A good first up effort I thought 'Dee'...

...has missed a lot of football but there's a lot to like about him.

When he gets his fitness levels up I reckon he will add a more to his game.

Can see him as a very mobile ruck/forward.

Also appears to have put on a lot of upper body size while in rehab.

STOP POSTING GROSS THOUGHTS AND I’LL STOP YELLING AT YOU!!!

Anyways, unless up-skirting in public restrooms is considered photography then I’d hazard a guess that BBO isn’t into photography.

First of all that's all in the interpretation. Secondly I think you are very close to personal abuse of BBO and way out of line with your comment. I understand you don't like what he says but you keep taking the bait. If you had of questioned him taking photos inside the kaftan you might have got a better response. I will quote Mrs Dw here "I don't get boy humour". You obviously don't either. I use to think your to and fro responses to him were humourous and lighthearted, clearly he now knows how to push your buttons and that has now turned into something else. Put him on ignore and me to if you are unhappy with what I have to post.

Must be a generational thing, then, gentlemen: I'm in, too.

Do you do it with milk? Guilty pleasure!

As some will know, I try to stay away from this thread but again find myself inextricably drawn back into it's web. The first confronting thing I read is mention of BBO followed by the highlighted question/statement. Dare I keep reading I ask myself. I don't know how to unassociate the two but I curse my vivid imagination.

Well....quite..  If Hibbo is going along ok...id leave him alone..  When "needed" Bowey ...imho ...becomes the fillip, possibly..  but not necessarily.

I would have Hibbo as the preferred player... if not....  then WHOEVER is the next best.  That might be Bowey or it might not be. He only got his chance because he was showing form...at the right time. There may occur another player who is knocking at the door similarly.

We need to keep an open mind.

I did say there is no immediate need. A number of people seemed to miss that bit.

For mine the question regarding Bowey emanates from his coming into the backline in the first place. He came in to replace injury. .And it worked.. but is anything set in concrete...in footy ?

Currently our backline is working the best it has in ages..    So why is Bowey needed...i.e.. is there a crying obvious NEED to bring him straight back in ?... atm ?

    I would suggest... NO

It aint broke...dont fix it. Defence is going ok and meshing better each outing.

While there is no immediate need, Hibberd will continue to be managed and Knuckle as a first year player (in the ones) may need a freshen up before finals.

    Nibbker can't play down back?

He should stop spending so much time down there then.

And Smith can play down back?

I think it's fair to say that's not the consensus on demonland.

Never mind Demonland, the Coaches have made it plain by playing him forward.

How dare he talk about our @dworship like that! 😂

I'll have you know I was enjoying my cheese board and Merlot. Besides, I said I was LOUD not inarticulate. I have also been known to be quite gracious when speaking to opposition supporters. Some of them appear perplexed when I tell them I'm working on my sincerity.

Absolutely! We have flags of every size, right down to little ones that are perfect for a 3yo to wave. Your boys won’t ever wanna sit anywhere else. 🤗

Incidentally, I did something I’ve always wanted to do on Friday night. When everyone had left the ground post match and it was only DA packing up, I had a go at waving our biggest baddest flag, much to the amusement of our guys who btw make it look easier than it is. I didn’t take anyone’s eye out so I’m chalking that up as a win. 😁

Knowing you WCW, I would of thought the flag was waving you 😁

Part of this thread was about our lack of vocal support for the benefit of the players. My comment was an attempt to explain that.

Well done The Army, I hear you at well timed periods.

Being outnumbered has never quietened me, but aggression has.

I also like sitting higher so I can observe the nuisances of the game.

That's why we're Redlegs. I shut up an entire bay of Richmond supporters  one afternoon at an away game . I've already mentioned I'm loud, very, very loud. Mrs Dw was worried we wouldn't get out alive. Consequently she wont go to away games and wouldn't sit in GA.

I am not suffering, the small amount I have is enough, the system cannot victimise me. I am a frugal person, living within my means and consumption doesn't interest me.

The Dee's give me something like a hobby, gets me out and about, and emotional drama. Just hope the price for attending doesn't get much more expensive, that the cheap seats aren't pushed too far away from the action, or the aggression from the division between opposition supporters becomes less "boo" and more "good play, well done" by the other team. Otherwise, a fence will come between the greater AFL community.

