http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/chal...565.html?page=2 People should take a look at this article from todays paper- lots of people on this board have unrealistically high expectations on CAC and continuisly question his ability bc he has had 2 first round misses in Luke Molan and Nick Smith. From the 'super draft', misses in the first round include Sampi (6), Molan (9), Cole (11), Watson (14), Brooks (15), Harvey (18)... Other first round misses include Bradley (6), Trotter (9), Dunn (10), Watts (14), Morrison (17), Spaaderman (18) As CAC says in the article, talls are a much bigger risk, because if they dont become part of the starting team spine, then they dont really have any other positions to fill, unlike midfielders who can reinvent themselves as wingman, run-with-players or defenders. I think CAC has a well above average strike rate, has picked up some ripper players with low picks (Bruce, Pettard, Bartram...), and some great players from low first rounders- Dunn, Jones, Bate... People should try to get over Luke Molan and Nick Smith. in both cases injuries contributed to their demise. not all KPP can turn out to be successes, and we've had to use first round picks trying to find one for years.

im not surprised we're interested in sampi. we are in desperate need on a small cruming forward to help out davey and release davey more to half forward, rather than at the fullforward's toes... this can be seen by our recruitment of Weetra AND Hayes in last years draft...oh how i wish we'd taken Alwyn davey a year earlier when he did a preseason with us... anyways, dont be surprised if we take Addam Maric with pick 21 if he's still available- he's a freakishly accurate and exciting small/median forward. Also dont be surprised if the name Marlin Motlop is called out at pick 53 if he's still there (unlikely). Sampi is not really such a risk...taking him at pick 69 or something is a nothing pick. the truth is, though the very occasional Bartram or Westoff comes off with such late picks, 9 times out of 10 an 18 yr old picked up so late in the draft will turn out delisted after 2 years (re: heath neville). if sampi got his mind right, then he would be a great asset for years to come. if he is fit and motivated, he is clearly in our starting 18 in the forward pocket. thats the truth.

McGinnity is highly rated and will go between 15-30 in the draft. Pretty good considering he is a tagger... Surely you can understand why a guy who wins the game off his boot is rated higher than the guy who job is to stop the guy who wins the game off his own boot.

yes true, anything and everything could happen...but its still fun to analyze, predict and argue before it happens... thats what's enjoyable about a football forum...

Just so people know, i am not an expert. however i did watch the 4 matches in the national championships. most of what im basing my thoughts on is the little knowledge from the chamionships, and also from reading other 'supposed' experts who have written up draft profiles and phantom drafts on other forums- yes even bigfooty...1 out of 10000 people on there know what theyre talking about. 1. Matthew Kreuzer (Carlton) will go number 1 for sure... seems like he'll become a player like Josh Fraser, which for me would be great coz that means he'll end up being an average player. 199cm of his agility dont come along very often, and carlton have no good ruckman so it a certainty. 2. Cale Morton (Richmond) wil go at number 2 ahead of Cotchin, and this is not such a surprise. he has the best skills in this years draft, and if he slips to 4 i would be stoked. perfect replacement for johnstone if we get him, but i cant see him slipping. 3. Trent Cotchin (West Coast) this guy looks classy and will be a great afl footballer. most impressive about him is he is just as good on his left as he is his right foot. he will play in the forward line first 1-2 years of his career. if he slips to our pick, we will 100% take him. 4. Chris Masten (Melbourne) This guy is gonna be a star midfielder no doubt. is inside and outside player and a midfield on Mclean, Sylvia, Jones and Masten will be VERY exciting. he has a touch of OP but we will regret it if we dont take him, bc if his OP can be managed, he will be awesome. other possibility at pick4 is Palmer (slightly less rated than Masten) and Ebert. with pick14 and 21 also, we will be going for the best midfielder. 5. Lachie Henderson (Western Bulldogs) The bulldogs simply dont have enough quality talls on their list. with only 1 top pick this year, they will be drafting for needs. Henderson is the best true KPP available and the dogs will take him. 6. Ben McEvoy (Essendon) This guy has recently sky-rocketed to a top5 draft prospect, and while some suggest he will slide, i cant see him going past the bombers. is the best true ruckman in the draft, and has shown he can play key forward as well...i wish we could nab him, but wont be around at pick14 7. Rhys Palmer (Fremantle) Freo will be stoked to get him at 7. if either of Masten and Palmer are available at that pick, freo will pounce of these WestAustralians. his national champs was awesome. 