Matthew Bate on the Brisbane win

Really insightful piece from Matthew Bate on last weekend...

http://www.sportsnewsfirst.com.au/articles/2010/08/01/defence-paves-way-for-demons//

He's a smart young man and I think an important player but he really needs to work on his writing style.

If this is him attempting a life as a journo after his footy career he better hope there is a vacancy at the Hun because the only person that writes so unevenly is Mark Robinson.

Maybe Jon Anderson after a night out...

All he needs are a few bullet points - it reads like a list.

You'll find any footballer that writes an article will usually have someone that takes their basic bullet points and uses it to form a coherent article.

I think it is more an indication of the quality of the media outlet that published his article.

For instance, my in-law's father used to write a weekly column on behalf of a certain bald former Geelong CHF based on a 2 minute conversation on the phone.

An extreme case, but the majority of footballers would be similar to some degree.

Hence the Aker drama over the gay-footballers article.

The real issue would likely be that he couldn't be bothered properly checking an article he was going to put his name to, even though he was signing off on something he hadn't entirely written.

Yet compared to some of the posts on this forum, it's practically Shakespeare.

Good post, except that you wrote 'he's better than those noobs' instead of 'his better...'

Good to get some insight from the big man.

I find it amusing, for all the right reasons.

Id suggest writing an article on football is not as easy as it sounds.

Are you kidding me? Give me a thesaurus and a computer hooked up to footywire and I could be a Herald Sun footy "journo" too. One of the easiest jobs there is, IMO.

Yeah, nah.

You might not agree with what those blokes write or how they write it, but I'd be wary of dismissing it as "one of the easiest jobs there is". Believe it or not, there's some craft involved in professional journalism and it's a lot more involved than just sitting in front of a computer and spewing out the first thing you think of.

That privilege (!) is reserved for those who have done the hard yards.

Yeah, nah.

Of course I'm exaggerating a little, but the fact that there are so many past players in the footy media suggests that writing ability is not the number one criteria that is required when becoming a footy journo. Who your father is (i.e. Sam Lane and her father Tim) seems to have more importance than actually doing the hard yards at a lower level or in another field.

When you're referring to past players in the footy media, don't call them journalists, because they're not. They're generally commentators, columnists or presenters. Not journalists. Former Melbourne skipper Percy Beames was a journalist; so too is former Bulldog and Swan Neil Cordy. But there are precious few others I can think of.

As for Sam Lane, no doubt her dad's influence helped somewhat but she's managed to acquit herself pretty well in the actual journalist caper, regardless.

That's arguable, but as I said before, I'm certainly exaggerating when I talk of how "easy" it would be to become a footy journo.

Damn, that would've been perfect.

Sorry, would of been.

Hard to break those bad habits.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
