Watts wrong with Whats?

Featured Replies

And Gysberts is lapping it up after two games.

As a Melbourne Fan I hope I am proven wrong, but I don't see Watts becoming a dominant forward.

I'm sure he'd be stung by your opinion.

Jack has been very ordinary the last couple of weeks, not playing in front, falling over himself.

seems disinterested.

Give the boy time to develop. Let me tell you a little story of one Ronald Dale Barassi. In 1953 he was playing good footy in the 2nds and was promoted as full forward in our developing seniors team. He was an absolute flop as he flew for 'screamers' without getting near the ball. In fact, he found it so hard to get the pill he was dropped back to the seconds. Again, at full forward in the twos, he kicked a bag and was promptly reinstated to the firsts. Same story. Completely out of his depth or so it seemed. He was dropped back to twos where he played in a 'new' position of 'ruck rover'. He did very well and was given yet another chance.( Was it because his father was a famous Melbourne player we thought?) Boy, oh boy, did he take it!!!!! As a ruck rover in the firsts he was a sensation and never saw the twos ever again. This is a true story folks. I was there at the 'G' to witness the beginning of this great man's career. ( pleased to say I was only 14 at the time but I remember it vividly.)

Now, the playing styles of Jack and Ron are completely different but in my humble opinion, true, natural ability will eventually shine through. Maybe Jack does need more time at Casey but I have a lot of faith after watching him play against Port up there in Darwin. Let us help him by not coming down on him like a ton of bricks when he has a quiet day.

You are correct Bobby I am only a little younger than you but remember it well.

That is exactly why Jack should be back at Casey this weekend.

He needs a confidence lift playing at a lower level.

Sure it was 1955 for Barass misjudging those marks? Given Charlie Sutton last week said his favorite moment of the 1954 GF was having RDB run into his elbow, I think Ron may have arrived by then.

Anyway, one G Lyon on Footy Classified made the interesting admission last night that in his very early days he had precisely the same problem as Watts, in keeping his feet.

Lyon said there was an issue of growing into his body and building up leg strength. Neither he nor Grant Thomas had any doubt Watts will make it.

Yes "pitmaster" I saw the same program however I think Grant Thomas once said "you don't need ruckman they are over rated"

So I don't take too much notice of him.

I hope Gary mean't it. if Jack turns out to be as good as Gary I will be very happy.

Good spotting Pitmaster. It must have been 1953 when Barass had his teething problems as that was his first year at Melbourne. He was an established star by 1955.

Thanks for that Bobby, never knew that.

Wouldn't be asking what is wrong with Watts, I'd be asking who the #$%% is our forward coach. Our forward line is by far the worst drilled in the league. Is a little hard to expect Watts to develop if we have nobody that knows how to develop key position forwards.

I agree. Our forward line has sucked for a while now. Look at a lot of other teams who take clean marks in the forward 50 andhave space. When i watch our games it always seems crowded. I like the idea how they try and play on quick and all but a lot of the tom its just bombed into the forward line. Green has been good for us up forward though.

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.