8. Brad Ebert (Brisbane) 187cm midfielder. is very classy. looks like he'll become a good allround player. captain of his state, but was heavily tagged in the championships. definite top 10 pick. 9. David Myers (St Kilda) This guy is very highly rated by everyone. he will be a great afl player, playing half back flank, wing and even key back. if he slips to 14 we will 100% take this kid. an up-n-comin defense of Rivers, Frawley and Myers would be 3 quality key backs. 10. Cyril Rioli (Adelaide) This kid is a steal at 10. if he is available at pick 14 we should take him in a flash. he is an absolute gun. huge pace, great skills. will play forward line to start with, then midfield. he is a good fit for the demons bc we need a small forward to help Davey, but doubt he'll be available. 11. Tom Collier (Sydney) Collier will probably be gone by our pick. he is a future CHB and has the pace to play midfield. whoever gets him will be very happy and he is exactly what sydney need. 12. Alex Rance (Hawthorn) is a very highly rated backman, but being a fullback, i can see him slipping abit. i hope he slips to 14 but unlikely. will be a scarlett-esk fullback. 13. Scott Selwood (West Coast) Some people dont rate him, but i reckon he'll be a gun. good endurance and speed. wont be as good as joel, but will be better than his other 2 brothers (and both of them are very good footballers). he will go quite high i think, and will not pass geelong at 17 14. David Gourdis (Melbourne) Is the next best key forward still available, and we should be bloody happy to get him. will eventually play CHF i think, and looks like he'll definitely become a great afl player. Newton, Bate and Gourdis will be quality key forwards in years to come. we will definitely go key position with this pick for 2 reasons. firstly because there are lots of very quality KPP that are around still at this pick, and secondly bc we took a midfield with pick 4. Collier, Myers, Henderson and Rance will be other key position players that we'll be hoping will slide. 15. Jake Grimes (Kangaroos) will compliment kangaroos midfield. will become a definite 100 game player, because despite not being the most polished of midfielders, he has gerat work ethic and great leadership. runs an awesome beep test as well. whoever gets him should be very happy. 16. Jarrad Grant (Port Adelaide) Some say he will go at pick5 to the bulldogs, others say he will slip to the 3rd round. i think hell definitely be a 1st rounder. will be a great key forward (though a bit short at 191cm) but needs alot of development. Port Adelaide need key forwards! 17. Steve Gaertner (Geelong) this kid is an athletic freak. much better athletic propect than even Tom Williams, who was similar before he was drafted as a top10 pick by the bulldogs. at 196cm, he is a tantalizing propect and will probably become a CHB, if he is taught how to play. Geelong clearly need Key defensive back ups (as seen by their problems when Egan was injured)- Scarlett, Milburn and Harley are all getting on. this guy will take a while, but geelong can afford a guy who'll take a couple of years and can afford to take the risk. i'd love this guy if he slipped to 21, because he could become nothing, but could be the biggest steal of the draft. 18. Patty Veszpremi (Richmond) i'm hoping he'll slip to 21, because this guy has x-factor, and will definitely become a good afl player. will add to any team immediately. great work ethic as well. 19. Scott Simpson (Western Bulldogs) This guy is a key forward, and is a pretty safe bet that he'll become a good afl player. bulldogs will be looking at his for pick 19 and will be a good get. 20. Addam Maric (West Coast) He's a small forward, who has rediculous accuracy. West Coast aren't desperate for a small/median sized forward, but is too good to pass up. could become a star, or maybe a nothing player (because he hasnt shown that he can play midfield)...guyz who know where the goals are, are very very useful. this guy is exciting 21. Tayte Pears (Melbourne) Maybe i'm being unrealistic than Pears will drop this far, but if he does, he is our man. will become a very very good KPP and together with Gourdis will add another quality young KPP to add to Newton, Bate, Frawley and Rivers. this guy wll be great, my fingers are definitely crossed. Other players who are definitely ligitimate top 21 picks who i couldnt fit in are: Thomas Bellchambers- we might wanna go for a ruckman at 21, and he is the next best available. With White nearing the end, Jamar clearly no answer, PJ showing he cant be a number1 ruck and Meesan completely unproven, we will need to take another ruckman in this draft. We might take one at pick 53 though instead of at 21. Levi Greenwood- blue collar midfielder, we be a good afl player. Tony Notte- i believe this guy could be the steal of the draft. 194cm but so skinny that clubs might be scared off to use their 1st round picks. if he fills out (and like Ferguson, that is a big 'if') he could become a star. Dan McKenna, Patrick McGinnity, Dangerfield, Robbie Tarrant, Arrowsmith, Dawson Simpson (207cm) are other definite possibilities for first round picks. ------- so...if we got Masten, Gourdis and Pears i'd be stoked. their are about 25 really exciting quality prospects in this draft, and after that it falls away. but luckily we have 3 picks in the first 21, so we are sure to get 3 quality youngsters. what are people's thoughts?
