With the round 4 game in Adelaide on Thursday, and possible the aflw grand final on the Saturday, any news on the cup coming to the city of churches?

I'm going to a function with the Queensland Demons on Saturday, before the game, and the Cup is attending as is the CEO. Prior to that I believe it is at a Sporting Globe function, so I will assume it will travel to the City Of Churches at some stage. Perty promised it will continue it's tour and I expect it will be in the Alice as well.

Is this anger towards Bont serious?

Bont made a fair and legal tackle. Wasn’t a free kick and no intent to hurt. It’s a contact sport and these things happen. He is a pretty fair player. Can't say I understand the thinking that he deserves some sort of square up for a tough, fair tackle.

    You are obviously new here.

I don’t understand what’s confusing people about this situation. It’s pretty clear.

A media organisation has to be seen as holding up certain moral standards or norms in line with societal expectations to both:

    1. Commercial maximisation. All companies want to maximise the size of their audience/customer base to make more money from advertises in this case. Societal norms have progressed to the point where Morris’ comments are WELL against the norms and standards the majority of people now expect. If you go against these standards then (rightly in my opinion) you will lose advertises. Simple choice. Get rid of him. He’s now irreparably toxic from a commercial standpoint.

    2. To not allow for their to be a culture of discrimination or the creation of a hostile work  environment hence leading to lawsuits.

Now, given Morris’ statements. It actually doesn’t matter if they were private or not from a workplace or media perspective. You can argue that most people have made comments like this in private… but… Most people aren’t public figures that represent a media organisation that explicitly operate on optics and advertising for money. Optics and him as a person are a part of his job. Don’t like it, don’t become a public figure.

The fact is, they’re not private now. He’s a public figure and he represents a media company. So for Fox to keep him on would be opening themselves up to A LOT of legal and commercial consequences.

If you aren’t prepared for the professional consequences of your words as a public figure, then, DON’T SAY SEXIST OR RACIST THINGS. Again, optics are a massive part of being a public figure in the media. Especially your words. You as a person are the job when you’re a public figure.

Also, think about being his co-worker whom he’s now publicly sexualised and made her sexual orientation known to everyone which is HER BUSINESS ALONE. The mental health repercussions of outing peoples sexuality can be immense. Tom Morris is not the victim here.

To re-iterate. If you’re a public figure working for a media company that works almost solely on optics, if you don’t like the consequences of your words affecting you professionally, just don’t say them. Otherwise, expect to be sacked.

    It’s simple.

I actually didn't mind too much what they said.

I think guys like Trac and Oliver are cocky because they know how good they are. Michael Jordan was extremely cocky and knew how good he was, but he also worked extremely hard. That's the difference between being cocky and just drifting along with your talent, to being cocky but also a hard worker.

Look at the Cats during their dominant period. James Kelly was pretending to be asleep when singing their song that's how cocky they were.

As long as we have players who hide away their NS medal I'm sure we are not overly cocky.

Anyhoo, I've a barcode for R1, I simply can't get there, sadly. The Wednesday night schedule is most inconvenient. Will be at Metricon for the Suns though if any DLers will be there.

    Barcode R1, hit me up

Yep, accom and flights are booked. Be interested if the Qld Dee's supporter group have anything organized pre/post game.

That's like a foreign language to the players!

Good one Mazer, Bowey during the Carlton game looks at the Ump and sqeals  "what about in the back!"

Maysie should have said: "no Bowser, I shoved Hawkins in the back and he cannoned into you". "Oh, and stop being a whiny little.."

Perhaps go the Rugby Union way. No players allowed to talk to the ref unless spoken to by the ref. Only Captain can question or speak to ref. Players can only respond with, “Yes sir” when spoken to by the ref.

This, but I think a Captains challenge also needs to be introduced.

I feel like if we spoke about the AFLW players in the same way; referring to their “bums” “butts” “cracks” “big butts” etc, would result in the thread being deleted and/or a warning/ban. All for talking about players putting on size/trimming down but talking about “big butts” and the like, is a little distasteful.

The term "butts" is simply the shortened form of buttocks which is the general anatomical term used to describe the gluteal region containing the the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus. Nothing distasteful or disgusting. If we are going to talk about distasteful, perhaps we should start with having a crack at your current avatar. Then again knowing you, your comment may have been tongue in cheek.

On the opposite side, 2 years ago Tmac looked way too bottom heavy, didn't look like he could move as fluently as he once did, didn't have a good season and was subsequently shopped about at trade time.

Last year seemed to slim down in the glutes and got back to his best

Unfortunately, he was encouraged to put weight on so he could play the big full forward role ( like Tomahawk and have a look at the size of his backside). It's a testament to his character that he didn't make anything of that and when it didn't work he went away and did the hard yards to get back to being the player we see today.  I don't think you can suggest he has a skinny little bum now either. In fact he looks really powerful at the moment.

Agree on all of the above.

The other thing i'd add is we are a systems based team. And with a flag under our belt we have proof positive that the system works, so we have complete team buy in thta system (not that we didn't have it last season).

But also another year to cement that system, so it becomes completely automatic. Every player coming into the team understand the system and know what role thay have to play in it. I think that was a huge factor in the Tiger's run of success.

As a case in point; during the Nort game Hibberd had possession in the backline and was looking down field and to his right. Sizing up his options he decided against anything further down field and wheeled left and kicked in one motion to Ed Langdon. He didn't look first, he knew Langdon would be there. I've started to see this in other plays and this is the confidence in team mates to be where they're needed to be at any given moment. I've banged on about belief for many years and once you have it in the coaches, the players, the system and the plan it's very difficult to breakdown on any sort of consistent basis. Of course the other knock on of this is speed of movement.

