When did the Roman empire collapse? Hard to say, because hordes of barbarians had been knocking on the door for centuries. When did the mighty demon empire collapse? In this game. Melbourne lost their aura of invincibility that Saturday, and never got it back:

From the Archives, 1965: Melbourne’s armour pierced by Saints

Tonight we can be the barbarians, and go 6-0. Go Dees.

Can someone identify the (Melbourne) players here? I see Darrel Baldock with the pill being chased by Don Williams and possibly Ross Smith in the background and Big bad Carl on the left.

I'm so sick of this narrative.

The idea that a professional sporting team, which is by design playing at its maximum potential if the coaching staff and players perform their roles, can 'lift' for an occasion and suddenly become 10/20/50% better than they otherwise would have been is just pure nonsense.

It implies that collectively they have been leaving something in the tank in other 'non occasion' games. Or that they are lacking motivation to perform in the absence of a milestone.

Inevitably, the team that performs better on the day/night in terms of executing their roles, strategy and football skills will win the game. It's as simple as that.

The media love these stories as they are sentimental and easy to understand, but it's just not a concept that holds any water.

In this example I'm not sure how the passing of a club great would cause 22 unrelated men to collectively raise their output. In all likelihood, the Lions were just the better team on the day.

As we were in Spud's game.

Any mathematician will tell you the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

  3. It's funny how we mark our lives with these things. FWIW The Saints trajectory never really took off like it should have, and was marked also with its own tragedy. Getting overrun by The Dons in the '65 GF, getting run down by the Hawks in '71 and failing to win any premierships in all the years following Barry Breen's miraculous point.

    GO DEES.

Although we were 8-0 the signs of our decline were evident before the St Kilda game. We won 4 games by under a goal and the only big win was against second last side Fitzroy. St Kilda exposed us and we never recovered. We only won a further 2 games again against Fitzroy and bottom side Hawthorn.

i think we smashed carlton the week before our fall. ironic, since it was the big match-off ronald dale v norm smith.

Looks like the Bulldogs have landed themselves another training facility in their heartland.   a-huge-opportunity-western-bulldogs-find-second-home

Because it is in their heartland they are able to harness local support and put a big emphasis on community benefit.  Placing ourselves in the MCG precint denies us the same persuasiveness with local greenies, coucils, other sports etc.

Hopefully Kate can work thru that for us.

Why is every Tory supporter of this admittedly posh club denigrating 'greenies'? Haven't you ever heard of the green green grass of home.

I hate to mention this but my first time at the football was going to that round 9 match with my brother, a St Kilda supporter. He was 11 and I was 8. I decided I would follow the Dees because they were the reigning premiers.

My first visit to the footy was the beginning of the subsequent disaster for the club.

I am the jinx. I am the curse. I am responsible for everything bad that has happened to the club since.

I see it clearly now !!!!

    Sorry !

Our family went overseas for all of 1965. Come back in 1966 and no Barass, no Tarax show and no Dees.

In 1965, as reigning premiers, we started 8-0 thanks to a series of close victories. It all came to an end on Queen's Birthday Monday when we were smashed by St Kilda by 63 points at the MCG. Nothing but misery since.

It was the day made famous by Allan Jeans masterstroke of selection when he swapped Verdun Howell from FB to FF and Bob Murray from CHF to full back.

Murray went on the become a highly regarded full back whereas Howell was already a champion having lost to Bob Skilton in the 1959 Brownlow on countback (it was subsequently awarded to him when the Brownlow rules changed).

Not to mention Ian Cooper taking big speccies on the backs of our players when Saints went wild in the 3rd quarter.

I think you'll find we were about 8-0 in 1971 under Tiddles Ridley. In a fact I'm going to look it up now.

Damn, we were beaten by Collingwood after sitting 5-0. Len Thompson slit us up. I always thought that was about 8th round. So we can win next weekend and go back into a time portal.

Same year that Richmond became co-tenants of the MCG. Time to take back our turf and assert the Demon era
