TODAY WE ARE ALL DEMONS by Whispering Jack

Thankfully, the footy is officially over and from now until the end of March, we don't have to concern ourselves with the distraction of the game itself but rather the more important aspects of our great national sport.

Things that come to mind are players ingesting drugs, be they recreational or performance enhancing, players getting into brawls, beating up their partners, the gender of their partners, smashing their cars and other property, getting speeding and parking tickets, and the really important stuff like the battles in and out of the courtrooms and what they wear when they get into them, drunken behaviour at the races, cricket and other public events, sacking boards, coaches and dud players, fixtures and draft concessions, trading players, free agency, drafting the next big thing, lousy commentators and incompetent journalists, funding for sports stadiums and their facilities, the importance in our game of lawyers, accountants and bean counters, being the moral arbiters of every aspect of societal behaviour, rule changes and their interpretation, indigenous players, beating the salary cap, whether beheading will take on in world sport, corporate governance, the COLA, international rules, the threat of soccer, Thursday or Sunday night games and abolishing Saturday afternoon games altogether, balance sheets and annual general meetings, spreading our game across the world, Foxtel's crummy summer programming, nasty rumours and much, much more.

The beauty of it all is that from today onward, everybody is equal as far as the AFL ladder is concerned. For the next six months there is no ladder, no wins, losses or percentage and those like us who support a downtrodden club can look their counterparts in the eye without any feeling of inferiority because next year we will conquer the world.

Today, we are all Demons!

Well said, but with one hell of a headache!

Hawk yesterday

But a dyed in the wool Red and Blue Demon for the next 365 days.

The best four months of the year awaits

Yes we have 6 months of hope and optimism. Hopefully not all dashed in Round 1 again. Go Dees

As Prodigal Son pointed out to me in a phone call the other day, the off-season is the best time of the year. As Melbourne supporters we get more off-season than most. We are truly blessed!

Is that all we have to look forward to for the next six months?

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

  • PREVIEW: Western Bulldogs

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

  • REPORT: West Coast

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.

The Demons return to town fresh off a thumping win over the back-to-back wooden spooners, the West Coast Eagles, played in front of a sparse crowd at Marvel Stadium, the same venue that hosted last week's heartbreaking loss.
