Their failure to win a flag in the 2004-2010 period was the death knell for them. Imagine where North would have been now if they didn't capitalise in the 90s. Well that's the Saints, only a decade behind them and in a worse situation.

Yes i think you are right Chook. There was a short period of time where Butters and Thomas were the innovators, but it all fell in a screaming heap.Ā
North were also very lucky in the 70’s when the 10 year rule came in.Ā
If they hadn’t had that opportunity I don’t think they would be here todayĀ

How do Saints fans turn up every year?

    33-0 in the first quarter

    Praccy match but still

Your right, it is truly amazingĀ

I listen to the latest St Kilda President and it’s just not going to happen,

I grew up in St Kilda territory, Moorabbin could be a fearsome place at times, I would go there with school mates and wear a Saints scarf for protection!!!

But they have always been 1 foot away from the Cliff

It really is amazing that they pull any crowd or Membership.Ā
We have had very lean times as well, i am not forgetting that, but we go into Season 2025 chasing number 14…

    Meanwhile at St Kilda…..

    no it's not

a club emblem / logo is about standard and consistent branding to be instantly recognisable and associated with the product as it is

simple and direct works, and not changing it willynilly all the time too

the 'demon spirit' stuff has enough frills around it to supposedly be appealing but personally i think the notion of our emblem having any effect whatsoever on our appeal to younger generations is a complete misnomer

Well that just means we disagreeĀ

we need to engage the younger generationsĀ

An Emblem can do that, as long as the product on the field is winningĀ

they will be wearing the black shorts with the white south melb jumper for all clash games this year, before colour tv they wore black shorts then changed to red

We all wore black or white shorts before Colour TV

I thought the Swannettes looked great last nightĀ

Outdated and the second is Not even Ā our real colours. Navy blue more than some royal style is our colours.

And haven’t we won the 2021 flag with this newer emblem.Ā

Let's worry about what happens on the field and matters like this can be addressed when we are 17 flags atop the premiership race.Ā

Changing emblems like flags always indicates a lack Ā of self confidence IMO as the real issue is changing our style out on the ground and winning.

That makes a greater Football Club with continuity and confidence not tinkering at the edges.Ā

    Ā

This has got nothing to do with onfield matters.Ā
A Club Emblem/Logo is all about getting young kids on boardĀ

We have a large void to fill in that respect, which all started back in the mid 60’s when Television started to show Saturday Replays in Prime Time. Sadly this coincided with our fall down the ladder, which meant The MFC were very rarely on and when we were on, it was usually a heavy loss. The result being Kids followed other teams

It wasn’t cool to be a Melbourne Supporter…

The problem still exists, we have to grow our Membership and the lifeblood of that is Young KidsĀ

So an Emblem that they want to identify with and wear, is very important.Ā
    Ā

I don’t mind our current logo, it’s ok, but i do think it is a little bland

I think a Demon with a Trident is needed with Flames too….!!

So, no inhouse match sims then?Ā  Way to shoot your own argument in the foot.

Not at all, in a practice game you have no idea what the tactics of the opposition are.Ā
Round 1 you know the opponent will be going at 100%

  9. 28 minutes ago, Demonstone said:

SWYL, you've clearly made your mind up about this issue and have laboured the point on this site.

However, injuries can occur at any time, be that at training (McVee), during intraclub match sims (McAdam), practice matches/sims (AMW) or obviously during an actual game.

In such a physical sport, it's a risk that can't be avoided.Ā  Keeping things inhouse won't mitigate that risk.

Games where Players are not going at 100% against an opponent are dangerous. That’s when a lot of injuries happen.Ā
i am well aware nothing is bulletproof, but these televised games are a liabilityĀ

Yeah it’s a [censored] deal but it’s technically three first round picks as Brad enunciated and you can trade two years in advance.

But you would be an [censored] to accept it

We would never enter a deal over 3 years…

Yes these practice games are dangerous. Everything should be inhouse until Round OneĀ

  12. 1 hour ago, Bring-Back-Powell said:

True, and last year's first round extended to pick 25 after academy picks.

Imagine having 3 pick 25's spread over 3 years while watching Kozzie star at Freo next year, and throwing a second rounder back their way.

    Ā

Why would anyone accept that deal? That is not the situation Brad was referring to at all…

Very strong leadership from Green which is so much more than Pickett.Ā  Typical media who create a title that leads to click bait.

    Ā

For those that can't read the Age article, here are some extracts:

ā€œPeople ask ā€˜has it been challenging?’ I said, ā€˜no, what was challenging was when I lost my wife six years ago’. And after that period, we had the funeral, and I reckon it was four or five days post that that I really struggled to get out of bed and get on with my life.

ā€œBut then I thought ā€˜Well, I’ve got an eight-year-old, I’ve got a six-year-old’. And you sit down and go, ā€˜in the end you’ve got to get out of bed for them’.

    Green on Simon Goodwin

Green said Goodwin had been ā€œweighed downā€ by media attention until the club reached a legal settlement in November last year.

ā€œHe’s a premiership coach. He is Melbourne’s only living [premiership] coach and probably from our members and supporters to the wider football world, we need to give respect and kudos to this guy,ā€ Green said.

ā€œWe had to do something as a board to help lighten that load because we see a coach just getting buried and buried…

    On Christian Petracca

Amid reports that Petracca was unhappy with aspects of the club culture, Green wanted to hear from the player himself.

