Pea hearted efforts on the field.

You may choose to publicly allude to personal circumstances, I'll only comment on his football performance. Which do you think he'd prefer to have aired online?

Wish him the best, he was great to watch when switched on. Look forward to seeing what he can do up north. But the last couple of years his efforts on the field were terrible.

Check your outrage LN.

Look, can understand where you're coming from, just think there's better ways to put things sometimes.

May I suggest you could roll with something like "lost appetite for the contest", "didn't play with intent" or even "lacked the will to apply pressure" next time? With a growing number of players having very real mental health problems, some even retiring due to it, I just think it's time all of us started to think more about the things we say about young people playing a game we love.

From what I saw, Garlett turned up for 2019 with his heart really focused on footy again. He trained well, he seemed determined to put last year's hard and bad luck and personal misfortune behind him. Then he did his shoulder in an early pre season game and did it again when he came back. That's got nothing to do with a 'pea heart', that's just plain bad luck. I also note when Garlett needed to put his body on the line in those games, he was fully committed. Yes, his heart wasn't in it when he froze to death at Casey in 2018 but who knows what was going on behind the scenes. There are too many on this site who expect AFL players to be switched on robots who just follow orders and go to their football graves kamikaze-like. I prefer human beings, flesh and blood types, guys like Jeffy who could make a football sing.

Its actually a very accurate comment.  I watched Jeffy play at Casey in 2018 & for whatever reason he was poor & not trying very hard.  Everybody is subject to different personal circumstances & pressures but when you pull on a jumper & get paid a bucketload of money you have to expect criticism.

I can't see why he gets judged by different rules than say Stretch or Kennedy Harris.

Absolutely CF. Couldn't agree more.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
