Our Versatility

We do have some versatility but I don't actually mind the idea of keeping a back 7 largely together, keeping a forward group with maybe 4 or so permanent forwards and then just mixing some mids and forwards for different stages.

Goody did a nice job of settling guys last year. Some versatility but not needless chopping and changing.

I like that idea. What about using the interchange mostly for midfielders ?

I have an image burnt in my mind of a set-up with three permanent forwards and five permanent defenders who all spend almost the whole game on field, saving energy by keeping more or less to their areas of responsibility. One ruck and nine 'midfielders' (in the expanded modern definition) share the rest of the on-field space and most of the bench time.

I guess it'd work best at a lower level than the full professional, when players don't have time to learn complicated structures and cycles, and where fitness is more variable.

But when you have the versatility to mix and match and give a bit of tactical momentum, with a top level professional team you should go for it.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
