Thinking about the Dons probable intransigence with trading Ryder and other disenchanted players, our challenges in getting a fair price for Mitch Clark, it occurred to me that there may be increased value in our PSD pick 2, to pick up players. I.e. more players slipping through to this draft.

How does it work if we can't do a deal on MC, would he go into the PSD?

Similarly with the Dons, assuming their players can claim failure of duty of care and the Dons don't facilitate a deal, which draft would these players then fall into?

Can we trade our PSD pick?

The fact out of contract players can now enter the national draft has made the PSD almost redundant IMO. We tried to get Luke Ball to go through to the PSD after his trade fell through but he preferred to go into the ND where he was more likely to get where he wanted to go.

You can't trade PSD picks or Rookie draft picks (although you can trade rookie listed players)

I was under the impression that players could nominate for either the National or the Pre-Season Draft.

The PSD has become a little superfluous since they changed the rules on nominating a contract figure in the national draft. I think the PSD used to be the only place for established players to nominate if they wanted a contract over and above the minimums set out in the national draft. But players can now put a price on their head in the national draft (ie Luke Ball).

I don't think Clark can nominate for the draft and would have to go through the PSD.

It's also a way we can get other players if they are out of contract and their club wants to play hardball. It will be a good chip for us.

As others have said, I don't believe you can trade the PSD pick and that due to rule changes a few years back the PSD is now superfluous.

If a trade can't be done for MC he can nominate for the ND, PSD or both. Same with the Essendon players.

The PSD was losing its power when Luke Ball nominated for the National Draft to get to Coillingwood, and it was made more irrelevant with the introduction of Free Agency and Delisted Free Agency.

The only players now that would come through the PSD are out of contract players under 25 who have been instructed not to nominate for the National Draft (that would be code for players that don't have an agreement with a club to pick them up and are therefore can not be in high demand.

The PSD is the last roll of the dice for experienced NQR players to get on a Primary List before they opt for the salvage scrapheap of the antiquated 'Rookie' Draft.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
