  1. FORWARD SURPRISE Tom McDonald was something of a revelation when out of necessity was moved out of defence and into a back up ruck and forward role. Highlight was the match winning effort up forward against the Eagles. 4. MISSED OPPORTUNITY After an injury riddled 2016, the diminutive Kennedy-Harris had to work hard to break into the Melbourne team and, while he was an often prolific ball-winner at VFL level, he was unable to replicate that form when given a chance. He missed his biggest opportunity when he was at the peak of his form at Casey and incurred the wrath of the club for drinking after a game in contravention of a team rule. 6. Jackson tried out initially at Richmond but the rover was not wanted by the club due to his size. Despite this rejection, he had a successful career with Melbourne where he became a star rover/forward pocket and was a handy goal scorer topping the Dees goal-kicking in 1988 with 43 goals. Most notably he kicked five goals in Melbourne's Preliminary Final win over Carlton that year, although he went goal-less from the forward pocket in their Grand Final loss. A Victorian interstate representative, Jackson was picked up by Footscray in the 1991 AFL Draft but did not break into their seniors. He represented Australia in the 1990 International Rules series. 11. THE VETERAN Since winning the club's best and fairest, Vince has been pushed behind the ball and played a more defensive role as the make up of the Demon midfield changes with younger players being added to the mix. The move might have been partially successful in 2016 but his output declined this year. A couple of suspensions didn't help his case either. 12. DERAILED The tough Demon onballer's season was derailed early by a stress fracture in his heel and he was unable to recover as further set backs during the year prevented him from making a return to the field. Date of Birth: 3 March, 1992 Height: 188cm Weight: 90kg Games MFC 2017: 0 Career Total: 28 Goals MFC 2017: 0 Career Total: 17
  13. It took a few weeks but this could be the karma for throwing the round 23 game.
  14. TIRELESS The Demons received great value from the versatile cult hero Cameron Pedersen who worked tirelessly in the ruck in the absence of Max Gawn and Jake Spencer and as a second ruckman who went forward with great effect and stood up on many occasions when it counted. 15. Jayden Hunt will be representing the Dees in the annual Grand Final sprint at half time. It rounds out a massive day for Jayden who will be competing in the Longest Kick competition earlier in the day. The competitors from the other teams are: Adelaide – Jordan Gallucci Brisbane – Dayne Zorko Carlton – Jarrod Pickett Collingwood – Will Hoskin-Elliot Essendon – Kyle Langford Fremantle – Tommy Sheridan Gold Coast – Steven May Geelong - TBA GWS – Tim Taranto Hawthorn – Harry Morrisson Melbourne – Jayden Hunt North Melbourne – Josh Williams Port Adelaide – Jarman Impey Richmond – Connor Menadue St Kilda – Sam Gilbert Sydney – TBA Western Bulldogs – Matt Suckling West Coast – Lewis Jetta
  16. STRUCK DOWN The veteran defender was struck down by an ACL injury in a pre season game at Casey and played no further part in the club's 2017 campaign. Will turn 30 early next season and there must be some doubt as to his playing future despite having another year left on his contract. Date of Birth: 28 April, 1988 Height: 191cm Weight: 92kg Games MFC 2017: 0 Career Total: 141 Goals MFC 2017: 0 Career Total: 16
  17. NEW BOY ON THE BLOCK The mature age recruit with a powerful left foot was blooded on Footscray VFL's list last year and drafted with Melbourne's first pick in the high 40s. It was an inspirational selection as the high marking forward who can find the goals was easily club's best first year player. Date of Birth: 9 March, 1994 Height: 189cm Weight: 81kg Games MFC 2017: 20 Career Total: 20 Goals MFC 2017: 22 Career Total: 22 Season 2017 AFL Statistics Kicks: 138 Handballs: 110 Disposals: 248 Marks: 49 Scores: 22 goals 10 behinds Goal Assists: 11 Tackles: 60 Hitouts: 0 Clearances: 23 Clangers: 56 Inside 50s: 52 Rebound 50s: 4 Frees For: 21 Frees Against: 13
