I think the point is, that there are businesses particularly in regional Victoria who would be dying for some foot traffic. To have a long weekend when we can't leave the house is pointless and does nothing to stimulate our dying economy.

I would rather have a long weekend when I can go away and support a business that desperately needs it, or have a long weekend when we can meet family and friends or go out to dinner.

Yes working and teaching from home is a nightmare and we all need a break. But will it really feel like a break when it's just an extended period of sitting at home? With your annoying kids? Unable to drink socially? Waiting for a game of football that isn't even happening in our state?

I get that, and I would rather that too.

There are however a lot of people out there - and I'd count myself amongst them - who have had to work harder and longer in the last 6-7 months than they probably ever have.

So from my - I suppose you could say selfish and 'right now this is about me and not the economy' - point of view, then yes, it'll 100% feel like a break.

Again, I completely see the other side of the discussion, but right now, any extra time I can get to re charge the batteries will be most welcome.

What are you talking about? It's just giving us back the holiday Kennett took off us when he got rid of Show Day. It usually falls in the middle of the school holidays which is good for families too who often have to manage 4 weeks leave a year with 12 weeks of school holidays.

as i remember it show day and cup day were both 1/2 day holidays. most companies (to avoid disruption) picked just 1 of the two or gave employees a choice to make it a whole day holiday

p.s. and i think some companies (not many) voluntarily gave both as full days

Honestly I couldn't give a rip either way. Would prefer it when things are up and running again but that's not going to happen so not going to waste energy of moaning about it or whatever.

Reading these comments and hearing what everyone is saying it was always going to be the case where opinions were split. Some people lost their jobs and are sick of being at home so it's not a break for them, some people are lucky to still be in their jobs and some people I know have been absolute flat chat and are probably looking forward to a long weekend, some people are working in essential services and are holding everything together and to say they deserve this is an understatement( if nothing else I say just do it for these people). Some people might just want to mentally shut off from their job, everyone has a different situation and plenty of different reasons.

For myself, I am still working with my hours cut and at home, we've had massive drop off in productivity and all round motivation is down. I don't see much benefit to having a day off personally, if I have a day off work or a long weekend I'm not all that interested in spending it at home. I'd prefer to be getting outside or going away somewhere, that's what I feel I need right now. But that's just my situation and I would be more than happy for the people craving it to get it.
