Your effort at stereotyping one group of people without thinking too hard about it is poor. In the first place, there have been plenty of footballers of Greek origin, starting with the Pannamopoulos (Pannam) family which included Collingwood greats like Lou and Ron Richards. There's also a connection between Greeks and a large number of people of Macedonian heritage (some say there's no difference but I won't get into that debate) so we can include the Daicos family. Peter Daicos was included in the Greek Team of the Century compiled by AFL historian Col Hutchinson and I didn't see any temperament issues with young Nick this year but I'm now aware that you wouldn't draft someone like him. I don't have the data regarding the numbers of Italian and Greek footballers but I wonder about your argument about cultural differences too. I once was involved in a discussion with a Greek friend who put it down to the strength of soccer in our Greek communities and my observations anecdotally of the strength of the predominantly Greek club South Melbourne Hellas in junior ranks certainly bears this out. They've produced plenty of good Australian soccer players as well. All in all, I have to agree that ruling out potential recruits by reason of a perception about their temperament based on race or nationality is not just stupid, but also offensive and not welcome on this board.

Jackson is also a "unicorn" in the sport - a near 200cm giant who can ruck and also play mid type role which makes him a valuable commodity and in my view, his trade value is greater than Taranto's because he's a few years younger.

The main AFL Draft Combine involves three days of testing from October 7-9. The State Combines take place thereafter, usually in the following week.

Some interesting observations and differences of opinion here. I mentioned on another thread that the Rookie Me Central AFL Draft Power Rankings – October 2022 dropped today. This is what it says about Tsatas - “ELIJAH TSATAS OAKLEIGH CHARGERS | MIDFIELDER Height: 186cm Weight: 79kg D.O.B: 18-10-2004 FLEET OF FOOT Plenty of top-end prospects are labelled ‘jets’, and Tsatas is one who embodies that moniker on-field. The Oakleigh Chargers speedster is an athletic type at 186cm, able to seriously hurt the opposition with line-breaking dashes through the corridor. Given his outside tendencies, Tsatas mostly featured on the wing at NAB League level, but really catches the eye when utilised at the centre bounces with his ability to break away cleanly and hit targets at full tilt. Coming into the year, he was one of three Victorian midfielders in the mix for pick one, and has pressed his claims with terrific numbers in the back-end of the year.”

I spoke with Harry last week and asked him what he thought about being drafted by Melbourne in light of the fact that we might potentially get an early draft pick in the Freo trade. He was a bit wary because he felt it was a tough team to break into but I think he was being modest. He’s a Hawks fan and would be thrilled to end up there.

Hear me out on this one. If there was any justice in the world Melbourne would somehow end up with selection three in this year’s draft after trading Luke Jackson who we picked with #3 in 2019. I first came across the name of this Wesley College (Glen Waverley campus) student when the Victorian Under 15 schoolboys squad was announced in mid 2019. Others in the squad were Will Ashcroft and George Wardlaw, who I knew about from my grandson’s local competition but there were also players like Jhye Clark, Blake Drury, Harry Flynn (unfortunately injured for most of 2022) Cooper Harvey, Matthew Jefferson, Noah Long, Paul Pascu and Jonti Schuback who have all made a mark at NAB League and/or National Championships level and will be discussed at length until the draft at the end of next month. It didn’t matter who I spoke with, the name “Elijah Tsatas” was foremost in the minds of the good judges at this level of football. I knew how good a footballer Wardlaw was already and had heard about Ashcroft but for Tsatas to be ranked ahead of them, meant that he had to be something very special. We didn’t see much of him this year because injury hampered his season but … we saw him last week for Vic Metro and he’s just won the best and fairest at the Oakleigh Chargers off the back of playing only five games so I would say that all of the promise he showed in that pre Covid19 period, is still very much in place. He’s categorized as a midfielder but he’s not an inside bull like his Oakleigh teammate Wardlaw, might not accumulate as much Ashcroft and isn’t your key position prospect like Cadman but my vote goes with Tsatas. We Demon fans have been spoiled over the years by the sight of skillful players running up and down the wings at the MCG - Dixon, McLean, Adams, Alves, Flower, Tingay and Langdon - and (yes, it’s a big statement) I have a feeling that this kid would not look out of place among that lot! And the jumper number 2 is sitting in the cupboard waiting for someone fit to wear it over the next decade or so. Okay - that’s my early October pipedream.

Here’s Cal Twomey. Things will start to get interesting with the Luke Jackson trade happening over the next week or so and though many favour using an early pick for a young key forward like Cadman, I agree with Ivan that Elijah Tsatas who has been a standout in junior ranks for a few years already, is the one (given that Ashcroft is unattainable). And to top off the State League dominance of the red and the blue, West Perth (though they are not the WA Demons duly saluted yesterday!

And the Pies take the lead with a minute to go with a snap shot goal … and they win by 2 points. Reminiscent of how they won half their games during the Mens season.

Spoke separately with two people with completely different backgrounds and both were very positive about Noah Yze’s future prospects. One to definitely watch in 2024.
