. They were not just bad, they were almost playing for the opposition. There were very few positives in the first half. We competed more in the second, but were still way off the pace. A few players can hold their heads up, a few can think they tried. The season is done. We outperformed expectation, and hopefully this is the start of something, not a flash in the pan. We need to make some critical team changes, including more outside silk and polish. Without this, our crash and bash game style can be unpicked. These ‘boys’ need to learn composure, and to stick to our game plan. The tackle count and contested possession count were damning today. Enjoy the flight home, fellas, and good luck to Casey.
