POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 8
Rodney (Balls) Grinter replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
On another note, he may not have set the World on fire with big bags of four or five goals, but my take is that Jeff Garlett is back to his best this season and has been consistently good in most/all games that I remember (probably our most consistent small forward). His forward pressure was pretty good (again) on the weekend with six tackles and my perception is that he has got better at distributing the ball/setting up other players inside 50 and certainly his set shot goal kicking has been pretty solid this year, where previously I thought it was a bit of a shortcoming. He has been important to our team so far this year and I'm looking forward to a day when Jeffy really turns it on and has a day out. -
POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 8

The lead up to the Healy call was that Brown also gave us a bit of a plug for having an unsociable midfield and that Clarry had gone to another level since he'd got off the chicken nuggets! -
POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 8

I actually liked Gerard Healy's quote: "so summing up - message to the Adelaide Crows midfield, get harder and get off the chicken nuggets...it would seem if you want to take it up to the Demons" -
Non MFC Matches - Round 8
Rodney (Balls) Grinter replied to Lucifers Hero's topic in Melbourne Demons
Amazing how tight the half of the ladder is at the moment. Assuming Port continue on their merry way and beat the Suns, they will go from just outside the top eight, to just inside the top four based on just that one result. -
The Cam Pedersen Appreciation Thread

I thought his game last year in our win against the Hawks was a ripper as well. -
Great job Bernie in game 200 - we love you MFC through and through

Yeah, but at least the pink lady ones ate actually still reconisable as a MFC jumper. We seriously have THE wost clash/away/BS jumper in the league. Are we going to play like pink or red for FIRE FROM HELL the socond half

Haven't read the article, but one of the things which have killed our season so far are in game injuries early in games, which have left us out of legs late in games allowing teams/game I think we otherwise should have won over run us - think Geelong and Richmond (the inverse almost happened against Hawthorn). Part of the AFL's rational for the sub rule was so as not to leave a team in this position so exposed and I think the rule actually did serve that purpose quite well. I'm not advocating a return to the sub rule as it was previously implemented, but what I think could work well in this situation is to allow one of the named emergencies to take the place of an player injured before half time. Obviously such a provision could be open to exploitation, but I think a set of rules to reasonably control such abbuse are possible.

Not saying it's right or wrong and obviously game style has changed a fair bit over the last 20 odd years, but Greg Williams, known as both a prolific handballer disposal getter lead the league for both these categories for most of the period between 1984 - 1994, with an average hanballs per game of around 16 and average disposals of 30 - so far this year Clary is going at 23 and 31 respectively.

MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 8
Rodney (Balls) Grinter replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
I'm sorry, but at this point I think we would be just about better off playing a bed ridden Hogan over Weid, particularly given Weid's write up from the Casey wasn't exactly glowing. We must be really desperate for KPPs at present. I would have thought it could be worth giving Hullet or someone a go. -
MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - Round 8

Agree with all these, but I also think ANB for Hannan is on the cards, though I doubt that all three changes would be made in the same week. Nothing particulaly against the players suggeted to be dropped, just don't think they are really hitting their straps at the moment and that those on the ins list are probably fractionally ahead on tallent and or toughness. In general, I think the team needs to come out with fire in their nostrils and maintain that for the entire contest - I don't really think we're done that for a single game this year yet. I'd also like to see Harmes in the side for this reason, as I think he has the ability to bring a combination of physicality/burst through strength that the other contenders carn't quite match. True Harmes's skills can be poor, but my view is that they are hot and cold, rather than inherently limited. On his day, Harmes has the ability to take a strong overhead mark, take on players and break through lines, puts on hard tackles and bumps, has good goal sense and can be a match winner.
