Our Best Lineup

What about the games where Yze kicked 5 against the pies?...do people just forget those games?!! That was a finals like atmosphere. not only is yze in the 22, starting 18 every game. It looks like, unlike the Miller selection, that myself and the melbourne footy club selection committee finally have some common ground and that is Yze.

Freak, it was a final like crowd but Collingwood were a rabble that day and may as well not shown up. It was a one sided game where MFC literally dominated all positions. it was a long way from September. They are exactly the game where Yze will dominate. Little accountability of opposition, easy possessions and exploitable weaknesses.

Your common ground with MFC footy department may be more like shaky ground if he performs like he usually does in late August/ September. He may start in initial 22 but he will have to perform ot stay in it.

A combination of kids and veterans. But after watching the Freo final, perhaps we are further away than what we'd like.

Its just that I nearly spat my coffee out when Old mentioned that Robbo, Yze and Davey are fighting for 2/3 spots for our best 22. Ofcourse he may be correct, but it just seems like a very left-field suggestion at this stage.

Perhaps this is the kick in the pants that all 3 players need!

BBP, you fail to recognise that final football is a higher tougher standard of football where accountability, pressure and hardness for the ball (and the man) are at a premium. It tougher more demanding football than H & A.

Yze - too old to learn. Has had too many chances already and has not improved. An annual shrinking violet who the Club should eke what it can out of him because there is no certainty he will deliver at the business end of the season He is no certainty to be in the best 22 come seasons ended.

Davey- Very skilful but easily put off his game (eg St Kilda). He lost it under pressure. Needs to dominate a final to be the star many are proclaiming. Youing enough to still do it.

Robbo - Loved Robbo as a player for many years. But injured or not, he needs to do more when he does not get possession of the ball. Game is changing and the Ryan O'Keeffe types are dominating the game with their work ethic. Robbo needs to improve big time on that. Agree with Fan, that Robbo is at risk if he does not improve his efforts when the ball hits the ground.

I still have hopes for Bizzell. I know I'm one of few.

Couple of points with him.

Once upon a time he was among our best footballers for a sustained period. In the 3 years after he was traded to us. He's played periods where he's been our best player for matches on end.

While he's grown old, he's not a geriatric. He's only 30, not 33. There's plenty of great 30 year-old players still going round.

It's not like he's played the majority of matches during his fall from grace. He did miss a whole season due to injury, not a failing old-man's body or bad form.

The MFC backline is very much up in the air at the moment. Players like Whelan, Rivers and Carroll are ironclad, but other guys, like Ward, Bell, Holland, CJ, Bartram or whoever you've picked will rotate plenty. Our 3rd tall defender is completely up for grabs, and while he's only 188cm and 88kgs he does, or did, play tall. We could find ourselves out of players very quickly if disaster strikes, or bad form finds us, and Bizzell, like Wheatley is a versatile and importantly, experienced defender.

There are plently of cons to throw in, but for now, I think we only need consider his strengths. He's miles from being picked at this stage.

He's miles from being picked at this stage.

If the MFC were of this view, they would've done a Nicho and more or less forced Bizzell to retire. I'm tipping they still see life in the Biz.

They'll unleash him for the NAB Cup (fitness permitting) to see if he's worthy of a rd 1 spot

HAHAHA

u guys got ripped

apparently hes in our best 22 over the last 30 years

No one is denying that Yze was and has been a very good footballer. Whether or not he gets selected in the best team of the past 30 years is just one person's opinion and as the topic shows, it has created much debate.

The problem is that in recent times his efforts and form have not been the best.

Many people here believe that this decline in form and effort does not warrant his selection in the Melbourne 22.

fairly routine, but their were some hard chices to make

I liked greens game against freo, cleaning up around the backline, he has the class, the mongrel and attack is almost there, adds more leadership down back, and now his ankle spurs are hopefully gone, his kicking to miller leading up the ground will be awesome

Holland is there unless someone else makes a major claim to the position, whether it be Paul Johnson, or Frawley, or some of the older guys (Bizz, Fergs) Holland is our best option

Im going to have miller ahead of Dunn, who will come in eventually, especially if Robbo doesnt fire, I like Millers game, gives us more space in the forward line for Neita to create havoc

as for Yze, if he doesnt fire, he is done, but he is one of our best ever, so he needs the opportunity to prove it

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
