Great article and totally agree. We paid the price for being successful just before the advent of TV. We don't even have the TV replay of our last grand final. There is a copy of every grand final telecast since 1963 except ours. How many times have they shown St Kilda's 66 GF win? All we have is a grainy movietone newsreel with a tony charlton voiceover.

Richmond has their period in the '60s and '70s and Francis Bourke. Carlton followed with Bruce Doull. Don Williams was a star too and should get recognised for his efforts.

I like the other names mentioned too, Mcmahon and Spencer and the rest, but there is one glaring omission. Where's Bernie Massey? No 37 and full back in the '64 premiership side. Bernie - come on down!

Yes i wonder what happened to the 64 VideoTape of the game. Tape was very expensive in those days so i am guessing it was recycled into the system.

Dam shame it would be great to watch the whole game, We must never forget our Champions from that 10 year period. B)

Nothing wrong with Massey but the one name they missed was Frank Adams (6 Flags)

Has always been one of my great frustrations since the hall of fame was started

Mark Bickley was the most embarrising selection they have ever made considering the players who are OBVIOUSLY ahead of him

You only have to look at each team of the century to see what i mean

The biggest blunder they made was the selection of VFL/AFL team of the century by putting Silvagni ahead of Jack Regan

Having no Collinwood player in that team is a joke (Regan)

You're kidding! Is that right? No Collingwood player in the Team of the Century??

That's positively GOLD if true...!!

Love it!!

And, back on subject, yes, let's get those deserving Melb names into the Hall of Fame, where they belong!

Go Dees!!

Swampfox is on the mark as far as Bickley is concerned....no doubt that entry was to appease the interstate groups IMO.

I am 35 so missed out on this glorious period and would have loved to live through it......(even though we will see this period of domination again very soon!) and what has always been a source of frustration for me growing up is how often these great players were overlooked when speaking of great teams/players of the past.....of course they were always mentioned but glossed over far too easily.

Mithen, Spencer, Williams, Massey, Adams..Big Bob....superstars of the game that deserve recognition.

If anyone listened to 3AW on Saturday Mike Sheahan interviewed Cam Schwab about this topic (Dennis Commetti was there also and as usual was all for his favourite player of all time - Bob Johnson!)...it was a great interview and interesting to hear that some of these players (Spencer for one) left to go back to the country because the $ were better than at VFL level.....some only played 130-150 games and were off to the bush. I think this is where they are overlooked because they didnt play 250-300 games which is just plain wrong. Coleman never played 100 and is in there and so should many of the above. Stu Spencer was only presented with his B&F Trophy at a function two weeks ago!! Hopefully a good start by Cam and the Board in ensuring former players are respected as they should be for representing this great club.

We should always Honour and revere all our past players. They are a very important lifeblood to the club.

I am very glad that guys like Darren Cuthbertson presented Jumpers earlier this year as an example. All past players should be in reguliar contact with the MFC.

.............

The greatest omission from the Sheahan's list in my mind is the late Ian 'Tiger' Ridley. Our #1 rover during the 'glory days'(courage personified and the ultimate team man), coach for three years (admittedly during leaner times)and went on to serve as Club Chairman. An outstanding contributor to the Melbourne Football Club both on and off the field. I hope his overall contribution wouldnt be marked too harshly by the events of 1996.

Anyone that cant let that go is not a fair dinkum supporter....it was a horrible time but Tiger had our interests at heart no matter right or wrong and did everything at and for this club...no question!
