James Harmes - Rising Star

Could he become a mid? Doesn't do enough to be just a forward for me long term. Contributing every week, but not big games

I think he adds some good run to the side

He's forming a handy habit of creating goals in key moments of games. Obviously he was instrumental in the Watts goal on QB, then this week he caused a goal where no goal was to be had with his run down the wing and kick to ANB in space. It was just a great option that was well executed - there were a squillion ways that play could have gone wrong.

He's a good mark for his size too.

No doubt he's foot soldier class, but I think his game is developing nicely. If he ends up having to make way as our injury list reduces, he'll be very stiff in my opinion.

He is rough around the edges but I think he is starting to iron out the majority of his poor choices that plagued him last year and early this year.

Still makes a few errors with his kicking, but the stuff he does well outweighs this.

I love his attack on the ball and man, and he is a very powerful player,

We have an incredibly powerful side with Viney, Petracca, Oliver, Harmes, Jones & Hunt all very strong players.

Agree. On all points. That was an excellent set up to ANB and he also made a great choice last week setting up a Garlett goal last week, when it would have been easy taking a less obvious (but less effective) option.

Which is great because i was worried that he was a hard working player who was a bit limited in terms of vision as previously he has taken the wrong option, most notably his choice to shoot for goal against Freo rather tan than cross to jetta, who was running through the cente corridor and who is suspect harmes did not see.

Harmes's biggest asset is he always puts in 110% and you have to love that (and i'm sure his coaches do).

Improve his kicking and he will be super valuable...

Like his hardness, running and endeavour..

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
