Favourite Dees

I went to the footy just to watch Flower.

First saw him when he came on the ground as 19th man @ Collingwood in the Reserves > The Athletic Glasses made him look like a little skinny kid. C'wood barrrackers laughed. After he had shown half their side what he could do they were calling out "Kill the kid!!!!"   Bast day of football ever except for beating (belting)  North in the final in his last year.

Unbelivable footballer !!

Current : Gus or Jetta plus afew others.

Very difficult to limit it but I will do my best:

The shadowy years
Alves, Wells and Flower. Honestly, these three were guns but unfortunately Alves and Wells left for success.

Re-emergence
Flower, B Lovett, Lyon, A Johnson

Amazing era
Lyon, Ox, Farmer, Tingay, Yze

More dark days
N Jones, Jurrah, B Green

Current,
N Jones, Brayshaw, Jetta

Not our choice. Scott & family had a falling out with Neal Daniher - He went home for family reasons.

Yeah, he wanted to go home. he wouldve become one of the dees all time greats. I knew it. I don't think the dees were aggressive enough.

Memories.  I remember waiting in the MCC grandstand during the 70’s for Dad to finish drinking with his mates in the Redlegs.  I’d wait ages for him.  Mostly thrashings in those days but sometimes we got down to the rooms and afterwards the atmosphere was great after a win.

Ray Biffin, Laurie Fowler and Paul Callery were so fair dinkum and young Robbie was fair with skill sublime.  Those interstate games at least gave him a moment to shine.  To think my father drove us home after how many pints...

I fondly remember spud Dullard, loved Big Carl,  Fabulous Phil, Brent Crosswell and Peter Moore in the RednBlue.  Brian Wilson joined us from Footscray and won a Brownlow in 1982.  It’s not widely known, but one VFL umpire who knew him very well told me he voted Brian favourably when umpiring his games that year which I guess helped secure the games best & fairest award that year.

Bones Grinter, Stinger, Strawbs, Jimma, Sean W, Neita, Vines, Lovett, the Febes, Schwarta, Lyon, Ouze, Whizz just great boys that gave their all for the jumper.

We always tried seemingly hopeless guys from other clubs but so many succeeded.
Faves include Henry Coles, Kevin Dyson, Jamie Shanahan & Ricky Jackson.  Just think how many recruits we have in our current team.  I was there and Liam Jurrah’s debut against Essendon at Etihad he was amazing.

Anyway Oliver, Max & CP5 are brilliant footballers who hopefully lead us to premiership glory...go Dees

In my living memory the number 2 was the best player in the VFL. My friends and I (who all followed other teams) would go only to watch the number 2. His quickness of mind, body and skills were something to behold. I went to a game and watched Steve Smith kick out, after a behind was scored 17 times to a contest on the wing, and the number 2 would either mark it or bring it to ground and still be able to win the contest. His freaky ability to run towards a marking contest and then turn to face the ball and leap, vertically, in-front of the opposition just as the ball arrived is a skill that I have not seen any other VFL player or AFL player emulate. He had the most amazing ability to read the flight of the ball. I think you are able to see this skill in replays.

I remember watching WOS (Sunday Morning after all the Saturday games) Sheedy was a panelist. He quoted on TV that he thought number 2 was the best player in the VFL at the time. The beauty of this is that it is on tape.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
