    Oh what memories.

    The famous names.

What a fwd line up luxury.

I remember the day Jakovich retired Mid Season with great sadness.
with him, Lyon and a Young Ox we were a Serious chance that year, but not to be…

The article is more about getting JvR and Petty (two relatively inexperienced key forwards) firing early and cohesively more so than our real issues.

A lot of our woes in 2023 were caused by the injury crisis, inaccuracy and decision making. Whether we like it or not the game plan is the game plan and I still believe if we have the cattle on the pitch we'd have had a much better end of the season.  Hopefully McQualter can address some concerns though re: delivery with some fresh ideas though.

These 3 will be the main threats in 2024.

    • JvR - 20 years old kicked 28.9, he will build on this.
    • Fritta kicked 35.25 missing a huge chunk of the season, two seasons prior he kicked 55.22 and 59.24 so he was a little off this year.
    • Petty kicked 12.1 in a injury ravaged season, if his foot is good, he will be good.

They should all kick a bag in 2024.

The Depth options weren't that wasteful, they'll chip in this year, as will McAdam

    • Melk Booted 20.11
    • Joel Smith 11.4 in limited game time
    • BBB 11.4 in limited game time

We had a decent return from the small forwards, but this is where it gets a bit more inefficient

    • Pickett was 37.30 which was a bit wasteful but he's still kicked 120 in the last 3 season
    • Chandler kicked 24.13
    • ANB 19.11

Whoever is forward coach, needs to get Petracca sorted as he has kicked 28.34 and 19.31 in his last 2 seasons. He can definitely win a game off his own boot but needs to be more clinical.

Tracc and Max were the main offenders.
I have Faith they can both improve with hard work over the off season

He is not at top value - as you just effing said - he has foot issues all year.

Adelaide are not going so hard to recruit a crook player. They want him at his cheapest.

If he wants to go - he can go end of next year after playing 22 games and kicking 50 goals.

A Mill a year is not a cheap player, if the Croms are desperate for him, what can we squeeze out of them.
    I am playing cards…

So you’re saying trade him now because he’s crippled and won’t play good footy again? You’re assuming Burgess and Adelaide are stupid and haven’t done their due diligence?
He’ll play early next year. Bet on it.

No. I am weighing up all considerations. A big one is his injury history.
Right now he is at Top value, but he is also valuable to us…

    Yes Burgess would know Harrison…

Petty will have a higher trade value in SA next year. Both SA clubs will be in a position to trade for him, PA will have the picks from Butters leaving at a minimum, the Crows, despite the hype will still have decent draft picks. No Doodee, No Petty, very few good backs, a decent but not outstanding midfield, Walker a year older, they’re finishing 7-12.
The revisionism here is incredible, Petty had an injury interrupted year THIS year, he’s 23, he’s not getting worse in future. He missed 5 games with a foot THIS YEAR in the middle of the season, came back and then missed the final 6 games again. His form was patchy, he played back, then forward, then back again and then finally forward where he struck form, for two and a half games. After a full preseason in one position, next to an older, stronger JVR, Petty will rip it up next year. He won’t miss “all of preseason” he’ll be back doing light running when we return and doing modified training after Xmas, fitness wise he’ll have a great chance to build a good base.

The “Petty’s value will never be higher” argument is coming from Adelaide, it’s the only reason MFC would CONSIDER moving him on. It’s malarkey.

Yep 2 serious foot injuries in one year

    That is a concern.

    Why not?

He's 23. If he proves next year that he can be a power forward, as well as a proven key position defender, then why would his value be any lower?

Are Adelaide or Port magically finding another 24 year old key forward/defender elsewhere who wants to relocate to SA?

Port will be just as keen and will have better picks than they have this year. Could have a bidding war, plus give us 12 months to find a replacement.

They are offering $ Mill a year.
That is huge for a player, with injury history and 2-3 serious games up forward

I love Petty, he is a Premiership Player, but the contract the Croms are offering is ridiculous, and it is worth considering, if we can milk Adelaide for return picks

But there are no serious Forwards available this year. That is where Cornes theory falls to the ground

  7. I agree with Corn on this one, except there is no Key Forward around to replace Petty with

But he is right on one thing. Petty will never have this draft worth again.
But we need him in 2024, even if he leaves next year

So you are suggesting that our round one forwardline will be:

JVR (backup ruck duties also), Fritsch, McAdam, Smith, Kozzie, Chandler, ANB.
That’s dynamic for sure, but our field kicking will need to improve markedly because only one maybe two of those players has a remote chance of taking a big contested mark.

You are suggesting we have Petty and Melksham both on crutches in the goal square?

He’s not big enough to play Petty’s role. If Petty’s still out come the season it’ll be a bigger player replacing him. If McAdam replaces Petty we’re going very small and putting huge pressure on Max and especially when JVR rucks. I doubt that very much.
If he’s replacing Melksham then Smith goes back to sub? I don’t think you can have all of Fritsch, McAdam and Smith in the same forwardline.

If Petty and Melksham are both in the Grandstand, McAdam will have a job to do.
That will be to kick 2-3 goals a game

Future second round is fine. We tend to trade away our second and third round picks to move up at the moment anyway. And we have two second and two third round picks next year already.

I’m a little confused as to why we want him though. Who’s spot is he taking?
Right now our forwardline next year is:

Petty, JVR, Fritsch, Smith, Chandler, Kozzie, ANB

    with

Fullarton, Schache, TMac, Brown as tall forward back up and Melksham, Laurie, Spargo, Sestan, Jefferson and possibly even Woey pushing for forwardline spots.

Can you play McAdam, Fritsch, Smith with Petty and JVR? That seems very top heavy. Are we dropping Smith for McAdam? It sure as hell won’t be Fritsch. From what I’ve seen McAdam doesn’t play small? I don’t get it.
I would’ve thought an experienced back up ruck, a power tall forward, a developing key back and some quality skilled mids/wings would be better for our list. But our second future second round pick is nothing, particularly given our holistic approach to pick trades.
So go for it I guess?

Right now we have Petty and Melksham out on long term injuries

McAdam fills a very important need for 2024
