or will he be nothing to a fired up Des Headland ?

or is everyone to sceared to speak about headland NOW

Pickett is underdone. He will be good in patches, but i have low expectations for now.

Good to see him back.

I went to the SCG last year when we were 0-3. Pickett played a blinder and we won. Hopefully he can turn it around for us again this year.

He might actually be able to get a touch in the forward line where Davey can't.

But one of our biggest problems has been lack of hard defensive running by our half-forwards, mids and half-backs after our too frequent turn-overs.

I'm not holding my breath that Pickett will help in this area.

He is definatly an asset and will improve our game this week! And seeing how HF was very average last week he would be very good!

Always nice to welcome back an 'A Grader'.

Not expecting too much, but I gurantee Davey will stand a lot taller this week and finally open up his goal kicking account for 2007.

Quite appalling that our opportunist goal sneak has been held goal-less in 3 rounds.

One area he will help is winning contested ball at HF.

While we are winning the clearances, when Junior wins 8 of them, a low % are effective and most go to a contest.

There are 3 outcomes - we win the contest, a stoppage (i.e. another chance for a clearance) or we lose the contest.

I think we have been losing more than our fair share of these contests at HF (that's probably what Godfrey has been in the forward line to correct)

When we lose the contest, we lose possession and then our opponents have had a million options running off our poor defensive effort.

Pickett will help us win more contests or at least force a stoppage, therefore lessening the occasions requiring hard defensive running.

As I said above though I don't expect him to help the defensive running much.

I would pay big money to see him run through Josh Carr (is he suspensed). If Josh is playing and Byron cleans him up (fairly of course) it will be worth my membership for the year even if we don't win another game!

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
