The Thommo Lillee days were big but that Ashes series marked the start of perhaps what was the longest period of sustained domination by any team in cricketing history.

India have come close but at best they matched us,

Hard to compare earlier eras as they played comparatively few tests.

Good point DJ

And during that era we had any number of top players who couldn't get into the team (mainly on the batting side of things but a player like Stuart MacGill might have got 500 test wickets if Warne wasn't in front of him)

And to win 16 tests in a row (twice) was just incredible.  We were blessed with talent for a prolonged period of time.

God its cold in Ballarat tonight.......pfft

It will be interesting to see if and when England go on the defensive.

Another 20 runs without loss and I think the balance shifts

Ovaltine and Leach are getting us off the hook here......

Smith he plays the ball so late....i always think its got though and suddenly its crashing into the ropes.....

And another 50 to the professor........26 fifties and 26 centuries.

You still with us Macca.......

ok... 30 overs tonight

2 overs for change over

we want to bowl 6 overs tonight

22 overs to score 90 runs...next 10 overs important

but hell what do I know

So many possibilities DJ

Whats the go with the Oval? Which side will it favour? Someone said something about the coin toss before.....

How many bouncers can you bowl in 1 over...6? I still thought it was only 2.....

Privileged to watch this innings by Smith.

That temporary stand reminds me of one they built at one of the stadiums in Russia for the World Cup

Yes we are very privileged indeed.

Edit: Bugger.......going for the big hit 82

Pretty amazing when your lowest score in a series so far is 82.

Well theyre gonna have to break the run chase record again if theyre going to beat us. Have you noticed Stokes hasnt bowled, so hes injured.........

Or 0 for 2 as the Poms call it.

Only rain can save England now (you'd think) Went audio only late and next minute I was woken up by the Joe Root dismissal.  Great delivery apparently by Cummins.  Smith supreme (again)

Only a low chance (10%) of precipitation tonight so the Ashes are there for the taking.

But that's what I said going into the final day in the last Test!  I also predicted that they'd win the series 3-1 after we blew that test so who am I to judge Wadda!  Anyway,  I occasionally get 'all' emotional!  Gotta own ya own words.

Go Aussie!

Edit:  Will we see a final twist tonight?  They can't win but they could save the test with one of their batsman having a 'Faf du Plessis' type innings.

Here's the next possible chapter ... we set them 385 and we bowl 8 overs at them tonight.

Not quite Nostrodamus but damn close (383 & 7 overs)

Might start up a horoscopes thread.  Bit of money to be made apparently.  Just tell people what they want to hear.

"You'll be coming into a bit of money soon"

"How soon?"

"Soon"

Ah, the old audio only status. Good idea ! I listened to my first Ashes with the crystal radio under my pillow hearing Bob Massie take the Poms apart with16 wickets over in England together with the old pencil into the desk special effects trick to recreate the ball hitting the bat !

Ye indeed it was a glorious late evening session and the bowling by our boys certainly went up a notch. I cant see them holding out all day to be honest. They know theyre beaten now. Root was the one who had to hang around for a few sessions and the look on his face after his second first ball duck for the series, said it all. With Stokes carrying a shoulder, he didnt bowl all innings, it would be a mammoth effort. Once, but not twice.

Still one thing you cant do in this series is predict anything. Weather can change quickly in this global warming era and their computer models arent 100%. Tonight will tell.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
