Free Agency 2012

Here is a list, it isn't definitive but it's good enough.

2 things to remember: we don't know exactly who is being paid in the highest quartile, and Brent Moloney is up for Restricted FA not Unrestricted as the article implies when referencing Jamar and Moloney.

Who do we let go? We will get a draft pick whereas if they go into the draft we will not.

Who do we go after?

I say we try get Leigh Montagna he would be a great pick up for club

At this stage, we let go of no-one. Jamar is a prioirty to have signed as quickly and quietly as possible - will give us that extra spot on the Vet's list. Moloney, assuming he can build on his B&F year last year, is also a required player.

Who do we go after? I think a better question would be "who wants to play for Melbourne"? I still think we're a quality mid or two short, but we have to try and get one to come to us for a start - something we haven't had a great record of (I appreciate Clark came at the end of last year). The other thing is that I hope the current playing group realise that with Free Agency, it may make it easier for us t otarget certain types of players, so that may make them step up at the fear of being replaced.

While our club is underperforming, it will be hard to expect an upper echelon player to want to come to us. Maybe we look at the teams below, or who are on their way down. Bulldogs, Adelaide, Port, etc.

You would keep Dunn? Bate is also an UFA at the end of the year.

There's some 22 real games until the end of the season RP. We were offered a deal to have Bate taken off our hands at the end of last season, and we declined.

For us to benefit out of the Free Agency is not much different to trade week. We need a player that is wanted for us to benefit, I'm not sure if Dunn will be able to help us out with that view.

Then there is this...

http://www.theage.co...0222-1toc7.html

Should be hard and fast: If you have played 8 years at a club - you're a RFA, if you have played ten years - you're an UFA.

prob a dumb question, but what if you have been on the list for 8 years but played < 8 years AFL (same with 10 years on list, played < 10)

Yeah, I shouldn't have said 'played.'

It's as soon as you arrive at a club.

So does that mean you accept my response RP?

That post just says they should make the rules clearer.

As for earlier, I was just pointing out that if Bate or Dunn go nuts and have a blinder we have an issue and we might not be able to keep all our wanted FAs.

Moloney becomes a RFA at the end of the season, yet despite winning the B & F & appearing like the on field leader last year and this pre season, he gets rewarded by being demoted out of the leadership group. Good man management by Neeld & Co in the face of free agency? Wonder how he feels about the MFC's loyalty to him right now and how loyal to the Club he will be feeling come the end of the year when he's up for grabs, especially by some teams where he might walk straight into a leadership role. Sure leadership isn't everything but a vote of confidence from a new coach is, especially as based on this year's decision, you couldn't imagine him getting back into the leadership group at MFC for the rest of his career.

Don't derail this thread.

There is a Brent Moloney thread on The Locker Room board if you would like to defend Moloney from the acts of the FD.

Too late to trade any (no currency) except for Jamar (maybe Silvia if he has a resonable year) and he is going nowhere, a required player. Jamar is worth something on the trade table like Jolly was to Collingwood but he is worth too much to us. A trade is not about giving away under performing players but if you listen to supporters of all clubs you would think recruiters at other clubs are brainless individuals just waiting to give you the next Ablett for a couple of discards and anyway free agency is not about trade it is about the player wanting to move on, the club gets nothing in return.

To trade we have to have a player under contract who is worth something. Any ideas?

As for the players listed, apart from Jamar (hopefully signed in the early part of the season if not before) I would think all of them are playing for their contracts at Melbourne.

If you are having a thread about free agency and possible Demons targets, its pretty hard not to mention Moloney and that his treatment by the Club could put him at the top of the free agency list. Hardly derailing the thread.

Yes, but you touched on arguable sentiments about his demotion that could just take control of the thread.

It's best to keep that stuff on the dedicated Moloney thread.

It's hard to see Beamer wanting to leave the club. He clearly bleeds red and blue, and gave an impassioned speech about the club after winning the Bluey last year. Despite his demotion from the leadership group, he doesn't strike me as the kind of player that needs a label to "lead."

In terms of free agency, I think the guy we should be looking at is Mr. Deledio. He falls under the right age bracket at 24, (same as our other recruit big Mitch) and is that extra classy midfielder we need to make our midfield elite. All in all its a realistic possibility that we could nab him from tigerland with a big enough offer....

Whatever we can offer, they can match. And that is all that matters with RFA.

I will wager that not many top players will leave on RFA. Teams will just say to player managers 'we will match any offer, so don't ruin your blokes life by shopping him around.'

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
