Bring Back the Biff?

Featured Replies

It has been going on for decades (Northey almost cracked it-Danniher made it worse) i hope and pray our new coach uses players tactically rather than on sentiment. The team structure and procedure. If a player is injured or dropped, another comes in seamlessly. That must be the aim of a great team.

I'd love to have a side that played Big like the Cats, but mean & Rugged like the Hawks of old & Leigh's Lions.

Yes. Every single player put their body on the line regularly in all those sides you mention. The Hawks in the 70's and 80's just kept coming year after year.

.

Heres my favorite Pickett on Biglands.

Biglands lined him up but come off second best.

Laughed watching him explaining what happened to the trainers at 3:10.

Byron was amazing at only 178cm (5'10").

c.f. other shorties Davey (177) Maric (177) Jetta (180) Bennell (179)

my favourite biff moments are barry halls cheap shot on Staker and Josh Carr belting Ben Cousins in every Derby they played!

Thats a good point WYL. As to how the game used to be played, and wasn't it Great.

And heres some Info as to whats changed since, & has that influenced things.

Remember we had players who could still get a game back then that would struggle now with the 'athletes' and the rotations and hard chasing the length of the ground. Players like Lockett, Diesel, GAblett snr, Van der Haar, Conlan, Brereton, TD,

'My', it was Good Footy.

Key forwards close to extinction in SuperCoach

NEXT season could be the year key forwards become extinct in SuperCoach land.

The fact no key forwards could find a spot in the top 15 priced players for next season is a sign they are on shaky ground.

And the most expensive key forward, Hawk Lance Franklin, only barely fits the job description as he roams all over the field.

After Buddy, the next big forward on the list is Magpie Travis Cloke.

IMO the amount of rotations since the expansion of the Interchange bench since 1994 & again, since then, & now in conjunction with 'sports science',,, is causing the homogenization of our game & player styles out on the field. To the detriment of our great Indigenous game.

It is becoming too, 'utility'.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

It seems like only yesterday that these two sides faced off against each other in the centre of the continent. It was when Melbourne was experiencing a rare period of success with five wins from its previous six matches including victories over both of last year’s grand finalists.  Well, it wasn’t yesterday but it was early last month and it remains etched clearly in the memory. The Saints were going through a slump and the predicted outcome of their encounter at TIO Traeger Park was a virtual no-brainer. A Melbourne victory and another step closer to a possible rise into finals contention. Something that was unthinkable after opening the season with five straight defeats.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.
