*  Disclaimer:  I know this is the main footy forum, but I'm not sure that many posters look at the other forums.

Well, here we are Demonlanders.  We've survived another Christmas Day and recovered (to some extent) from the self-inflicted food coma.  Those of us not at the MCG are blobbing on the couch watching the Boxing Day Test Match on TV and thinking about ham and/or turkey sandwiches for lunch.  What better time to run the cricket quiz I threatened some time back?

Below is a set of cryptic clues which represent a team of Australian Test Cricketers (including 12th man) from the past 50 years.  They are not in batting order because I don't want  to give too much away.  Some clues are trickier than others.  There is also a supplementary cricket flavoured musical teaser for those who are gluttons for punishment.

Please post your answers in this thread rather than sending me a PM, but I would ask that people restrict themselves to two (2) correct answers to let others have a go

I would also prefer if posters could outline the reasoning behind their answers, but I will explain the solutions if necessary.

1.  Commentator's leg.  LAWSON

2.  Not only a cricketer.  LYON

3.  Hard hitter.  MALLETT

4.  One-stroke engine.  CUMMINS

5.  I belch when his name is brought up.  BICHEL

6.  Made a sparkling hundred.  STARC

7.  Not from Victoria.  Disgusting!!  WAUGH

8.  Grinds away all day.  MILLER

9.  Fishy angler went the hook.  LANGER

10.  Mick wouldn't select him.  MOSS

11.  Went down the Communist track.  REDPATH

12.  They're the rules, young man.  LAWSON

BONUS CRICKET RELATED MUSICAL QUESTION:  Bros sound like they take the opportunity to make music.

GREGORIAN CHANTS

Number 11… Redpath

Redpath is correct.  Communist = red plus track = path.

That was the easy one!  :D

Number 2… Alex Carey (?)

Because (almost) inaugural captain of the GC Suns.

Carey not the answer but I see where you're coming from.

Reminder to all posters to explain your reasoning.

Number 5: Doug Bollinger (?)

Because champagne is gassy and makes you burp?

I’ve got another one but since we’re only allowed two correct answers I can’t post this until I know if the above is correct. Don’t wanna seem pushy @Demonstone but I’m trying to get my answers in before Mazer sees this puzzle and does his usual thing of getting everything right in a nanosecond.

  • Author

Bollinger incorrect.  Fire away with your next answer!

Don't worry about ol' Mazer.  The limit of two correct answers per customer also applies to him.  :D

Number 12: Geoff Lawson

Because they’re the rules (Law) young man (son)

  • Author

Walker and Nash incorrect.  Don't forget the clues are cryptic, not straightforward.

Armstrong also incorrect although your logic is impeccable.

Langer is spot on!  "Fishy" hints at an anagram, in this case angler/Langer.  "Goes the hook" complements the angler part of the clue and also applies to a cricket shot.

3 Warwick Armstrong

Don't think he played in the past 50 years, Mr. Rackham.

You will also need to show your reasoning for any other responses.

No. 2 Max Walker, because he was a test cricketer and played AFL (VFL) for Melbourne.

Is this the correct answer, @Demonstone?

Also have answers for 4, 5, 6, 7 and maybe 2

Of course you do! 🙄

The only surprise is that you haven’t got answers for all of them. Yet. 😑

5. Michael Beer. I belch when I drink this ale.

I know this is incorrect, NC. That’s because I know the correct answer. 😉

Alas, I’ve exhausted my correct answer quota.

Mallett is correct.   All other suggestions are not.

Only player eliminated for being too good thus far is WCW.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.