Winning one is hard enough, but this year will be much harder in my opinion.

Our defensive positioning/game plan and sagging back seemed to catch most teams off guard last year - we can be sure they will all have detailed plans to beat it this year. Add in COVID outs, a few injuries presuming we don't miraculously avoid them again, and who knows. Most teams rely pretty heavily on their top 6 and we are no exception. A long injury or three to the group of Oliver, Petracca, Gawn, Salem, Lever or May would make it tough.

Personally, I think we still look very vulnerable to very tall/resting ruck forwards (all of the big bags kicked against us last year fell into this category) and expect a number of teams to capitalise on this whilst also backing their half backs to handball through and around our speed forwards. Collingwood game last year shows the blueprint.

As amazing as we were we had our fair share of luck last year. Winning one without it (or maybe without as much of it) is the test from here on out.

There is a distinction between "plans" and "plan execution", like last year I think it's a difficult prospect for 80% of the competition. I cannot see a breakdown in our concentration and we know the system works. A lot of teams tried different things last year and the consistent comment was "Melbourne are just so disciplined and well structured behind the ball". If we don't go backward in this area opposition sides will again be held to low scores.

  13. I love big butts!!
Pickett has got me posting in an exuberant way!!
Please don't judge me for what I say!

I love big butts and I cannot lie, those skinny butt's make me cry!!

A previous poster (apologies for not remembering whom) posed the question about Harmes looking stronger.
At the time I had also observed he did look (in my eyes), more powerful.
My memory (feeble as it is), had me recalling an interview with Jason Akermanis after he had an ordinary season with the Dogs. He said at the time; he had lost too much of his arze (backside) and it was robbing him of his "power". Roll that forward to our current Demons team and (please don't judge me) I can see a lot more size in our players butts and upper thighs.
There are not a lot of skinny little bums our there. I believe this is a deliberate strategy to increase our power away from stoppage and tackles. I don't know who is behind (pun intended) this but either Burgess or Selwyn and regardless, I hope it puts us ahead of the curve.

I have my rnd 1 team based on the practice game. It's a bit controversial as I don't have Bowey in the 22.

    B: J.Smith, May, Lever

    HB: Salem, Tomlinson, Hibberd

    C: Brayshaw, Petracca, Langdon

    HF: Neal-Bullen, McDonald, Pickett

    F: Fritsch, B.Brown, Spargo

    FOLL: Gawn, Oliver, Viney

    IC: Harmes, Jackson, Rivers, Sparrow

    SUB: Bowey

You have me questioning my sanity W'dee, I so rarely agree with you. I would have JJ as Sub however, Bowey is no where as flexible as JJ.

I firmly believe that he is honest as the day is long, loyal to the nth degree and I think he will improve his media presence with confidence. He is also humble and unnasuming, and this last comment from someone who claims to know him quite well.He is also a very driven person who sets high standards of personal integrity.

You are right PF, I was pleasantly surprised in Trac's performance in front of the camera over the last 12mths. He too exhibits all the qualities you spoke about. More kudos to JT and the recruiting team for sticking fat with the philosophy around good citizens with honesty and integrity. Nice guys don't necessarily come last and the willingness to sacrifice for the team success is essential in building the "team" we have become. Goodwin must also receive some acknowledgement for this ethos. I cannot think of a time where I have been prouder of this Club and that's not just because they have ended 57yrs of pain.

Agree, Oliver number 1 for me.

football media prefer trac, because he has the looks and is more charismatic and likeable

I disagree, Clarry is an awkward  but likeable soul who may not have a "public" persona that suits the media but what you get is authentic and honest. Too me that makes him likable and in some ways,  unusual.

I’m a big Smith fan and not always big on Tomlinson but I don’t see them in a head to head battle.

We’ve seen Lever at his best with a 2nd genuine tall and wth Petty out that’s Tomlinson.

But it’s not all bad news for Smith. One thing Tommo provides over Petty is more uncontested ball and rebounding skills. Which then changes the balance of the backline and raises the chances of Smith over Hibberd, Riv or Bowey. Similarly with Smith in the side May can take a less defensive role and provide more kicking and run.

    Thank you, this

I know it was the premiers vs the wooden spooners but our clean hands, sharp feet and speed of ball movement is unheard of at this time of year for any side. Joel Smiths performance and Benny Browns continued improvement with a big preseason were the key factors other than the standards we now expect from Gawn, Clarry et al. Rivers and Bowey were underwhelming and both would want an improved effort against the Blues to lock themselves in round 1. Chandler aside from 2 goals just has no impact and does not have the manic defence or link up class of Nibbler, Kozzie or Spargo.

Rivers was the same at the start of last season, he took a couple of games to find his groove, Bowey I'm not so sure about. Let's face it Chandler was just in as a place holder for Fritta. If Fritta isn't ready for the next game I would like to see Toby Bedford given the same time on ground as Chandler.

Maybe. Though he looked good today.

But Smith is more suited to Petty’s role with his ability to zone off, spoliation and take intetcept marks.

    Smith was dynamic today

On today's performance I would think more Bowey back to Casey. Could be 2nd year blues or him just trying too hard to keep his position. Wouldn't do him any harm to go find some "touch" back at Casey.
