I have always been a big believer in the idea that the draft is for the best player available

    True.

And if you dont like the player who will be available at your pick, then you try and trade the pick up or down the list.

I remember Groom arriving as a great savior but never really delivered.
    Similarly Templeton.

Wheatley as has been said above could have become a very good player in a decently run club and most reminds me of Fritatta of all the 31s.

But Fritatta is definitely the most succesful #31 since RDB.

Surely he delivered enough to win the B&F in 1968?  And a hamstring away from being a premiership player.......

Given that he served as Premier of Tasmania, you'd have to say so.

However, Brian Dixon served 18 years in the Victorian Government after being elected in 1964 while still playing for Melbourne.  I can't imagine that happening these days!  Dixon was probably best remembered for introducing the "Life.  Be In It." campaign while he was the Minister for Youth, Sport & Recreation.

Groom - also a Federal Govt minister

  4. One of the commentators said that Fritta was the best footballer to wear  #31 since Ron.  Another said 'What about Ray Groom?'. Well here is a list of players who have worn 31, courtesy of Demonwiki.  At one stage it looks like we tried to demystify the #31.

Ray Groom - 92 games, 36 goals. B&F 1968. Missed 1964 with a hammie.  Most successful politician to wear Red&Blue?

    Billy Barham - Rickys brother

    Paul Goss - Norms brother

Peter Garratt - no not that one

    Phil Carman

Kelvin Templeton - averaged 3 goals a game at the Dees but didn't bring ultimate success.

Rod Keogh - Trevors nephew.  More success at St Kilda. Played in the 1997 GF.

Donald Cockatoo-Collins - Che and Davids brother.

Paul Wheatley - famous for kicking the first super goal.  Un realised potential?

Tom Scully - the less said the better.  He can 'gut run' into obscurity.

    Jack Grimes

Bayley Fritsch - premiership player who averages 6 goals in a GF.

To me it is Fritta vs Groom (vs Templeton).

Does anyone remember Groom playing? All I can remember is that he collided with a goal post.  Certainly none of the above can beat Bayleys medal.

  5. Why on earth would we want a 29 year old?  We are not coming up to a premiership window, we have smashed the door down and grabbed the cup.

Our goal to goal line is starting to look old.

Lets pick someone with youth and exuberance, which is what won us the cup.

    St Kilda perhaps...

Not really sure where I sit on Sparrow.

I think his kicking and decision making still needs plenty of work. Even choices that paid off in the grand final weren't always the best ones IMO. The low percentage long goal off a step could've been a quick kick to an open Ben Brown 35 out. And the square up kick to Brown early in the last came after a wide open Spargo on a short lead.

But at the same time he often doesn't rush and has the ability to create space for himself and he executed the choices he did make to perfection in the grand final.

And his defensive work rate and physical impact is always really strong. The AFL app has an 'average speed in defence' metric and he's usually right at the top of that. So he motors to defend.

Mids who can genuinely contribute across half forward and rotate on ball are super valuable and important too. So I've got a lot of confidence in his ability to play a role. I just don't have any conviction one way or another on whether he'll keep improving to become a top line midfielder or not.

I know where I sit on Sparrow, absolute fan.

2nd and 3rd efforts are great.

Sparrows kick to Fritta for his first probably would have gone through for a goal.

Agree there were other options other than his long bomb but as ND said 'You can break team rules provided it comes off'.

Danny Hughes could easily finish BT right off…

Made for each other those 2.  I remember Danny and Brian were having a traditional wrestle on the ground and Rodney G ran in and tried to break it up by pulling on Brians jock strap. Brian did not like it........