  18. COMEBACK SEASON Jake Melksham was forced to sit out the whole of 2016 as one of 34 banned former and current Bombers as a result of Essendon's 2012 supplements program. He started off slowly and spent some time at Casey before settling down to have a great comeback season. His second half of the season saw some consistent football when moved from defence into the forward line where he could be relied upon for goals on a regular basis. Date of Birth: 29 August, 1991 Height: 179cm Weight: 84k Games MFC 2017: 19 Career Total: 133 Goals MFC 2017: 21 Career Total: 178 CDFC Games 2017: 2 CDFC Goals 2017: 3 Season 2017 AFL Statistics Kicks: 202 Handballs: 116 Disposals: 318 Marks: 84 Scores: 21 goals 6 behinds Goal Assists: 8 Tackles: 48 Hitouts: 0 Clearances: 21 Clangers: 59 Inside 50s: 65 Rebound 50s: 25 Frees For: 13 Frees Against: 21
  19. FROSTY FINISH The dashing backman added a great deal of energy and zest to the Demons defence throughout most of the season but his form tapered off a little toward the end when he found himself in the VFL. There were many who thought the Demons could have used his athleticism in the vital games he missed when a couple of goals could have made all of the difference to their finals campaign. Has resigned on for two more years. Date of Birth: 28 August, 1993 Height: 194cm Weight: 94kg Games MFC 2017: 16 Career Total: 56 Goals MFC 2017: 1 Career Total: 8 CDFC Games 2017: 2 CDFC Goals 2017: 0 Season 2017 AFL Statistics Kicks: 127 Handballs: 89 Disposals: 216 Marks: 61 Scores: 1 goals 0 behinds Goal Assists: 1 Tackles: 40 Hitouts: 3 Clearances: 4 Clangers: 46 Inside 50s: 16 Rebound 50s: 59 Frees For: 15 Frees Against: 18
  20. SHOULDER TROUBLES After finally getting his body right last year when he became an important cog in the forward line, Dean Kent's form lapsed and he was in and out of the side through much of a disappointing season. Kent was one of four Demons ruled ineligible for selection for Melbourne's game against Sydney, having breached team alcohol protocols after playing for Casey in the VFL but he was recalled for the game against Adelaide in Darwin where his season came to an abrupt end after he dislocated his left shoulder. Date of Birth: 24 February, 1994 Height: 179cm Weight: 84kg Games MFC 2017: 6 Career Total: 58 Goals MFC 2017: 7 Career Total: 56 CDFC Games: 8 CDFC Goals: 6 Season 2017 AFL Statistics Kicks: 56 Handballs: 34 Disposals: 90 Marks: 27 Scores: 7 goals 6 behinds Goal Assists: 3 Tackles: 13 Hitouts: 0 Clearances: 1 Clangers: 13 Inside 50s: 15 Rebound 50s: 4 Frees For: 8 Frees Against: 2
  21. I don't think there's anything in it. They just bumped into each other. If he gets a one then Cotchin gets 2 or 3 and Lewis gets arrested.
  22. I wouldn't mind that either but I don't think that would pass the AFL clash test against the Blues or Bombers or Crows.
  23. STRETCHING THE FRIENDSHIP The youngster struggled to hold his spot in the team this year but showed some good signs at VFL level late in the year. The son of former Demon Steven will need a big pre season to enable him to continue as a developing player in the Melbourne midfield where his dash and cleverness would not go astray. Date of Birth: 8 September, 1996 Height: 180cm Weight: 80kg Games MFC 2017: 9 Career Total: 36 Goals MFC 2017: 3 Career Total: 8 CDFC Games: 13 CDFC Goals: 4 Season 2017 AFL Statistics Kicks: 57 Handballs: 107 Disposals: 164 Marks: 30 Scores: 3 goals 4 behinds Goal Assists: 2 Tackles: 30 Hitouts: 0 Clearances: 12 Clangers: 12 Inside 50s: 17 Rebound 50s: 6 Frees For: 6 Frees Against: 3
