Completely agree. It’s why the AFL needs to abolish ANZAC day. Don’t want the AFL to be the arbiters of morality. Weird to honour a military force that has partaken in illegal invasions. Seems like the AFL is posturing to society.

It is very hard to decide if using slurs is right or wrong. I personally was happy when the AFL was appointed to sort out this very very very very very difficult moral question.

I love the logical extension of the ‘toughen up’, ‘sticks and stones’ and ‘it’s just name calling’ sentiments I’ve seen around this. I can tell my friend that works in counselling women that are recovering from emotional and verbal abuse (note, no physical violence) from their partners to just tell those women they’re being too soft and she just needs to remind them of the age old wisdom of a literal poem for children that: Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me. Yeah fair, I didn’t add intercept marks but if I did it would be: Intercept marks 2021: 1st 2022: 1st 2023: 3rd 2024: 5th 2025: 5th So 2021 and 2022, this would have boosted our placing up quite a bit defensively to probs 1st overall. But it doesn’t affect the downward trend of us being worse as 2024 and 2025 is the same placing of 5th.

Saw a discussion between @At the break of Gawn and @Dr. Gonzo about forward connection VS defence in the ‘Simon Goodwin Sacked’ thread and thought I would have a look at some stats, year by year, in terms of team rankings per year. (Not trying to prove who’s right and wrong, just thought it would be an interesting set of stats to look at to compare how much better/worse we are). Scoring/connection forward: I included inside 50’s, marks inside 50, marks per 50, marks taken on lead, total shots, accuracy, goals inside 50, set shots inside 50 and averaged them all out in terms of ranking per year. 2021: Avg. 5.5th (marks taken on lead we were 5th!!!!!) 2022: Avg. 10.75th 2023: Avg. 10.6th 2024: Avg. 11th 2025: Avg. 11.6th (marks on lead we are 16th!!!!!!) 2025 is our worst scoring/forward connection year. We’ve basically only gotten worse…. —-——————————————————- Defence: Includes defensive 1V1, loss %, tackles, tackles in D50, pressure acts, defensive pressure acts, Spoils. 2021: Avg. 4.8th (1st for tackles that year!!!!!) 2022: Avg. 9.8th 2023: Avg. 7.14th 2024: 9.7th. 2025: 11.8th (14th for tackles this year!!!!!) This year is our worst year in terms of defence metrics. I had heard that was the case in the earlier years but I’d say that in the year they got to the Granny, that team throughout the entire back half of the season was filled to the brim of these lesser players. They had the 2nd worst injury list that year! If I can remember, I think at stages they had 3/4/(5?) out of their starting backline out but kept winning. And I’m not disagreeing with you, just pointing out that year he was able to squeeze as much out of the second 22 players that came into the side FWIW.