One last thing, perhaps it is harder for Dee supporters (noise volume) as we in the outer are often out numbered.

If you want to feel the noise go hang out around the Dee Army. You don't have to be a member of the Army to sit with them. They love the extra voices. I've done it and I know of a number of people who sit around them but aren't members.

Some areas of Melbourne have now become dangerous due to poverty, deprivation, lack of opportunities and aspirations of those living there.

    Has Ballarat got that?

Society is splitting. Two tiered education and health systems, social/entertainment events where access and quality is based on financial capacity, plus a huge wealth gap that determines opportunities.

Actually, we're Redleg Members so on the opposite side of the ground (in more ways than one).

I've worked and lived all over Victoria and have travelled to some poverty striken countries and there will always be haves and have nots. I do take your point about the gap getting greater. It's called the "transfer of wealth". These things are cyclical. Where we are in the economic clock at the moment is where people with real money swoop in and buy up shares, businesses and property. Knowing that is not helpful but it explains a bit. Being on the wrong end of all this is not pleasant. I've been there when I was younger and struggled with 17% interest rates. We had 3 maxed out Credit Cards and were buying groceries on a Coles Myer card. I made some good decisions and was lucky enough to get a better paying job but it took a decade to dig our way out of the mire.

One of the better decision I made was to move back to Ballarat at the right time when things were much cheaper. Yes, Ballarat has all of the problems you've mentioned but I think it's a proportional thing and so far it's not out of control. If jobs start drying up and interest rates put people to the wall that will change.

All I can say is, I wish you well and hope the Dees bring you a bit of cheer.

The world has become a two teared system.

Those who can afford to get through the doors into comfortable areas, and the others.

I am of the  "other", and I feel aggrieved that money makes such a difference to participation and perks.

The world is no longer egalitarian and what social class one is born into is the greatest marker for having a seat in the members area, corporate box or in the outer (metaphor for life experiences).

The higher social class gives members in that family so many more opportunities and ease to success, than the majority,  is amazing to me.

The main quality difference appears to be greed.

Given I have had to pay to upgrade my GA tickets, and the seat is not any better, it is making even a H&A game an expensive experience.

Your experiences are different to mine. I feel I have no power to change that, and that it is in the hand of your class to impact and tear down the walls. Within that structural separation, I wonder if I can still call you my brother or sister. Tempted to call you "boss" or "master", as the lower classes slip further away from the Aussie dream of egalitarianism.

I know I have unrealistic expectations but, the world is accelerating towards a greater separation of us.

I'm truely shocked by this Kev. I understood you live close to the MCG and by that definition alone you are in an elite position. I grew up in Doveton in a Housing Commission home and Mrs Dw grew up  in Syndal and went to Syndal Tech. When our kids got older and she could come to the footy with me again, I knew I had to buy her a Redleg Membership so we could sit among fellow supporters or the alternative was to get into fights with oppo supporters. I definitely don't look on us as "others" but I do understand how the divide is getting greater. The way things are going you may be seeing more people slipping back. One thing I will never do is forget where I came from. As to egalitarianism I don't believe that has ever existed but I can say that in my experience Australia is still one of the best countries in the world in which to live.

The problem with the rules around ‘holding the ball’, ‘incorrect disposal’, ‘prior opportunity’, ‘dislodged from the player’s possession’ and so on, is the utter inconsistency around their interpretation. The shambles that is AFL umpiring make it impossible to predict or trust any decision. It’s by far the biggest blight and embarrassment in our game, and sadly makes many games almost unwatchable. For which there is no accountability or even discussion. How the coaches and players cope with it, I don’t know, but presumably it’s just what they’re taught to expect.

While I agree there is a lot for the umpires to consider in a tackle you can see them going through a process and it's why sometimes the blowing of the whistle takes more time than anyone would like. Sure there are variations in result and that is to be expected considering different umpires and positioning/view of the action. As far as supporters are concerned most don't understand the holding the ball rule and that there is a process. We often say this is inconsistant or incorrect interpretation but is it really? I sometimes go back and rewind/slowdown a play and find myself rethinking what I thought the decision should have been. I'm not saying there aren't any mistakes but some will always occur. I also think  many of the commentators contribute to the angst around decisions by not knowing or completely understanding the rules.

