IMO, Flower was a level above elite. I'd say elite plus Gary Lyon was elite. Schwartz was elite, Pre injury. Stynes close, if not ?

IF, they are thinking of doing away with the VFL, then they are thinking of playing teams twice a week. I hope not, because it means BIG changes, less players on the ground, list, and shorter Qtrs, games, etc... more geared to the Internet/TV. Moving further into the soccer/basketball space. I'm concerned 'they', are going to butcher the game.? If they do, it won't last in Australia. But possibly will overseas.

Our failure is inward thinking, imv. Just thinking inside the square and inside the parameters that has always been at the Mfc. This is why we have mfcss. Our club has to get free of the 'G'. And build our home base. Our own HQ, for the training, offices, and for the supporters, to know and feel at home, and feel they belong.... This = Identity. Its a big part of what we lack. And it would be ours for all important events, including those Dallas Brooks Hall type meetings etc. Which grow to form the history and the fabric of the club. It's where our historical Photos would be, our Premiership cups would be, and our, hopefully, Boards would meet. This in-turn would alter the style of the Boards, and would hope we would become a bit more 'Footy Savvy', from this change of address. The stuffiness would get a breath of fresh airing. I believe this would make us more attractive to a wider group of footy minded people, to get on board the Dee train.

In truth the club was back in power in footy, from end of Barassi's reign, right through till the end of Daniher's time. There were plenty of opportunities, and the club wasn't quite good enough in itself. It's not players who win premierships. It's 'Clubs', that win them. Everyone within the club has an impact on the teams outcomes. We have never really got the club back to that position again, it was at its best from 1985 through til maybe 1995. And the slip had started, IMO. Slowly slowly declining. Until we hit the mid noughties, and the list was stuffed.

Goes to show that our Mfc Boards had little idea how to grow the cub, because they were all inside the old-club thinking, that we were the MCGclub, and that was all we were. Beholden to the 'G' and to handouts, because of this. Even later with Diamond Joe, we still couldn't decide what, and/or where we could be based. Caulfield or where.? The Bentleigh club facilities would have been fantastic if located at the Gosch's paddock ovals.

Good post, 'H2014'. I sense and have had the thought for some years, and because of our perennial low ladder positions of yesteryear, and a dash of Mfcss... that when we get to having a strong list, is that we all over-estimate our list of that time, and we ease off the further building, looking to go all in... and that we look to top-up players to fill a niche. I think the overestimation comes from us swinging from Mfcss, straight over to Cockiness. A coolish arrogance. Lets try, when we think the list is good enough, think again instead, that when we think it IS, then we need more talent.
