One of the benefits of age is perspective. Let me tell you, the commentary is no better or worse now than 40 or 20 years ago. There will always be those that are okay and those that are unbearable. And the ratio doesn’t change much either. Bearable versus unbearable has a ratio of about 2 to 10.

I found the conversation they had with TMac after the game on 7 a really interesting example of what they think their role is. Tom spoke eloquently and very insightfully about the complexity of his preparation and both Ling and Darcy looked at each other in way that suggested this was all a bit high brow for the audience.

I really do think they’ve been told to commentate to a grade 4 level - ‘go in harder’, ‘run faster’, ‘take a speccy!’

Surely it can’t be an accident. It’s such a shame that we have to accept such low assumptions of us as an audience. It’s pretty insulting.

I'm confident the Saturday night commentators are fulfilling what the program producers want. Evidence is Brian Taylor's transformation when he shifted from Saturday night to Friday night calling duties. On Saturday night it was all blokey forced humour (using that word loosely). On Fridays, he's much more committed to calling the game straight.

Also, special comments providers need to come with use by dates. Any commentator who has been out of the game 10 years or more has lost touch with the way the game is played and as a consequence, doesn't really add much. That's why Jimmy Bartel, Jobe Watson, Luke Hodge and Daisy Pearce impress me; and why Matthew Richardson, Wayne Carey and so many others do not.

agree but as you say we are now 20 plus years on when the media has the ability to multi stream both audio and video.

Why should I be tied to buffoons that insist on describing what can be clearly seen.

"stacks on the mill"

"umpire calls for the ball"

"chipping it around"

the list is endless

Don't mind Jobe Watson but not as a commentator. When he was asked a special comments question he said Yes. Called the Weid Weitering.

Who was the nub who called Nev lewis Jetta?
