1st Elimination Final 2018 - Melbourne v Geelong. Follows 12 years of misery ....

In 1987 - Melbourne played North Melbourne, 4th v 5th in the Elimination Final. Then 23 years of misery of no finals ...

back then a young Todd Viney (in his first final) snaps goal of the day - the first goal of the game - and the roar that reverberated around the ‘G was heard far and wide, sending shivers down the spine of those at Arden St, every Melbourne supporter and put all other competitors on notice; the sleeping giant had awoken - for what followed was a tsunami of momentum.

Fast forward 31 years later and Todd’s son Jack Viney returns to a team firing in recent weeks having created some momentum of its own.

In ‘87 the support and noise together with inspired, pressure footy created momentum which propelled the team forward.

Today this team ranked one for contested ball, pressure, high scoring is already tuned for finals footy. Mix in the support & noise from the fans and watch the magic happen on the field.

Go Demons!

The two loudest roars I've heard from Melbourne supporters:

Travis Johnston's third quarter goal vs Adelaide in the 2002 Semi that put us up by 2 goals. And the final siren of the 2000 qualifying final vs Carlton.

Nothing has come close since. I suspect that, should we kick an early first goal tomorrow night, the roar will trump all of those before it.

I’d like to see a ‘Demon Decibel’ metre by Channel 7 tomorrow night,  like the Toiges had in their prelim last year.

I reckon we might surprise people with the noise tomorrow.

The other link with that Elimination Final in 1987 is that we lost to North twice that season in the H&A  one being with a kick after the siren... from none other than Alastair Clarkson playing his first game!

the 2002 final is one of the more outrageous games I have ever been too in my life I don't think I have seen a game swing as much as that ever so when we were doing well the crowd was going off its head

Unfortunately did not experience this drama live, was in London at the time and this was pre smartphones/streaming/social media. Ended up just reading the result in an internet cafe 2 days later.

    TRAINING: Monday 16th December 2024

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

Demonland's own Whispering Jack was not in attendance but he kicked off proceedings with the following summary of all the Preseason Training action to date. We’re already a month into the MFC preseason (if you started counting when the younger players in the group began the campaign along with some of the more keen older heads)

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
