As threatened, here's another brainteaser to help you while away a quiet Sunday afternoon.

Like most of my other timewasters, your challenge is to identify what links the players in the team below.

It's a very strong side of past and present champions plus a few good ordinary footballers as well.

In contrast to today's MFC, the team boasts an abundance of talented tall forwards.

You will observe that those who played for the mighty Demons are highlighted in green.

All responses strictly to me in a PM, please.  Updates will be posted irregularly.

Any begging for clues will be ignored unless it's clear that none of you can work it out (unlikely).

I've spared no expense this time around and can proudly announce that there are three entirely new prizes on offer.

First:  Diddly-squat     Lucifer's Hero

Second:  3/4 of 9/10 of SFA     Timothy Reddan-A'Blew

Third:  Bupkis     WalkingCivilWar

Why is it a Bonanza?  Because it will give you something to Ponderova.  (I'll just go back out the same door I came in , shall I?)

B:        Sam Fisher     Tom Stewart     Chris Newman

H/B:   Denis Banks     Ben Holland     Andy Preston

C:       Paul Kelly     Barry Price     Scott Russell

H/F:   Lenny Hayes     Corey McKernan     Jordan Lewis

F:      Hassa Mann     Peter Hudson     Max King

R:     Mark Lee     Jack Clarke     Nathan Jones

I/C:  Ted Hopkins     Scott Cummings     James McDonald     Peter Wright.

The replies are flooding in.  It must be a quiet day for many of us.

Honourable mention to Lucifer's Hero for identifying them as sharing a surname with actors which, while probably true, is not the answer I am looking for.

Other incorrect responses were that they are the names of islands and the names of fishing rods (!!).

I'm impressed by the 'fishing rod' connections!  Well done, whoever that was.

Yes, it was a rather esoteric suggestion and not one that was expected.

I only know them by their username, but I think it might have been Jarvis Walker.

Your wit and ability to word play has no bounds🙃

Glitch has been addressed - try it now, BBO.

edit:  He tried, but alas they are not all mathematicians.

The answer has nothing to do with religion or church leaders.

Nor is there any connection between the players named and their siblings.

Well, what is the answer related to 🙄

  • Author

Clue time it would appear.

Today's teaser has nothing to do with football, but relates to a common factor based upon the players' surnames, as most have realised.

The key is identifying what that factor is.

Don't be misled by the Demons highlighted in green.  That red (green) herring is merely a trap for new players.

We can eliminate the surname being common to singers and also being Olympic participants (people with that surname may have attended as spectators, of course).

Neither are they all 70s musicians.

There is not a TV character connection nor does it relate to law enforcement officers.

They don't share a name with basketballers.  Ditto guitarists.

A couple of posters are close to the answer, but there is still time for new players to get on board.

We can also discard the notion that they were journalists/commentators or poets.

However, we have a winner!  Congratulations to Lucifer's Hero whose persistence has paid off.  Gold!

The answer is not related to professional darts or golf, nor indeed to any other sport.

Some obvious clues are now seeded throughout this thread.  Let's get it over with!

If folks haven't noticed our intrepid puzzler has gone back and highlighted the 'obvious clues' in purple.

Timothy Reddan-A'Blew has made a run to claim the silver medal.

Bronze still up for grabs.  Who wants it?

In the absence of any lingering interest in today's brainteaser, I shall now reveal the link is that the players in my team all share their surname with a keyboard player.

The purple highlighting of the words "key", "board" and "player" was the giveaway at the end.

So onto the real names of said keyboardists:

B:        Mathew Fisher     Ian Stewart     Randy Newman

H/B:   Tony Banks     Jools Holland     Billy Preston

C:        Mark Kelly     Alan Price     Leon Russell

H/F:    Isaac Hayes     Ron "Pigpen" McKernan     Jerry Lee Lewis

F:       Manfred Mann     Garth Hudson     Carole King

R:       Geddy Lee     Vince Clarke     Booker T. Jones

I/C:   Nicky Hopkins     Burton Cummings     Michael McDonald     Rick Wright

Third prize of a virtual bronze medal and bupkis is awarded to WalkingCivilWar.

I'll put up another teaser next Sunday if there is any interest.

Thank you ball kids, thank you lines people and goodnight.

Thanks for all your work, ds.

Today's was torture - a bit easier next time please.

should of had a soundtrack to it 👌

Always curious as to how the medalists worked it out?

Did it strike you immediately when you saw the surnames? Or was it a bit of google trial and error?

I don’t want any half-arzed prize! Even if it is bupkis. This will prove I won Bronze fair n square. Note the time…

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