-
the best available at pick 4 in this years draft is a midfielder. thus we will 100% take a midfielder. we also desperately need to build a quality midfield division of the future. Masten, Mclean, Sylvia, Jones, Dunn, Bartram and moloney is quality! pick 4- will be out of Cotchin, Masten, Palmer- whoever CAC rates highest. obv Cotchin if he slips. if we go midfeilder pick 4, you can count of pick 14 being a tall...especially because in this draft there are a heap of quality talls that are around pick 8-18... it will be out of Rance, Myers, Collier or Pears (or Henderson or Mcevoy if they slip)---any one of these would be great! pick 21 will still be plenty of good players that slip...Scott Simpson could be a great get. Veszpremi, Maric, Selwood or Grimes would add another highly rated midfielder to our division. i wouldn't be surprised if we went for a ruckman (Dawson Simpon 207cm, Bellchambers...) also. my personal preference at pick 21 would be Geartner...appaz a better athletic prospect than Tom Williams, who was picked very early by the bulldogs. if we can turn him into a footballer, then he will be a massive steal.

people have been attacking CAC as a recruiter in recent times... for me he has been excellent recruiter- particularly in the last 4 years he has drafted- Mclean, Sylvia, Jones, Bate, Pettard, Frawley, Davey, Bell, Bartram, Newton, Dunn- all of these playing look to be very successful picks. but his main critisism have been the odd miss, particularly when it has cost a 1st rounder. his 2 main misses were Nick Smith at pick 15, and Molan at pick 9.... now i think its important people realize that 1st rounders sometimes dont turn out as expected. the draft can be a lottery sometimes, and this year has proved it... 1st rounders to be delisted recently: Ryley Dunn- pick 12 Keplar Bradley- pick 6 Trotter- pick 10ish Kane Tenace- still at geelong but looks like a big miss-pick7 Feel free to add any others u know... im sure there are many many many other first rounders who didn't make it. i think ppl should take this into perspective when attacking CAC for the odd stuff up, when overall he has a fantastic record of finding talent, especially with late picks- Bartram, Bruce, Robertson, Davey, Whelan!
-
luke Hodge was almost all australian this season and starred the entire year. u have no clue. and yes, hodge had mild OP when he was drafted....wait u would not go near him if you had the chance to draft him...right...
