WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - CHRISTIAN PETRACCA
Whispering_Jack replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Top AFL Draft prospect Christian Petracca proves his midfield credentials -
Shifter believes there are four prospects worthy of a #1 pick in the draft ~ Four players worth No. 1 pick in AFL Draft says Kevin Sheehan This probably won't deter us from seeking a trade of our top pick if the right player is presented but, on the other hand it would be tempting (if we knew we were going to get them right) to pick up two very elite youngsters if we managed to get # 3 for James Frawley.

The AFL Draft Combine opened up today with a relatively light day of activity, mainly introductions and interviews. The AFL website is suggesting that things will start to heat up tomorrow. From 11am, groups of players will start to complete the agility and 20-metre sprint tests on the Etihad Stadium floor. West Australian Jarrod Pickett, who has run a 2.8 second 20-metre sprint, looms as one of the favourites to take out this event but could face some opposition, particularly from Victorian Ed Langdon, who tests well for speed. Later on, the draft hopefuls will be put through the repeat sprints test, in between more interviews with clubs and recruiters. Midfielder Angus Brayshaw of the Sandringham Dragons who is considered one of the options for Melbourne at pick 2 will miss the physical testing because of an ankle injury. Here's a video summing up the first day of the Combine: http://m.afl.com.au/video?guid=693501

Bombers scandal: charged, <redacted> and <infracted>
Whispering_Jack replied to Jonesbag's topic in Melbourne Demons
The WADA statement said it accepted the "no significant fault" reduction on the part of the NRL players. It will be interesting to see how WADA looks upon the waiver forms and how that affects "no significant fault". -
Bombers scandal: charged, <redacted> and <infracted>
Whispering_Jack replied to Jonesbag's topic in Melbourne Demons
WADA will not be taking the ASADA/NRL deals to appeal through CAS. WADA Statement on NRL Sanctions I detect a touch of angst about the delays on the part of ASADA in acting after their investigation was completed. Will this have an affect on any likely deals offered to Essendon players? I don't think they will be as lenient with the AFL players. The NRL, Cronulla and the players co-operated in the main while Essendon certainly didn't co-operate and there was the matter of the lack of governance at Essendon which hampered the investigation as well as the Federal Court action by the Bombers and Hird which was responsible for four months' delay. The AFL investigation ended in late May (?) and show cause notices followed fairly soon after with the court proceedings issued within days. The Essendon situation was a longer lasting supplement programme involving thousands of injections while the Cronulla mess was short lived and nipped in the bud when detected by its doctor. All in all, I can't see the same leniency with the AFL which would amount to rewarding the club and players for delays while court proceedings were under way setting a poor precedent. Half a season (11 games) minimum for mine. -
Summary of today's Trade Radio talk:- Mitch Clark/James Frawley The Cats could be in line to pick up two of the biggest names in this year's NAB Trade and Free Agency period. Already, former Melbourne forward Mitch Clark has nominated the Cats as his preferred club. Meanwhile, Geelong footy manager Neil Balme has told NAB Trade Radio today that even if the club can secure Clark, they'll still be keen on bringing in free agent James Frawley who is yet to make a decision on his Greg Swan Brisbane CEO Greg Swann says he believes Melbourne shouldn't receive pick 3 as compensation for the potential departure of James Frawley. WJ's note: Is it possible that an AFL CEO doesn't understand how FA compensation works? Is he just speaking up because Band 1 compensation for Frawley weakens his club's own pick from 4 to 5? Surely not? Shaun Higgins Higgins has officially departed the Western Bulldogs, telling the club he will leave as a free agent. North Melbourne and "one other club" are in the hunt for his signature. Dayne Beams Collingwood list manager Derek Hine confirms the Lions will need more than pick 4 to secure Dayne Beams. Hine said the Pies were happy to let Beams depart, so long as they were properly compensated. Liam Jones Jones has officially requested a trade from the Western Bulldogs to Carlton. Jones played just 10 games this year, but the Blues are after the key forward to replace departing free agent Jarrad Waite. Daniel Merrett Merrett could be on his way out of the club, with the Lions confirming he was exploring his options to move elsewhere. Merrett is still contracted at the Lions. Jono O'Rourke Hawthorn and St Kilda have expressed interest in former number 2 GWS draft pick Jono O'Rourke. His manager Tom Petroro has confirmed to NAB Trade Radio that he has requested a trade back to Victoria. It will be another massive day tomorrow on http://www.afl.com.au/afl/news/trade

Schroeder and Stringer have been delisted so we can approach them and draft them as delisted free agents. -
Do we put an end to the thread or take that comment from Mahoney as meaning that while he's not in discussions today, it might be a different story tomorrow or the day after.

