I've learned my lesson making definitive statements about selections when i posted ahead of the Suns game that there was zero chance Melksham would get selected for that game

That said, there is zero chance Culley gets dropped.

He's a very important part of King's game plan:

  • super fit, he can do the defensive and offensive running the game plan demands

  • the game play requires players who can play multiple roles and positions - Culley can play, and has this season, wing, tall marking option up forward, mid and even pinch hit in the ruck

  • Culley has shown this season he has the discipline to play a specific role or task, an important attribute all game plans demand

  • King wants every player to be involved in creating scoring opportunities - whilst Culley has only kicked one goal this season he is averaging five score involvements a game

And leaving aside that stuff he's playing terrific footy this season, as evidenced by his Champion Data player rating this season of 9.55.

By way of contrast, Windsor, who has been terrific has a player rating this season thus far of 7.36.

And Langford, who is playing almost an identical role to Culley has a player rating this season thus far of 8.88

Fascinating. I need to watch more closely. I felt he'd really struggled this year.

When will it dawn on the Bombers that they should have taken the 3 1st rd draft picks on offer for the 30 year old Merrett.

Hopefully tomorrow evening

I heard that Culley and Langford are out on the wings to get their spread more innate so they don’t just become plodders in the middle (ala Carlton mids) that can’t run and spread and find footy.

I think they both are not suited to the wing and are fighting through that uncomfortability in different ways. Culley trying to impact in contests and possibly trying to do too much, and Langford really pushing to get goalside wherever possible.

Yep.

Although I’m not sure uncomfortability is a word. Try discomfort. (Posted with love) 😄

We were until a few hours before game time - they Blues actually started favs (just) in the end.

But blimey, i can't recall the lasts time we started as short as we are against the Bombers - ATM we're 1.24 to win this game, and the bombers are 4.10 (from memory we were very short against the Roos early last season, but I'm pretty sure we weren't as short as 1.24)

I know you're a betting man but the odds were in our favour 20 minutes before the game according to the AFL app that I was reading as I walked into the ground and growing larger.

Also, according to Google, we were favourites.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