-
disagree....... Firstly, Bate flourished this year when he was moved to CHF. if you Jarka do not see the Bate played genuine CHF for most of this season, then you must not have gone to many matches. and what was the result of Bate playing CHF- 3rd in the b&f. please show me where Bailey said he wanted to move Bate to the midfield...Sylvia and Dunn will certainly be moved to the midfield, but Bate should develop his game as a forward. he has all the attributes to become a great, pavlichesk CHF. he has sticky mits, a thumping kick, a good goal sense, runs his but off all day and MOST importantly (and where Miller was let down), has a good footy brain. Frawley is no doubt being groomed as our next Fullback. he has the frame to bulk up, has a good mark and great closing speed. in today's game, a fullback also generates run from defence (see Scarlett!), so i see know reason why Frawley can't become a key back. Newton is only in his second season...true. but i have high hopes he will become a good key forward for many years to come. my spine for the future... Frawley- FB Rivers- CHB Mclean- Centre Bate- CHF Newton- FF i believe our problem is that all teams need 3-4 key forwards and 3-4 key defenders...we lack depth in our key position players, and with Neitz nearing the end, we will need to develop another key forward to aid Newton and Bate. We certainly need another key back to help our and develop with frawley and rivers. my spine for the future is young and developing, but there is real reason to believe it will become a strong spine in years to come. we will certainly add ATLEAST another key position player with pick 14 or 21 to add to those stocks. Rance to help our key defensive positions would be great, as would Collier or Myers. Henderson if he slips, Scott Simpson, Gourdis or Gaernter are others we will realistically draft to improve our KP stocks.
-
before people go all crazy.... i think we should keep in perspective that CAC has really not left as huge holes are people are suggesting. imo Bate will be a star CHF (not a midfielder) and Newton a great key forward. Frawley also looks like becoming a great key defender....so although we have made some misses drafting KPP, which club hasn't! if you want to see a list that is mismanaged, then take a look at the bulldogs...bulldogs supporters have real reason to question their recruiting team who has left them with a list with few tall players, and a multitude of slight runners. if we find another KPP in this draft- Rance, Gourdis, Geartner, Scott Simpson, Myers could all be available at 14- then we will be in fine shape. our drafting for the last 4 years has been terrific!
-
i think 'freak' should stop pretending like he actually knows Masten and his condition. there are different degrees of OP. if its extremely severe and there is a chance he'll never play to an elite ability again, then obviously dont pick him up. if its mild OP from being mismanaged as a junior, then he will 100% recover with careful management of his body and his training regime. it would be extremely silly to not pick up the best available player bc of a completely treatable condition of mild OP. When good management there is no reason why it will effect his afl career. people could look back on passing up masten in a similar way people look back on passing up Chris Judd bc of his supposedly dodgy shoulders. from Freak's perspective, you wouldnt pick up Judd bc there's a chance a treatable condition might curtail his career.
-
after reading that, and having seen him play many afl games (most average, but ive seen him play some good games), i wouldnt be upset if we picked him up. age and height are in his favour. still is young enough to improve significantly imo, and has the height that we need with Holland nearing the end.
-
i tend to agree with the original post. one area we have struggled in the past 3 years is handling the big bodied massive forwards. Holland has been servicable but is in his final season, and ferguson at 196cm has now been delisted. with our future backline involving River (lightly built 192cm), Carrol (decent build 189cm), Frawley (decent build 192cm), Garland (lightly built 192cm) we will continue to struggle against the forwards like Lucas, Hall, Richardson, Reiwold etc. Keplar, at 198cm and strongly build KPP, and only 21 yrs old (pick6) could possible fill that hole. being still very young, and obviously talented enough to be pick6, this would not be a silly recruitment. i have seen keplar play some outstanding football in his first season, though this season Sheedy fuked him up, swinging him forward and back like a yo-yo. his demise was brought abotu very similar to Miller's decline under Daniher. he was not given time to consolidate a position. The one reservation id have in picking him up is that he has not shown he can successfully play as a key defender. his best football has been played as a key forward... would not be a huge risk considering that we're getting him for nothing.
-
incorrect...he's been delisted once. he was TRADED for a FIRST ROUND PICK after only 1 year at adelaide to bring him home to Vic. now after 2 seasons at StKilda he has been delisted. he's only 20yrs old 196cm FullForward. with Neitz playing his last year we have to have a few options of young players who could improve and fill the hole of FF for 2009. after being injured almost this entire season, he showed good signs in his last 4 games at vfl level, kicking 7 goals one game. im not suggesting that he's a gun, however would be worth the risk of a low pick up PSD pick.