ā€œI caught up with him when it all was all hitting the fan and said ā€˜mate, what’s going on here?’ And not once through that was he talking about anything other than Melbourne Football Club and where we can improve,ā€ Green said.

    On Culture

ā€œI think what we found is issues get put into the one big basket, and they become [conflated] into a big pile of [censored], really, and that creates different instances of what they say is culture. But what I believe, and what I know, is this is a very driven, strong, talented group that can can achieve anything they want to.

Are the Demons a destination club?

Green says Jake Lever and Stephen May are proof that Melbourne remains a place players want to come to.

ā€œI would think we are always a potential destination club,ā€

    Pickett’s future

    Discussed in a post above

    Oliver’s tears

He revealed the conversation that kept Oliver in red and blue.

ā€œI rang Clarry around the time of the B[est] and F[airest night] and said, ā€˜This is the situation; you’re not going anywhere. Tonight I’m going up to give a speech and say to our members that our starting midfield for 2025 is going to be Petracca, Viney, Oliver and Gawn. OK?’ And he started getting all teary on me.

ā€œHe said to me, ā€˜Please, don’t do that because the B and F night, it’s not about me, it’s about the guys that are going to get awarded for their individual seasons’. I said ā€˜No, Clarry, it’s not about you, but our members and supporters want to know we are committed in this place and this environment. And I’m just ringing you to say, ā€˜I love you. We love you and we’re going to move forward with that’.’ And he got off the phone and just said, ā€˜Love you, Greeny ’.ā€

    Friendship, love and strength

At a pre-season Kumbaya session in Bright, the players came up with a mantra for the year:

ā€œThere’s nothing wrong with tough, hard conversations between each other.ā€

    A new game plan

ā€œHe [Goodwin] wasn’t happy with any phase of the game: the way we defend, the way we move the ball, the way we attacked and the contest. People think we’re a contest team, but I think we went from first to eighth or ninth last year,ā€ Green said.

Proposed changes to the illicit drugs policy

ā€œLet’s look at it, let’s review it. But is being hard and fast the answer? I think the model that we have does catch and help players. Is it a deterrent? People are always going to challenge those things. Can we be harder on it? Maybe. But can we help and save players? Yes, in this model. I reckon if you go too far the other way, I reckon you’ll get less vulnerability in emotion and people being able to help.ā€

    Caulfield development

Green is adamant a new home uniting administration and football at Caulfield racecourse will happen, despite the Demons needing to raise a further $70 million in funding.

ā€œWe’ve never had our administration, our football department, in one area. Never, and it’s a disaster. We need all those parties to be in one room because until you do that, you’re not one club.

    Handing over the reins

ā€œI’ve got a young family of a 14-year-old, 12-year-old and a 14-month-old. And I run my own business on top of it, so it’s fair workload,ā€ Green said.

ā€œI want stability and succession planning for Steve to take over and, potentially, once my boys finish school after three or four years, I take the presidency back over from him.ā€

    Ā

For me, the parallels with out 2020/2021 preseason are uncanny when:

    • players met on the peninsular and AdV higlighted the lack of professionalism in how players spoke and dealt with each other.Ā  Many then committed to each other and resolved to be 'the best teammate I can be'.
    • Goodwin was stressed and under the pump by former admins and others until Roffey and Pert stood by him.
    • Serious review of game plan.

And we know what happened in 2021.Ā  šŸ†Ā

It is a real shame we lost our way in the intervening three years but I'm rapt we have the ship back on and even keel.Ā

Now it is time to 'walk the talk' and I am very optimistic of our year.Ā  We let 2023 slip.Ā  Don't think that will happen this year!

Excellent article. Greeny comes across as a bit of a softy, but he isn’tĀ

He has done a heap of work inside the Club since SeptemberĀ

Don't love that statement. Not Green's job to weigh in on trades just as it wasn't Pert's job to float Oliver for trade last year. Stay in your lane.

No of course not, BUT incorrect information is confusing useless and exactly what I have pointed out from D/Lers on occasions.

And the ones Ā that stated pointing the bone at the website are in effect criticising paid employees that work completely differently to the opinions of some amateurs.

Two ridiculous cheap shots this week were no Henderson recognition of Dees selecting for about 24 hours.Ā
Secondly was the delay in information on the Casey match after the AFL Match and simulation on the website.Ā

MFC generally is not the major news source for the Casey matches however today when the match times were changed due to the expected extreme heat this was followed up with mention of the Casey match afterwards.

Pointedly was information of the train and tram details from a station allied with the tram no. As the best to get to Arden St plus match details the lack of shade etc.

Demonland got confused the station and no tram and although I lived in Melbourne for over 40 years from 1948 the station/s and tram would not have altered in my nearly 77 years. Ā Arden St has not moved either in 70 odd years.

My only criticism of the website is that the headline for the North AFL match could have been about the time commencement change from 11AM to 10AM.

That Ā is the role of the website ( like bringing interviews and articles about players and correct and reliable advice on match times transport )

DLand is a discussion and opinion forum with variety of posts but not necessarily the detailed official information.

So my point is get your info where you want to but don’t be upset if it’s the wrong source or is incorrect.Ā

However cheap shots on the speed of the website are ill founded and petty. The timing is allied to the process through the AFL not the discussion or potential of an event like on Demonland. The media also prioritise this approach and have for ever and a day

Failure to understand these roles causes most of the reasons for confusion when it is a simple situation.Ā

WTF are you rambling on about??
