Declan Keilty

Featured Replies

Question for the regular VFL watches.

Im interested to know what Declan Keilty's kicking disposal is like. Would this be considered a weakness of his?

I see a big weakness in our key defensive players kicking skills and decision making. A team like Essendon has a huge advantage that their CHB Hurley is a threat with the ball in hand. I think in modern footy you cant hide 2-3 poor users of the footy in the back half.

The match reports of Keilty sound good, but wanted to see if hes much of an improvement on McDonald brothers and Frost?

Unsure about Keilty but you make a very point and one I've been banging on about for ages. Kicking efficiency is horrible on our list & we only have two blokes out of our whole squad that I'd trust with ball in hand. Ironically it's Watts and Salem, two that people want to trade. Hawthorn recruited and drafted elite kicks and built a game plan around it, which they could execute. Some of our players disposal efficiency looks good only because of overhandballing and cheap handballs out the back but anyone who watches a game live knows our kicking is generally horrible. It's one of the main reasons we finished 9th instead of 1st this year IMO. Effort being the second reason. A lot of times we brought effort but couldn't hit the side of a barn. It's a big issue that needs to be addressed quickly.

I think that the 2 Mac's will play other positions than defence. We tend to forget when J.Smith prior to injury (1st time) that he was doing a wonderful job. At one stage White looked the goods in 2016. Keilty could be a defender but has not got the skill to hold down CHB. Quality mids will help the forwards and defenders look good.

Kilt is a reasonable kick. Better than Tom, but probably the same as Oscar.

On another note, Fritsch is the one for me. I'd be happy to take him with our second rounder. Kid can play.

Lol.

Where?

Somehow I don't think a forwardline of two Macs, Hogan, Weed, Pedo and Watts is going to work..

Steve……… I didn't mention that the two Macs were going to play forward, secondly players have to win their position.

That's true they wont all play in the same side. But at least it's some depth.

I'd be disappointed  (depending on offseason moves) if t mac didnt teain as a permanent forward

Can kick a goal when he doesn't brain fart

I've got a strong feeling goody has the same thoughts on backline weakness as us on demon land.

He cant get upset and upheaval everything mod season. Only offseason

Yes, kicking is Declan's major weakness, very little penetration, especially compared to Frost and O-Mac and nor does he have the smoothness when going sideways like Oscar - ultimately that may stop him from making AFL on a regular basis. But he's probably a tad quicker and more gung-ho than Oscar at this stage.

But you have to remember he's only been in our system for one year and was awe-struck for much of the pre-season. If he can improve the distance on his kicks, then he's definitely worth a shot as the rest of his game is AFL standard and his attitude and willingness to work seems good when I've attended training.

By the way I did notice that Dion Johnstone's kicking at training during the final week was infinitely better than what I saw him produce at the start of the season - I originally compared him to a yapping dog, but he's far more refined in the way he moves now and a debut up forward won't surprise me next season.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
