8.9-magnitude quake hits off Indonesia

An Indonesian official says an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.9 has hit off Aceh, on the northern tip of Sumatra.

A tsunami warning has been issued by Indonesian and US monitors.

    Was on a beach in Phuket at that exact moment. New wife and I evacuated up a hill, waited for 3 hours with no phone, money, passports or anything. Bit of a panic but hopefully all ok now...

    Good that a warning system is working and that people are taking precautions. Better a few hours sitting on a hill than dying.

    But a large magnitude earthquake doesn't always mean a large tsunami. If the plate shift is along the ocean floor, nothing too much will happen. If it causes the ocean floor to thrust upwards, like it did in 2004, that's when there's trouble.
