Together with Steven May formed a formidable key position defensive wall. His uncanny ability to read the play and intercept opposition forward moves was, as always, exceptional.

Jake Lever is another of our great defender’s and club leaders who is entering the prime of his career. Jake is a great mark and interceptor, we need Jake fit and firing if we are to lift the cup in ‘24.!!

I love Jake Lever but I'm not sure he's a good choice as captain.

It's a strange paradox - one of the smartest players on our list, but has also had some of the most spectacular brain farts I've ever seen on a football field!

Another factor is that his effectiveness relies a bit much on others doing their job properly. In his role there's not a lot he can do to turn things around and lift morale and intensity if we are faltering.

All that said, definitely a leader and definitely a super valuable player.

Our next captain is going to be a whopper of a decision. Right now just about every candidate on our list is either almost as old as Gawn or in a dedicated role and persona that isn't quite captain-ish. It could be very interesting to see what happens if Brayshaw is given a more central game-defining role rather than the game-saving role he has often been in.

If Brayshaw didn't have his health issues, he would be the perfect captain (IMHO).

Next captain.

Agreed.

I know media isn't everything but he's the media go to man after Max and represents our club tremendously the way he speaks publicly.

The other candidates would be Trac and Brayshaw due to their age profile and solid citizen criteria.

On a side note, it's a bit disappointing he's once again injured his ankle at training. He's had a number of minor ankle issues that have either kept him out of games (think Essendon loss in Gather Rd) or played under duress the last couple of years.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
