I’ve been thinking about the remaining list spot that seems destined to be held over for mid season, and as no one else seems to be talking about it too much wanted to start the chat.

Hayden McLean was one player I was hoping might be looked at but seems he is going way of the swans now.

Anyway what do you think the clubs thinking is. As simple as hold off to mid season and see what we need?

Or is it more strategic like I hope, there are usually a few state league players that raise the bar each season and push top 20 draft picks, are we hoping to almost snag a  top 20 draft pick freebie. If so I wonder how the draft order will work. Hoping lower clubs can’t just throw 3 blokes on ice mid season and slot into the top picks but who knows!

ponder away!

interesting

I would have thought as of round one the teams that can have a pick are given a draft order

then if any club get a player on long term injury, they then get a pick next and so on

otherwise the bottom club/s could just put someone in ice ( so to speak) and get pick one

Hmm... I assumed that it would carry over from the 2018 national draft. I.e, we passed on our round 6 pick and didn't pick anyone even though we had a spot available. If there is no one who passed before our pick or subsequently have used it in the Preseason Draft then we would have pick one of the mid season draft.

Will have a look and see what I can find online.

It's believed the order of the draft will be based on the ladder positions after round 11, though a number of other ways to determine the order of draft picks have been considered.

Carlton seem to have 2 spots left. Melbourne, GWS and Gold Coast have one each based on the links in the article although GC may have used theirs by now.

Makes sense to fill that spot now - with the odds suggesting another spot could open up before the bye (and if not, we can take a pretend bat to JHK's knee). Jake Neade or Mitch Grigg if they're eligible (although the latter has said he would turn down another AFL opportunity). Or, seriously, as has been suggested, get Lewis on the phone to Cyril.

Haha never mind. Hope Jay proves an inspired choice.

Was hoping JT has his eye on a Fritsch/vandenBerg/ dare I say even Harry Taylor style player who f could nab early, perhaps not to be.

we got our man..Jay Lockhart...good pick up. I believe.

Worthy, I think as well, jcb31.

If nothing else,  he will give his all...  and we might be surprised.

I don’t mind that we took Lockhart but I think we only picked him because we lost Nietschke. This basically gave us an extra pick. Our club is very good at forward thinking these days and I’m of the opinion that we will be focusing on a kid that maybe wasn’t picked in the draft this year. The kid might be in a VFL system or even playing u18s again as an overage player that applied for the draft this year. It could be a way of getting a kid that possibly might move up to a top 20 or 30 pick for free. It’s how I would use the extra list spot.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
