Dees Plan to Turbocharge the Midfield

I expect both of these guys to be really solid, hard-working players that will help the side improve its consistency across 4 qtrs through hard running.

The recruiting team should be congratulated. They targeted these guys a long way out and got it done with a minimum of fuss.

If we can get our hands on a really good small fwd or two, this ship will turn around in no time.

Bring on 2020.

Of course it's a flakey article. It's a Herald sun article. About the AFL. In October. 3 strikes.

It was a flaky and misinformed article. Soft journalism imo

Jeez, a fair bit of angst for a simple article that makes a correct point that Tomlinson and Langdon will mean players who are not natural wingers wont have to play there, instead playing where they are more suited. Which will improve us.

I thought the comment about Tomlinson do some ruck work and allowing gawn to push forward more often was interesting actually.

Didn't tell us a whole lot we didn't already know, however:

One thing that did stand out form the article is the 'time on ground' average for both players.  I think Tomlinson is around 85% and Langdon at 86%.  They compared this number to Scully, one of the hardest running mids around according to Jay Clark, and his TOG is at 84%.

The idea here is that it will give our in and under mids more time to rest during a game, whether that be up forward or a spell on the bench, and will keep us fresher for longer, giving us the ability to play better footy for sustained periods rather than just short bursts.

The Scully comment was interesting, in that I understood Tomlinson bettered him in time trials whilst at GWS and was generally coming in first in those consistently.

The TOG confirm this important ability for sure.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