-
this thread has been done only a week ago... btw i do believe Miller will have a big role to play in our starting 18 next year. Bailey has made it clear that he has big plans for him. as a 194cm big bodied KPP, who runs his but off and takes a nice mark on the lead +already 50 games experience...miller has alot to offer if he can get his decision-making right. hopefully bailey can help him
-
by the looks of things... at pick 4 we are looking at either Masten or Palmer (whichever CAC rates highest)...an outsider for pick 4 would be McEvoy. at pick 14 some rippers should be still available...im hoping Myer, Rioli, Collier or maybe even Rance if he slips. at pick 21 a player like Gourdis, Geatner or Bellchambers would be great picks. looking forward to 3 very highly talented youngsters to add to our list. at pick 56 we could go for a smokey, but i wouldnt be upset if we went for a guy like FergusWatts (if he nominates for the ND) or a sandy player (Valenti?)
-
Gardner has a very well-known disgust and intolerance from drug-abuse. he is the most outspoken president in the afl on this issue. add to this the fact that we are trying to reestablish our culture. plus he's 29 and doesnt fit our under23 policy. there is less than zero % chance he will come to Melbourne. YM is just a bored idiot who tries to impress everybody by making a million wild predictions. once again, your prediction that he will be picked up by MFC is/ will be incorrect. the fact that u guessed he'd be sacked...when this was pretty obvious probability for everyboyd...is no big deal. just get over it
-
firstly, old55 u sound pretty patronizing...assigning homework...mmm secondly, there are many quality KPP taken after our failed picks at KPP. draft of 2002- we picked up Nick Smith at 15- this was well above his predicted worth! Smith is delisted having played like 1 game KPP picked up after pick 15 include: Stephen Gilham- pick 16- starting FullBack Hawthorn Brent Staker- pick 37- starting 18 WCE Tim Boyle- pick 51- starting CHF Hawthorn Brad Fisher- pick 72- Key forward in Carlton's top 10 players Daniel Merrett- pick 30- starting FullBack Brisbane Will Minson- pick 20- Ruckman/KPP Bulldogs non-key position players that were picked up after pick 15- Malceski ,Selwood (Bris), Kade Simpson, Selwood (WCE), Ebert, Cloke (fathersons) draft of 2001- we picked up Luke Molna at 9- this was well above his predicted worth! pick 26 Aaron Rogers...another failed KP pospect that did nothing. KPP picked up after pick 9 and 26: Matt McGuire- pick 21- Starting CHB StKilda Mark Seaby- pick 22- Ruck/KPP WestCoast Ashley Hansen- pick 38- starting CHF WestCoast Jarrod Waite- pick 46- starting CHF carlton Brian Harris- pick 71- starting FB bulldogs Lewis Robers Thompson- pick 29- solid KPP Sydney- premiership CHB other non-KPP to be picked up after our blunders- Brent Reilly, DanSanto, Jason Gram, Campbell Brown, Rodan, Sam Mitchell, Montagna, Dane Swan do you still think there were no KPP available after our blunders? there draft blunders (particularly NickSmith and Luke Molan as first rounders) have significantly set our club back. we still have no super reliable CHF or CHB. our continous inability to draft key position players has not only meant we still have gaping holes at CHF and CHB, but we'v wasted so many picks on KPP well above their true value when we could be picking the best available. maybe im wrong, but i speculate that James Frawley was the best available key backman at his pick, rather than the best available player. i could be wrong, but if this is the case, until we find great KPP in the draft, our drafting will continue to suffer
-
even if the afl choose to penalize WCE with draft penalties (1 in a million chance of that happening imo) then they will penalize westcoat's first round pick- pick 13. they cannot penalize picks gained via the trade of players. so best case scenario for us is that WestCoast lose pick 13, upgrading our pick14 to 13, which will hopefully ensire that Cyril Rioli or Alex Rance might still be available. i still would not be surprised in westCoast went for local talent in Masten with pick 3, leaving Cotchin to 4. but people should remember, that these predictions of players abilities do not difinitively suggest that one player is better that the other. id love Cotchin, but there not really much evidence to suggest he will be a better midfielder than other equaly highly rated midfielder like Masten or Palmer. picks 3,4 and 5 have often proved to be better players than pick1....what does that mean to us?...well it means that all the top picks are very highly rated, and until they are in the afl system there is no knowing who will turn out better
-
