With 3 min to go ,the ball went out on the full and over the fence on to the bowling green. The time-on clock did not stop. We lost 40 seconds.

Also , there was no consistency in the time keeping on ball ups. Sometimes the clock stopped, and sometimes it didn’t.

I think we’d have won with that extra minute, though we probably didn’t deserve to.

An extra 40 seconds could have made a difference given the attack at the end of the match. Even without the extra time, we had chances but couldn't find space.

Just another example of how the AFL is not truly supportive of this competition.

They demand that it grows while providing an amatuer pool of umpiring and officiating.

Half arsed.

And the club should be lodging a formal complaint. As usual, we won't

That would have been some kind of an underserved victory if we stole that one! To be honest, I was a bit nervous about this as our first travel game. Credit to Port Adelaide. Their pressure was great and they made us play their game. At times, some of their players simply looked hungrier.

Cons:

Over-used the footy badly, fumbles galore

Forward connection clearly left behind in Melbourne

Woeful, inaccurate goalkicking

Backline exposed – would have loved Gillard out there

Are we seeing the end of Pearce?

Positives:

Good fight back, got the run and carry going, then more direct

Honestly, winning that one after playing that way would probably not have been beneficial in the big picture

Kate Hore is one hell of a competitor

When we play teams with a physical presence and the ability to put proper pressure on the ball carrier, things tend to fall apart. Often our ball carriers were fumbly and then left stranded without that second layer of support. The Purcell-shaped hole gets larger the greater the quality of opposition – and there’s just no obvious fix for that in an immediate sense. Hanks is putting in some season but she's a 20% better player with Purcell there.

To make finals we need 6, possibly 7 wins total. So, 3-4 more. We underestimate West Coast at our peril.

Really good summary.

I thought Port were hungrier, as you said, and just more solid with the fundamentals - better by hand and foot and more likely to take a mark when needed.

Matilda Scholz is an absolute gun, so no shame to be beaten by her, but I think this may be Pearce's last season.

We're going well, but I do worry about how badly we rely on Hanks, Hore and Chaplin.

I think some people may not be aware that there is no added time on for the first 15 minutes of a quarter in the AFLW, except for after goals or if there is a major hold up, such as play being stopped if someone is injured. Regular time on, such as the umpires automatically blowing the whistle to stop the clock for an out of bounds or ball up, only happens in the last two minutes. The ball rolling about on the bowling green occurred in that 15 minute period so the umps didn't immediately blow the whistle.

Having said that, the point at which it should have been obvious to the umps that we had a protracted delay and time on needed to be called was reached way before they actually did so. I haven't watched it back but I guess they should have pulled the trigger at least ten to fifteen seconds earlier, possibly more. Certainly enough time for us to have another attack on goal, given where the ball was. Certainly I'd realized what was happening and was shouting "Blow time on you (expletive)! at the screen. 👿

I only noticed when they were all standing around waitign for the ball and the clock was still running. If it was 40 seconds we really need to be demanding answers

Thanks, Craig… I was unaware of that detail on time-on in AFLW.

It is open to manipulation, though I’m not suggesting it was manipulated in this case.

Adelaide forecast is 19°, light breeze and sunny which should suit our tall forwards and style of play.

Light breeze? It felt like Casey out there!

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Gold Coast

On Friday, the Demons return to our Casey Fields fortress where they have a 77% win rate. The scent of September is in the air and the struggling Suns are on the horizon. The Cranbourne weather forecast? Ominous, like the match itself: a strong chance of carnage. Let’s be honest, last week’s first half against the West Coast was a training drill but we dropped our guard in the final quarter. While this match is a mismatch on paper — second versus seventeenth — football is won in the wind, the contests, and the moments.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #32 Tom Sparrow

The rugged Sparrow’s career appears to have plateaued in recent years. He makes the side on a week to week basis but he is unable to establish a foothold in the team’s midfield and arguably performs best outside of the contest in a forward position without being a goal kicker. He remains a good honest foot soldier but is not a star.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #33 Tom Fullarton

Fullarton managed a couple of games in the first half of the season but soon found himself back in the VFL. There, he found a niche at centre half back but it was not enough to retain a place on the list at season’s end.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #35 Harrison Petty

Entering 2025, it looked as if Petty would be secured in a defensive position, but plans shifted and he spent more time forward, averaging just over a goal per game throughout the season. It remains uncertain which area of the ground he will be expected to cover under the new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #36 Kysaiah Pickett

The dynamic small forward, possessing an innate ability to generate excitement with his explosive play around the goals, successfully transitioned into a role that afforded him more time in the midfield. The club also negotiated a long-term deal with Pickett, thereby eliminating any prospect of a move west by their star young player.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #37 Kade Chandler

For a few years now, he has been a reliable, hard working pressure forward, but in 2025, Chandler elevated his performance, becoming an integral component of the team with enough versatility to play effectively on a wing from time to time.
