We all know that the best site for following the mighty Dees is Demonland but I would be interested to hear about other sources including developing media.

I'm a big traveller and one of my go to places for research is Youtube. The product by some vloggers rivals if not exceeds anything you see on the mainstream media.

But what about sport. There's the Roar which is great but are there any other quirky sites for following particular sports.

Cheers

I see The Mongrel Punt pop up here and there but I don't know much about it.

I see it requires paid membership to read the full articles  but there are certainly some interesting topics.

Not sure whether the fees on the membership page are monthly or annual $6-$25

PS.. they are monthly fees

Good topic. Whenever I listen to the odd podcast, I think to myself how I get so much more out of it, compared to listening to same old footy media identities wheel out their groupthink rubbish. I am keen to hear some good recommendations.

The Athletic is incredible!!! It’s US, Canada and UK focussed if you like Hockey, NBA, NFL and soccer.

Its a subscription model, $5pm I think I pay but it is so worth it. Basically what they have done is hired away all the best journos for the dieing papers in the US, Canada, UK and put out amazing content.

Used to love Deadspin before it was gutted.

'Roar'

Generally good scribes.  Some are good on analysis rather than 'click bait'.  Insightful and largely unbiased commentary.

Sometimes they use statistical analysis techniques rather than just present tabulated data.

Has anyone noticed a growth in independent youtube commentary for the world's mega teams.

If you have a channel with around 1M followers which is not hard to imagine for the mega soccer/NBA/NFL teams you can earn (as I understand the complicated algorithm) around US$400k a year. Of course the footage would be highly controlled but commentary and fair usage is free in most countries.

Hard to see how one could make it work financially for an AFL team but for cricket (especially with an Indian spin) it could be a goer.

Podcasts:

The Grade Cricketer - they have some top guests.

The Howie Games - he is a bit of a f l o g but again he has some amazing sporting guests.

6 different ice hockey podcasts.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