cousins would be a bad influence on the playing group. his unresolved drug-issues would be a huge distraction. even after the first final (after Cousin's outstanding return to football), i never wanted him to play for us. this season WestCoast imploded from within. sure they were still competative on field, but its only a matter of time before their disturbing culture catches up with them. i wouldnt touch cousins with a 10-foot pole no matter how good a footballer he is. plus, he's 32. clearly he doesnt fit in with our plans anyways... it is so obviously clear that a main reason Judd left was because he was disgusted by his club's environment. incident after incident...Fletcher almost o.d over the summer...then kerr's phonecall to his drug-dealer when they were discussing the helucinatory effects of his last hit....cousin's drug-issues...chick's drug-issues...these incidents only the tip of the surface. i know all clubs have drug-related issues to some extent, no doubt. however, being part of a footy club myself, i can only imagine how disruptive and disturbing these issues have been. i dont want MFC to ever be like that. say NO to players who will be diruptive to the club's environment and culture. it will cause effects all the way through the football club
-
ben Mckinley is contracted for next year so isnt an option... Fergus Watts is our realistic option who is young and would potentially add alot to our side if he clicked his game like he has the potential to
-
pick4- Cotchin, Palmer, Masten or McEvoy pick14- Rioli, Collier, Myers or any top10er that slips through pick21- Selwood, Gourdis, or any first rounder that slips through. We MUST take best available player, however 1 of the top3 picks needs to be a key position player, and atleast 1 needs to be a quality midfeidler midfielder (i.e. not a flanker). psd pick3- Brennan (unlikely), Jude Bolten (unlikely) or Fergus Watts rookie- Valenti
-
in the PSD we should not touch Whitnall...we are building a team around our under23. recruiting whitnall goes against our current philosophy, and if we're going to break our stance on over 23s, only do it for a genuinly great player! the only uncontracted players we should be looking at in the psd are under23s who we see as having some potential to move into our starting 22! DO NOT PICK UP AN UNCONTRACTED PLAYER FOR DEPTH! best option: Richmond pick up Fraser/guy Richards Carlton pick up a youngster because they can't afford to give Brennan 1million over 3 years bc paying Judd 1.2 million a year. Melbourne pick up Jarred Brennan! If Brennan isn't available then options include 1) Fergus Watts- 21 yr old 196 key forward. was pick 15 in 2004, before being traded to the saints in 2005 for a pick17, so obviously has ability. was injured almost all of this season, but came back in the last 4 matches to kick 7 goals in one vfl match playing at FF. would be a good pick-up. only query for me is why StKilda would let him go, especially considering the retirement of Gherig and Hamill... are there other issues, or do they have Kochitszke and Reiwold pinned in the forward posts? 2) Kane Tenace- people bag him alot, and not without reason. however was pick7 in the Mclean draft (many people rated him top5 pre-draft) so again must be highly talented. he has pace to burn which would help our midfield. has average disposal though. unless he improves, he would not make our starting 22. but, maybe he just didnt get a look-in at geelong. if he clicks, could be exactly what we're looking for. 3) Pfeiifer from Adelaide...don't know much about him, except that he was extremely highly rated when he was drafted only a couple of years ago. a first round pick around pick15...i remember hoping we'd pick him up as his write-ups were impressive...could be good pickup, but im just guessing.
-
minicheif, it seems uv played under18s with a few of these guyz... but it seems pretty surprising ud rate Palmer over Masten and Cotchin. granted palmer looks awesome, especially considering his championships and what he's done since...but Cotchin is rated by some the best player in the draft and seems outstanding. Masten also seems rated higher than Palmer (just) by many... care to explain why palmer is better option to draft that these 2, considering this is against the tide of popular opinion
-
players who could still be available at pick14
sylvinator replied to sylvinator's topic in Melbourne Demons
agreed, but also because he fulfils one of our desperate needs atm...not only will he be a great crumbing option, but will eventually add speed to our midfield that will compliment Jones,Mclean, Sylvia and Moloney's hard bodies... my ideal (but realistic) draft result would be pick4- Cotchin, Palmer or Masten (any of these would be great, whoever CAC rates highest) pick 14- Rioli (unless Rance or Henderson fall through...unlikely to happen) pick 21- Gourdis (we need to keep preparing ourselves for post Neitz)
