The Chargers will be kicking themselves after their tardy start to the season and after not looking like making it for the best part of the season,  the Falcons get to 10 wins and earn a spot.  Atlanta could be the surprise packet.

And we have a winner in the tipping competition!

Congratulations to Clintosaurus  who wins the competition with a record score of 15 points - well done and well played.

Go the Biff (2nd place) stayed up near the pace all season but couldn't quite bridge the gap.  Former winner Dappa Dan rounds out 3rd place.

Final Tally

15 - Clintosaurus

12 - Go the Biff

10 - Dappa Dan

-------------------------------

7 - Macca

4 - JV7,  Gorgoroth

Well played to all though ... the comp is easy to run from my point of view and hopefully we'll get a few more joining in next season.  We can do another post-season tipping comp as well if we can get enough takers (more on that later)

To the victor go the spoils ...

Just imagine being a Ravens fan at the game - gut wrenching.

Well done to the Bills though ... 17 long seasons without playoffs and they finally make it!

I'm gonna sayyyy.... no. Don't want to imagine being a team that missed the playoffs while being expected to make it. Don't need to imagine, really.

Bills... so great when the outsider gets in.

Well done Falcons. Personally I can't see Eagles winning in two weeks, so whoever they play will be hungry.

Well done Clint on making the hall of fame. Much deserved. An absolute rout.

New post for the hats-off to Macca. Great fun as always. Look forward to the post season tipping comp. I assume it's just pick every game, most correct picks wins?

Traditionally it's been 1 point per winner with 3 points up for grabs for the Super Bowl but ...

I'm interested in making the NFC & AFC Championship games worth 2 points for each game just to spice things up and keep people interested.

What does everyone think?

We've also traditionally posted up our likely score outcomes but those scores are there for interests sake only.  @pantaloons started things off that way back in 2013 and we've all just followed suit.

Sweet.

I imagine the two point thing would be great if it keeps everyone picking. So why not?

That's the idea Dappa ... if one has a poor tipping result in week 1 or week 2 of the playoffs there's still a chance at winning overall with a strong finish.

Here are next week's games again - all times are AEDT ...

Sun 8.35am ...... Titans @ Chiefs

Sun 12.15pm .... Falcons @ Rams

Mon 5.00am ..... Bills @ Jaguars

Mon 8.40am ..... Panthers @ Saints

Work intervenes but the 2 College SF's could be good viewing ... I really only tune in at this stage of the College season but it would be good if they expanded the playoffs to 8 teams.

Close finishes are my ideal outcomes as I don't really have a dog in any of the fights.  Alabama just made it into the playoffs but the 2 SF's are played at neutral venues.

I struggle with the college games, the rule changes annoy me, seems its all O, no D.

Yeah ... it's free scoring alright.  The Americans can't get enough of it though.

My interest extends to the playoffs (only) like I often am with a few other sports (Rugby League,  the pointy end of a number of soccer cups,  Super Rugby,  NHL etc etc)

Noted NFL insider Adam Schefter is saying that Jon Gruden is set for the Oakland Raiders job.  A huge story if true.  Jack Del Rio has been fired to make way?

If it happens Gruden will end up coaching out of Las Vegas.

Chuck Pagano has been sacked as the Colts coach

Everyone has chased Gruden, the money he could get out of Vegas would be insane.

Not sure Raiders should be his go tho.

Browns have picks 1 and 4. Need to make them count this year.

They could draft a couple of busts again!  ... and I've yet to witness anyone ever being able to predict a bust (or at least being able to do so consistently)

The criticism of draft choices that go South nearly always comes after the event.

Yeah, and super quick to dismiss players who don't instantly perform.

Could Kizer make it with a decent offense around him? Would he be worse than Bortles?

Browns will go for a QB at 1, if they dont I think the fans will burn the stadium down.

Now to see if that college QB nominates for the draft or stays at school.

Yep,  agree with all that Gorg.

The Browns just have to keep going back to the well with fingers crossed ... the Sixers (NBA) and the Raiders have also both had horrendous luck with drafting but both franchises are now slowly starting to come good.

All that tanking and then they draft busts!  Drafting is often a cruel beast.

8 new teams make the playoffs ... which means that 20 different teams have made the playoffs in the last 2 seasons.  Quite amazing.

I'm not sure there's another sporting league in the world where the parity is as it is in the NFL.  Every team has 167 million to spend on player salaries which should mean that every team gets to have it's fair share of top-end talent.  Except for the Browns it seems

It's right up there with their crowning achievements I reckon. Their innovation is world best. Meanwhile Soccer is stuck, Baseball is a joke... AFL is improving, but still along way to go.

Good season of tipping and banter in here. Thanks @Macca for organising and I'll be in the post season version for sure.

Hopeful the Jags can get past Buffalo and Pittsburgh to the AFC Championship Game. Good luck to everyone else with teams in the playoffs.

  • CASEY: Collingwood

It was freezing cold at Mission Whitten Stadium where only the brave came out in the rain to watch a game that turned out to be as miserable as the weather.
The Casey Demons secured their third consecutive victory, earning the four premiership points and credit for defeating a highly regarded Collingwood side, but achieved little else. Apart perhaps from setting the scene for Monday’s big game at the MCG and the Ice Challenge that precedes it.
Neither team showcased significant skill in the bleak and greasy conditions, at a location that was far from either’s home territory. Even the field umpires forgot where they were and experienced a challenging evening, but no further comment is necessary.

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Having convincingly defeated last year’s premier and decisively outplayed the runner-up with 8.2 in the final quarter, nothing epitomized the Melbourne Football Club’s performance more than its 1.12 final half, particularly the eight consecutive behinds in the last term, against a struggling St Kilda team in the midst of a dismal losing streak. Just when stability and consistency were anticipated within the Demon ranks, they delivered a quintessential performance marked by instability and ill-conceived decisions, with the most striking aspect being their inaccuracy in kicking for goal, which suggested a lack of preparation (instead of sleeping in their hotel in Alice, were they having a night on the turps) rather than a well-rested team. Let’s face it - this kicking disease that makes them look like raw amateurs is becoming a millstone around the team’s neck.

  • CASEY: Sydney

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
