Thanks E25. You don't dole out compliments wily nilly so I feel quite chuffed!

The cards seemed to fall my way on a couple of picks and I think by getting the bookends in early (Fev and Lake), as well as a couple of quality utilities (Goddard and Brennan), I had some flexibility later on in who I could pick up. They're all good sides though. Will be interesting to get some independent views.

It is all fun, etc...but I'm sure we can all be critical until the cows come home. For instance I don't rate your backline that much with Brennan back pocket, Jackson off half back,.....etc..there seems to be a few out of position from where they actually play.

Now let's dissect e25's (aka E25) team...with Paddy Ryder, Matthew Kreuzer and Mitch Clark all in the 18

Is that a bad thing?

All can ruck but are versatile enough to play in most places on the ground.

That's not a weakness.

B: Waters, Lake, Ibbotson

HB: Salopek, Goddard, Jackson

C: Davey, Bartel, Hannebery

HF: Knights, Gumbleton, Brennan

FF: Thomas, Fevola, Green

Foll: Jolly, Lewis, Murphy

So I rearranged your team to how I think they would line up. I don't like Brennan or Davey as defenders. Similarly Salopek plays more half back and Ibbotson plays deeper as well. No doubt you have a very talented list of players (Lake and Jolly firs class big men for example) but there is something I don't like about the team. I think Goddard is wasted as a CHB, I much prefer him with the freedom of being a midfielder, even if he starts off half forward. I think Knights and Gumbleton are too injury prone and wouldn't expect much from Gumby next year. Fev is surely past his best. Brennan and Lindsay Thomas are inconsistent. I can't bag Brad Green, he'd be good for 50 goals! Jackson is best suited as a tagger, Ibbotson may or may not make it as a decent player. Despite having Davey I think your midfield lacks line breakers. Lewis and Murphy haven't found the next level as footballers, and putting Hanners as a rover is a lot of pressure on him. You've selected extremely good players, but I don't think you've created an optimal team. Anyone else agree?

Tall timber. He'd have Kreuzer and Clark swapping. Ryder can play down back.

That re-arranged team of RR's was good the Master. Actually better and more balanced.

Yeah, true.

His is a tall backline.

I'm not opposed to using players in unfamiliar positions, if they are suited to it.

STRONG backline.

That's where it all starts IMO. Erred on that side but still happy with my forward set-up. Fev will be back in business without having to worry about big Browny blocking his space.

I don't recall Brennan starting in the back pocket. It's been mid or forward of centre. Half-back "maybe"

edit: The MAster's suggested line-up of RR is spot on I reckon.

It's getting hard keeping track of which team and which conversation.

Too much going on!

I think once all teams are finalized we might need to critique them one by one.

Personally, I'm looking for weaknesses as my aim to build a side which I perceived to have no weaknesses.

Relative weaknesses, that is.

Jobe Watson, Drew Petrie, Marc Murphy and Dale Thomas might seem a good midfield, but not up against Sandilands, Ablett, Hodge & Judd.

B: Ryder, Morris, Toy

HB: Gram, B. Reid, Hartlett

C: Palmer, Goodes, Van Berlo

HF: Sylvia, Kennedy, S. Johnson

F: Cunnington, Clark, Rioli

R: Kreuzer, Pendlebury, Martin

A tick for versatility in the ruck. I considered Clark, but in the end when naming an 18 decided not everyone was going for a second ruck so why me! I think your spine lacks power. Down the spine when my boy Buddy gets firing are Morris, Reid or Ryder good enough to stop him? Up forward Clark and Kennedy both need room to lead. Kreuzer is coming off an ACL and isn't a power ruckman either, although your ruck depth means you can work big boys over.

However, whatever power your spine lacks you make up for in the middle. But maybe your missing line breakers as well. With the rest of your smalls I'd say a weakness is that backline with the injury prone Gram and Hartlett and Toy on debut. Toy will be very good, but I'm happier with Swallow in a lesser role than Toy at BP against all stars.

Goodes and Stevie J were a bit off their best in 2010, can they rebound or are they slipping?

An interesting team, that I'd want to watch.

Seriously, I look at a team, go to make a comment, then I look back and I swear there are different players to what I remember!

I only remember my own...

It depends upon the midfield as a whole, not anyone individual IMO. Although Ablett is a biggy.

Yeah, I need to rearrange mine.

e25 does have Ryder in a back pocket.

Sorry, was playing NBA Jam...

Round 18

Pick 176 - Daniel Motlop - Port Adelaide

B:  S.Selwood D.Merrett C.Brown

HB B.Deledio M.Scarlett N.Malceski

C;  N.Dal Santo T.Boak C.Bateman

HF D.Motlop L.Hansen R.Petterd

F:  H.Ballantyne B.Hall C.Dawes

R: D.Hille C.Judd B.Vince

Happy with that.

A lot of pace, ball winners and users, 3 proven KPP's and a bit of x factor up front.

Players I really wanted but missed:

Waters - biggest mistake

Wanted Burgoyne for the wing

Sylvia or Green for HFF

But I got most of the team I pencilled in after rnd 5.

I like my half back line.

Posted

Interesting point of view...

Morris can stop Buddy as good as anyone not named Frawley.

Kreuzer's ACL is irrelevant in my eyes.

Soon-to-be best ruckman in the AFL.

Goodes breaks lines, Sylvia, Hartlett, Gram, Palmer... They all do.

Toy will be solid from the get-go and Hartlett and Gram's injuries don't concern me.

Goodes & Johnson were both near their best in the latter stages of the season.

Not an issue.

I think I have good variety and I'm not missing one type of player.

I can engineer my team to stop anyone.

Trengove's not online. This will be wrapped up tomorrow, with the voting soon after :)

My opinion would be hell yes! Let's see what the powers that be say.

What about a separate thread when the teams are completed, posting all final teams (ie by tomorrow night the last post of your team will be considered final), and then discussing them once at a time.
