I'd keep him above ground, myself, and just give him some tips on how to kick a footy. I recall when I played Under 16's the coach took me aside and gave me some tips. My kicking improved overnight.

We see the problems, clearly and often. It does not take much to resolve issues with set-shot accuracy. A good kicking coach is a very necessary member of the FD team and it is where instant results can accrue. All forwards need target practice, regularly and in this practice will develop broad understandings of their technique, action in varied conditions and the subsequent flight of the ball from a range of distances.  It is time that we had a strategy for more effective scoring and passing.

It's also occurred to me that we're talking about Professional athletes. A Forward's job is mainly to kick a winning score. If a professional athlete can't even get the bloody basics right he isn't earning his pay cheque.

That is very true and surely, one or two from a whole listing of players will do very well in kicking or contributing to winning scores from a reasonable intensity of regular practice. Often, it appears, that the forwards are practising in real-time, game-time and with many of these professionals, and confidence is just not high. Look at Dean Kent in recent times. He kicked the goals that counted when the chips were down, despite other frailties in his game (due to injury in the main). Reliable shots. We have had a plethora of extremely good players capable of high accuracy. All teams have these. Appropriate practice will identify this for the FD; at the present moment, it is a lottery. For us, the Members and supporters, it is not good enough and remains an oversight in player maintenance.

Melk hold the ball almost horizontal to the ground when he is lining up for a drop punt - its a bizarre way to kick a footy. Our better kicks - Salem and Fritsch - hold the ball on a more vertical axis and drop it low to the foot before releasing their hand.

TMac holds the ball very steady and low down minimising also the potential skew to his foot - the exact opposite of Petracca. TMac lifts his leg straight and high. Petracca slams the ball from so high on to his boot it rarely connects cleanly.

Clarry kicks for goal with a real cross kick angle. His right leg goes from way outside the line to way inside the line. As a result his set shot kicking is terrible.

Drives me spare that these guys don't practice technique more.

They're young. they might not understand about,  'outside to inside swing',  Yet.?    and the effects of.?

Trac's set shot goal kicking needs to be seriously addressed by the club. It's simply not good enough. I can't just be a confidence thing. He has a beautiful kick on the run.

On That shot on goal on the weekend, I said at the time watching it live I was amazed he even made contact with the ball. I haven’t watched it again but I think he was spinning it in his hands then dropped it from too high and the wrong angle onto his boot. And we saw the result, a wobbly floater.

What happened to simplicity? Just drop the ball from a low height or better place it onto your foot as many indigenous players seemingly do to devastatingy effect.

These people are full time professionals so there are few excuses for this [censored].

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
