  1. We've leaked Frawley and Howe, so about of leverage would be appropriate.
  2. Since this is a Melbourne website you should be saying Scott Thompson.
  3. The only clash is that between the AFL and common sense. Let the AFL administrators spend their lives in AFL approved garb if they wish. Let Gil wear AFL approved canary jocks round his head for the week. The so called jumper clash is a complete furphy. Richmond should just wear their club jumper and donate the canary top to Gil. The AFL need Richmond, Richmond don't need the AFL. Another piece of b******t is the AFL approved record crowd for yesterday. Prelim crowds have topped the 94k mark in past years and we don't have to wipe another piece of Victorian football history just to sign-off on more AFL propaganda.
  4. It's all about branding. The AFL want AFL jumpers, not football jumpers.
  5. Barassi's SECOND last game. He played for Dee's against South Adelaide two weeks later. Dee's, champions of Australia!
  6. This is the puzzle which hamstrings our club. The past does matter. IMO we have never got over our winning spree (1938 to mid '65) and certainly have never got over our losing mentality (post '65). How to explain the easy shots which could have put us into the '87 grand final. An ardent dee down this way maintained - on inside knowledge - that Melbourne 'were not worried' about carlton in '87 and would have put them to the sword. We choked then, as we have EVERY time we have started to climb the ladder since norm smith and barassi's departure. i have lived through every one of these false dawns. can remember us climbing up the table in '67, '71, '76 and then our golden years of 1987-1991, when we hit a wall in most of those years ruining our home and away ladder finish and hence our shot at another flag. Smith may have been an excellent coach but - like the queen, the royal familly rebecca judd and tarax lemonade he was not the messiah or the panacea, and certainly - i digress here - had a lot of personal business attached with the barassi disaster. i mean if smith wanted the mfc to defend him against an umpire's libel suit why did he feel free to then slander the melbourne committee on live television? in defence of this year, we have continued to improve our ladder finish four years running, and have the lowest maximum points loss for a season in at least fifty years. ( i couldn't be bothered going back further, but footscray beat us by 40 points in our premiership year, and this year i think our max. points loss was 46 to adelaide, someone can correct me. we are a couple of elite players short of being able to win games we should be winning. we can't rely on our current best 18 to perform to their max through a whole season. we need to maximise the 'melbourne' in our club name by not playing in the backblocks and not playing late Sunday games and then playing the occcasional friday game (instead of watching sydney etc all the time). How we get to that position may rely on the improvement available in players like petracca, clayton, viney, gawn and others. i have invested my two children in the red and blue i hope they aren't memorising players numbers into the distant future like i did.
  7. It's a national competition that's why melbourne play in Alice springs and melbourne storm play in melbourne. That's why Rabbitohs get smashed and Sydney swans never play in darwin. Been reliving this same old garbage since norm smith handballed barassi to Carl.
  8. First visit to Victoria Park and we stood on beer cans. Colin Graham played a great game but we relied on another game' results which didn't go our way. Ten years of darkness followed.
  9. Found this great link to a 60's Dees win over Collingwood featuring some glorious high marking by Greg Parke. As WJ has noted in a past write-up this game brought much hope for the Dees but we could not sustain the effort in future rounds. To think it was 49 years ago. .
  10. Every time I see Pedo I think Tassie Johnson and Don Williams. Must be the haircut.
  11. when was the last time we were this deep in the season and never lost by more than six seven goals?
  12. if you are drawing the bow you are pulling it a (long) way back. Perhaps if Glenn Archer is posting here he could clarify...
  13. large bow or long bow? Query from Robin Hood.
  14. Not to mention how players who are constantly sledged on here - Dean Kent is a current example. I'm sure Clarrie could straighten out a few of these snipers.
  15. should be categorise as sneaky, medium impact. definitely doesn't deserve a Leigh Mathews statue outside the G as no post broken and the act was not behind the play.
  16. Ha Ha. The last time this happened at the G, it was the Freo game in the last minute of game and a melbourne cheer squad member (allegedly) called the goal umpire a silly old duffa. what do you know, security in all their pomp were down in a flash like the cavalry pin-pointing the alleged name caller. players are entitled to protection from abusive commentary as well as officialdom, even if they are wearing the red and blue.
  17. For older punters, I think that's what Ray Biffen did.
  18. like a rebound in basketball with Jack Watts slam-dunking.
  19. Not to mention Viney's broken jaw by a Geelong player cuppla years ago playing for Casey. Geelong player got off.
  20. Have lived through many false dawns: 1. Norm Smith's mass recruitment, 1966. No big names to emerge, we got smashed nearly every week. 2. Fight our way to 7th (out of 12) 3. Tiger Ridley gets us on fire in 1971, and i lap up Sunday Observer write-ups how we are back in town. Get demolished by CWood on Q Birthday with Len Thompson marking everything. 4. 1976 see us flying to finals under Bobby Skilton only to narrowly miss. 5. Return of Ron. 1980 yields promise but no pudding. 6. The John Northey phenomenonon. Absolutely amazing, but always faltered, maybe didn't have enough belief. 7. Balmey in 1994. Fabulous year with Schwarta but undone in the west. Cruelled by injuries. 8. Neil Daniher - from 1998. A lot of respect but maybe just didn't have the cattle in 98 and 2000. 9. Roos/ Goodwin. Would say there is heaps of belief now and we are becoming consistent. Never seen such a game as Saturday night, shows we mean business this year. Can realistically hope for success, hope it's sooner rather than later.
  21. Our first four point win (against Collingwood) on the G. since that day?
  22. "The o.p" internet translation = over-inflated pap.
  23. I see the same people +++ing Whelan's hit on Hird.
  24. An absolute ripping video which will keep Melbourne in the public eye through the years to come. I always felt that part of our demise in the 60's was because there was no video record of our greatness, whilst teams like richmond collwd carlton essendon and hawthorn got endlessly played and replayed on television through the decades. as a result we lost many potential supporters andd those teams gained supporter armies whose kids went onto follow the same teams.
