The Spectre of Private Ownership Looming Over AFL

Possibly not private, but if they are for sale, maybe the Tasmanian govenment could buy them out and relocate them, instead of funding Hawthorn and North.

They cost money, but if the AFL wants to capitalise Sydney, now is the time to keep them.

Union is dead (they might not survive this) and league is so greatly reliant on pokies that they will hurt from this for years.

If there was ever need for two Sydney teams, now is it.

Rugby is not the enemy of AFL.   If anything,  they are our brothers.

Soccer and Basketball are the dangers,  in a tighter financed world,  where less players,  on smaller playing surfaces are more easily managed.

Isn't James Hird in the buying / selling clubs caper these days? I thought it was soccer clubs but maybe not exclusively?

I'd laugh if Hird sold the bombers.

Heading down the sensible path with this suggestion, but instead of GWS it should be Gold Coast.  Two problems solved with one move.

Ha, Or sold them out.

Relocation of the GCS to Tasmania is the way to go but other than a few million a year I cannot see anyone down there interested in ownership.

Back in the late eighties some teams played with public ownership (share listings etc) but it didn't really work out. One of the problems is that in an insolvency the licence reverts to the AFL so the actual asset values held by the clubs is limited.

Relocation of GCS to Tasmania would also put pressure on North's existence