How does the AFL improve the decision making? That's tough, I worked in an environment where an outside party was providing training on rules and procedures that had been developed by my organisation. What we didn't know was the trainers where introducing personal interpretation into the sessions instead of following/ teaching process. I'm not saying that's what is happening with Umpires but I've started to notice some things with head high tackles lately that makes me wonder about their training. Head high tackle rules have become more complicated due to the AFL's tinkering but I'm not sure process has kept pace. What I'm seeing is a focus on the tackled player and their actions rather than the tackler. Process should always dictate that if the initial contact is high then the free should be awarded. What I'm seeing is players ducking/ shrugging/ raising the arms up to break free, when the initial tackle was high. This could become a inducement to tackle high and someone like Kozzie could be targeted because everyone knows he will try to duck /shrug etc. I know all the other issues are complex, what about charging into players with the head down/ dropping the knees? This is why process is so important, I've long held the view that the Umps need to be full time professionals, forget about this 4 umpire system and concentrate on them being better trained and educated and that is best achieved in a full time environment.

Feel like you already have the answer, but just to add. Free kicks don't get paid if the ball is knocked out in the tackle.

"For the avoidance of doubt, a Player does not elect to Incorrectly Dispose of the football when:

    (a) the Player genuinely attempts to Correctly Dispose of the football;

    (b) the Legal Tackle causes the football to be dislodged from the Player’s possession."

Pretty much how the doggies got away with dropping the ball when got tackled for a long time.

You have uncovered my plan to have JJC do the homework. You have also mentioned another of the misconceptions the  vast number of supporters have. Every game I hear supporters from all teams shout "that's dropping the ball". That rule no longer exists and has not been in the rules for many years. The AFL tinker with the rules all the time and many supporters get left behind and become frustrated because they think the umpires have got it wrong. Another that many have not caught up with is "deliberate" being changed to insufficient intent. I haven't minded that one as it seems to have reduced the bad calls when the skill is performed poorly or the randomness of the oval ball has an effect.

    Not worth consideration, obviously.

In an effort to help you out, look up the holding the ball rules, you could even post the rules here. Then we could have a discussion about your "idea" or not.

I do wish we made a lot more noise though. You can be loud without being the moronic type of pies supporter. It def influences umpires when the crowd is in full voice. At the Freo game their very few supporters were extremely loud. I know for the fact the club acknowledges that we’re “too quiet” as a club. You often see on the screen at home games …messages asking supporters to make a noise .

Yelling "come on Melbourne" in a whiney defeatist voice followed by "pathetic Melbourne " is not helpful.

We are a quiet crowd and that ain't changing in a hurry

We're reserved, conservative and dare I say it, civilised!

It's a point of difference that doesn't bother me one tiny bit.  It's who and what we are

Urging otherwise is a waste of time and effort as I've been hearing the same thing since the 1960's

You clearly don't sit anywhere near Mrs Dw or myself. I had to move from where I was sitting for the Carlstink game because I was making a small child cry, I was that loud.

Our crowd for Carlton was pathetic again.

Under 50,000. Our home game. Carlton outnumbered us easily again even though they're a lost cause.

We better show up on Monday.

I don't know how many times I need to say this but Friday night fixtures don't draw the way they used to after COVID.
There just aren't the numbers in the CBD. So the typical knock off drinks then on to the Gee aren't happening.

You say that Carlton outnumbered us, what did you do, count them?

Mrs Dw and I werent there and I dont need to explain why to you. Frankly, I'm a bit sick of judgemental ........ people, like you ( funny coming from someone with a high horse).

    Before you feel compelled to reply /defend yourself, think on this;

A lot of our members prior to 2020 were over 50 and if you took a straw poll on this site (maybe something Andy has done) you would find that to be true, and they're the tech savvy ones. Those same people are now 3 yrs older and find a 750 start on a Friday night harder to get to. Some of those same people find it tough to take 2 or more hrs to get home and then there is the safety aspect. It's why I've started staying overnight more. With that comes more cost.

Our membership numbers have risen a lot over the last few years. I know of many members who buy a membership for all our home games knowing that they may not be able to attend any/ few games but want to support the team financially. So here is an idea; keep your shoot from the hip comments somewhere they don't offend.