No surprise that if Melbourne gets pick 3 for Frawley, Brisbane's pick 4 becomes pick 5. He wouldn't give a rat's otherwise. The determination of the band that applies by way of compensation is not dependent on a player's worth but is based on a set formula.

People should take great care about what they write here. Unsubstantiated allegations are not acceptable. -
Summary of today's Trade Radio talk:- Dangerfield to the Dees? Melbourne says they're willing to trade picks 2 (and 3 for Frawley compo if they get it) for Patrick Dangerfield. Adelaide say they'd be staggered if Dangerfield wanted to leave. Jarrad Waite Waite has walked out on Carlton and looks set to join North Melbourne as a free agent. Waite told the Blues today he would be leaving them. Waite is an unrestricted free agent. Heritier Lumumba Lumumba has nominated Melbourne as his preferred club of choice and will seek a trade to the Demons Dayne Beams The Brisbane Lions say they will only depart with pick 4 in a trade for Dayne Beams, saying there's "no way in the world" they'll trade any of their young talent for him. Nick Malceski Gold Coast has been confirmed as one of the clubs in the running to sign unrestricted free agent Nick Malceski. His manager Ben Niall telling NAB Trade Radio clubs were offering him two-year deals (plus a third with a trigger) to lure him away from the Swans. Jono O'Rourke and Kristian Jaksch Carlton confirms its interest in GWS former pick 2 Jono O'Rourke and Kristian Jaksch. O'Rourke has told GWS that he wants to be traded back to Victoria and the Giants are after a first-round pick in exchange Patrick Ryder Ryder's manager Paul Connors has told NAB Trade Radio he expects the Power and Bombers to do a really good trade for him. He also conceded pick 16 probably won't be enough. Jarryd Lyons Adelaide footy boss David Noble confirms the Crows still haven't put a contract on the table for Jarryd Lyons, who is expected to want to return to Melbourne. Grand Final Sprint - Last chance for glory in 2014
Whispering_Jack replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
It was a fair effort from Hunt to finish just out of a place considering he had a back injury for the better part of the last half of the season. -
AFL trade radio starts tomorrow and we could learn more about some of these draft rumours judging by the list of invitees:- • Paul Connors (manager of Ryder, Beams, Dangerfield) • Ben Niall (manager of Lumumba) • Josh Mahoney (Melbourne) and • Dean Warren (Brisbane Lions)

Have they allowed them to have a runner in the Grand Final sprint? It would be outrageous if they did!!! -
Don't worry if you're supporting the Swans. The COLA doesn't kick in till after half time.

GOODBYE MITCH CLARK
Whispering_Jack replied to The Song Formerly Known As's topic in Melbourne Demons
http://www.blueseum.org/tiki-index.php?page=Greg+Wells Exactly as I remember it and that's not only from the news of the day but from personal conversations with Greg who wore the number 11. One of my saddest memories was watching him play in that grand final for Carlton (even though they beat Collingwood) 33 years ago. Given that he gave everything for the club when he was a Demon, it was painful knowing that he had to go elsewhere to win a premiership. Making it more painful was that the players we got in return were relative duds. Of course, the number 11 evokes pain in the heart of Demon fans even to this day. -
I watched bits and pieces of the game and was impressed with Lachie Weller (brother of Maverick) who is a definite top 20 prospect at the coming national draft. If Melbourne does another Tyson/Salem deal this year, then I can see him as a possible prospect along with Oakleigh Charger Jordan De Goey or Calder's Paul Ahern. The other player who stood out among the potential draftees was NT's Nakia Cockatoo who has been injured for most of the year. .In all probability Cockatoo is somehow related to the Cockatoo-Collins twins who were at Melbourne in the 90s. Cannon's midfielder Nick O'Kearney who has was a ball magnet for them in the TAC Cup finals starred for the AIS Academy as did Sydney's likely academy pick for next year Callum Mills. Now that the AFL has ruled out special assistance for struggling clubs I regard it as an obscenity that the Swans can have free access to a player of his quality and I believe the clubs should fight against it for the coming year. Sandringham Dragons key forward Harley Balic looked good and kicked a couple of goals for the AIS.

Some of the best deals are hatched and executed much earlier in the season and at good clubs are kept quiet until they are announced during trade week. Buddy Franklin is one example.

Demonstrating why many of the rumours you read about on the internet should be treated with a grain of salt.I had a small amount of experience with Barry Mitchell when involved in administration of my sons' junior football club and can say he is a headstrong individual and that trait has been passed on to young Tom. A rare attribute in these days of big money offers and limited measures of loyalty among players. Plain to see the family name isn't "Scully".
